Lois Lane had a secret. One she couldn’t tell anyone, not even her fiancé. Three months ago when Darkseid had attacked Metropolis and the Justice League, Clark had not only discovered a new power, but had been forced to erase the memory of his secret from everyone not directly related to the Justice League, but apparently something had gone very wrong.
She sat in the bullpen of the Daily Planet watching her fiancé type up a report from across the room and she couldn’t help but wonder why she hadn’t forgotten when it was obvious Clark thought she had. Every once in a while she would see him sending her a look of guilt and it was times like those she wanted to jump out of her seat and tell him he had no reason to feel guilty because she knew everything.
But she never did. Oliver and Chloe skirted around the subject and made excuses for him whenever they visited from Star City and Lois dutifully acted clueless while secretly feeling both elated and frustrated that she had this knowledge that she couldn’t tell anyone about.
Every day that she watched him, she realized how silly her disguise for him had been even though everyone seemed to fall for it. The truth was hiding in his eyes and it was hanging on her tongue, but she was afraid if she told him she knew, that whatever kind of mind warp he had attempted to use didn’t work, then he’d try all over again and that was something she couldn’t let happen.
Lois didn’t know why Clark had tried to wipe her memory, but she knew him well enough to know that it was most likely some kind of misguided attempt at protecting her and so she’d go with it for a little while and let him think that she was slowly putting the pieces together.
He thought she couldn’t see the kind of man that he was, but she’d prove him wrong. Clark glanced up from his computer screen; his eyes meeting Lois’s and he pushed his glasses up on the bridge of his nose and smiled at her. She returned it, but the look in her eyes startled him slightly.
There was a spark of recognition in them that made his chest tighten. Was it possible? Could she know? He watched her blink and then the look was gone as she winked at him and went back to whatever she was doing at her desk causing him to let out a long breath.
Taking away her memories had been harder than taking Tess’s. Being honest with Lois, her knowing who he really was and loving all of him, meant the world to him, but it had been exposed that she knew the blurs identity when Darkseid attacked and Lex came out of hiding and too many of his enemies had come after her.
So he did the only thing he knew how to, he wiped any existing memories of his alter ego from her and came forth to the world as Superman. It was hard and not having Lois to support him was difficult, but he was getting through it and he knew Lois better than anyone.
Eventually she’d figure it out and when she did, this time they’d be more careful. With her being engaged to mild mannered reporter Clark Kent, no one would ever suspect her connection to Superman. Until then, he’d wait knowing someday soon Lois would once again share his secret.
