Epilogue
Two Days Later
(Chloe POV)
What is that loud beeping noise…I groaned as I moved my head to the side. I winced and opened my eyes slowly. Ugh it’s bright. When my eyes adjusted to the lights I saw Clark slumped back in a hospital chair too small for his large frame.
I saw his chest rise and fall and I smiled. I glanced up when I heard the door open. I watched as Lana and Lex walked in laughing. I smiled. It took a few seconds before they noticed I was awake. Lana’s eyes widened and she quickly came over.
“Chloe, oh my god…thank god you’re okay. We were so worried.”
I chuckled lightly then winced. I scooted my body up into a half sitting position even though it was protesting.
“Is Evan okay? Where is he?”
Lex nodded and sat on the other side of me. His voice came out in a soothing tone.
“Calm down Chloe, Evan is fine. Don’t work yourself up.”
I nodded and gazed back at Clark. I spoke to them in a low voice.
“How long has he been here?”
Lana patted my hand and gave me a silly smile.
“He hasn’t left. Speaking of that we should probably wake him up. He’ll be furious that we didn’t tell him the minute you woke up.”
I watched her move over to Clark and Lex smirked in my direction.
“He’s been waiting for you to wake up for two days. He really cares about you, you know.”
I smiled as he turned back to look at Lana. I placed my hand over his to get his attention and he turned back to me.
“Thank you Lex…for all your help with Evan.”
He nodded.
“My pleasure.”
The next time I glanced away from Lex my eyes landed on Clark. Our eyes met and I had to look away from the intense look I found there. He stood up and cleared his throat.
“Maybe you guys can go find my parents and tell them to bring Evan in here so he can see Chloe.”
I saw Lana roll her eyes good naturedly as Lex grinned. She was about to say something when Lex took a hold of her shoulders and led her out of the room.
“We’ll be back in a little bit.”
Clark nodded and closed the door behind them. He came back over and sat on the chair next to my bed. He opened his mouth and then closed it. He did it two more times before I laughed. He raised an eyebrow at my outburst.
My voice came out a little hoarse. Clark reach over and got me some water. I took a few large gulps and then cleared my throat. When he still didn’t say anything I smiled.
“Okay since you seem to be having trouble getting the conversation started let me. Apparently I’ve been in here for two days…”
He nodded.
“Yeah, it’s been a long two days. Chloe…I’m so sorry…”
I watched him put his head down and I frowned. I reached out and ran my fingers through his hair. He lifted his head and rested it on his hands.
“Clark…what could you possibly be sorry for?”
He gave me a incredulous look.
“Chloe you’re in the hospital. You have three broken ribs, a gash on your forehead…bruises…”
His voice trailed off and I gave him a warm smile. My voice was amused when I spoke.
“All of which is not your fault. I’m pretty sure we can thank Lee for all the damage.”
I frowned.
“I don’t really remember much…can you fill in the blanks?”
“After Lee shocked you they let Lex in and he showed them that he had the drugs. Well while Lex was outside he was able to switch out the case and he handed them the one you and Lana put together with the explosives.”
He smiled.
“Good idea by the way and I don’t even want to know where you got those explosives. So we got Evan back, but we all had to get out of the house before he opened it.”
He looked up and met my eyes. There was a look on his face that wasn’t often directed at me.
“We almost didn’t make it. If I had been anyone else…we most likely wouldn’t have.”
I nodded. Ah…it makes sense now. We almost died and Clark thought he almost lost his best friend…too bad that’s all I am…I took his hand in mine and gave him a friendly smile.
“Well it all worked out. I’m right here Clark…we’re all safe and we got Evan back.”
He sighed and leaned back in his chair.
“I wanted to talk to you about something.”
“Shoot.”
I watched him fidget for a little bit before he spoke.
“Ever since we found Evan…something’s been different between us Chloe.”
I nodded.
“I know.”
His head snapped up and he looked startled that I agreed with him. I grinned.
“Didn’t think I’d admit it?”
He gave me a sheepish look and shrugged.
“I guess. I care about you Chlo…more than you realize.”
My heart sped up and I tilted my head to the side and waited for him to continue. His voice came out low when he finally spoke.
“I like you Chloe…”
A bright smile broke out on my face. My voice was just as light when I spoke.
“I like you too Clark.”
He grinned. His voice was more confident the next time he spoke.
“I was thinking, if you were feeling up to it would you like to go to prom with me?”
I felt my heart melt. The prom…Clark wants to go to the prom with me…is it crazy that, that makes me feel all girly?
“I’d love to Clark.”
We were grinning at each other like idiots when the door opened and Mr. and Mrs. Kent followed by Lana and Lex walked in. I heard a squeal and smiled.
“Maaaa maa”
I reached out my arms and Mrs. Kent handed him to me. I winced and Clark frowned.
“Chlo maybe you shouldn’t be holding him.”
“Pfft, I’d like to see you get him away from me.”
Everyone in the room chuckled. Mr. and Mrs. Kent caught us up on how the remodeling for the farm house was coming along, Lex told us they had Lee and the twins back in custody and they wouldn’t be leaving Belle Reve any time soon. Lana chose that moment to tell us she had our homework for us.
The room was silent and everyone was watching me play with Evan. I looked around the room and raised an eyebrow.
“What? Why is everyone looking at me?”
I saw Clark look at his mom and then back at me. She sighed and I got a bad feeling.
“Chloe, sweetheart. Child services found a home for Evan. They are going to come pick him up today.”
What…but that’s so soon…I wouldn’t even have any time with him…I tried not to let the hurt show, but Clark could see it. He took my hand and spoke in a soft voice.
“I have some good news though…or rather Lex does.”
He nodded toward Lex and he smiled.
“I spoke with child services and the family taking in Evan works for me. They are going to hold Evan temporarily until you and Clark are fit to take care of him yourselves…if that’s something you’d like to do.”
My eyes widened. When I spoke my voice was filled with awe.
“Really?”
Clark and Lex nodded.
“You and Clark will be allowed visitation until you have a stable home set up for Evan. It’s going to require a lot of work and it’s not a decision to be taken on lightly. It’s a life long commitment so just make sure you’re ready, because you only get one chance.”
My face turned serious and I nodded.
“We’ll make sure. Right Clark.”
“Absolutely.”
Mr. and Mrs. Kent cut in.
“There are still a lot of things for the two of you to do and experience first though. It’s a decision that we should all discuss together.”
Clark and I agreed. Not long after that Mr. and Mrs. Kent left, and Lana dragged Lex out for lunch; leaving Evan, Clark and I alone. I patted the bed next to me and Clark gave me a half smile before gently sitting down next to me.
“So…taking care of Evan…it’s a big responsibility. Think we can handle it?”
He shrugged.
“I think we will be able to…someday, but not now.”
I gave him a sad smile.
“You’re right…I know you are…I just didn’t think it would be this hard. I’m really going to miss him.”
“Me too, but we’ll be able to visit as much as we want.”
“True.”
I watched as Evan played with the sheets and giggled as Clark and I sat with him. As I watched Evan play and I thought about the last week or so I couldn’t help think that Evan brought Clark and I together and the thought made me smile.
I watched Clark making faces at Evan and I chuckled.
“Hey Clark…”
“Yeah Chlo?”
“I’m really glad we found Evan.”
He grinned and as he looked at me I felt myself move an slightly closer to him. His eyes met mine and he leaned in. When our lips finally touched my eyes fluttered shut, his hand brushed my cheek and I moaned softly.
When we broke apart my eyes opened and he was looking at me with a soft smile.
“So am I.”
Evan took that moment to throw a toy at Clark and I, which made us laugh. We stayed there for what felt like hours talking and playing with Evan. It’s weird…Clark and I have been friends for years and I think there has always been something more there, but it took finding Evan to bring those feelings to light.
It’s amazing how one event in life can alter the course of things…change your direction…if Clark and I hadn’t found Evan would we have realized how we felt about each other or would we have spent the next three years pretending to be only friends?
Thank god I’ll never know…I have my guy and I couldn’t be happier…
