Chapter 1
Gotham City
(Victoria POV)
I sighed in frustration as I made my way down the street. Damn people. I can’t believe someone slit the tires on my car…I swear…and to think I thought Metropolis was bad. A year and a half…that’s how long I’ve lived in Gotham City and sometimes I can honestly say with a confident amount of certainty that I miss Metropolis. At least when I was there, no one slit my tires…I shivered, pulled my jacket tighter around me, and crossed the street as a cool breeze blew past. The street was practically empty and I could hear the clacking of my heels against the pavement.
I felt a light vibration in my pocket and I glanced down briefly while pulling my cell phone out to answer it.
“Hello.”
“Hey you…”
I grinned. It must be around 6:30ish…he always called around the same time everyday. It was usually when he left the Planet.
“Hey, what’s up?”
“Not much just got out of work…heading to the truck. Thought I’d give you a call, see how your day was.”
I chuckled lightly as I continued walking.
“Who are you kidding Kent? You do realize that you call me everyday at the same time right?”
I heard his deep chuckle on the other end of the phone and it caused a pang in my heart. I really miss him…sometimes being away from the people I care about is harder then it looks…It’s times like this when my day has pretty much sucked that I think about just showing up in Metropolis on his doorstep…
Unfortunately, I probably wouldn’t last long enough to make it to his place, as soon as I’d set foot in the city, I’d be a goner…I sighed again and his voice brought me out of my thoughts.
“Hey, you there?”
“Yeah, I’m here.”
I could almost hear the frown in his voice as he spoke.
“What’s wrong? Is everything okay? Do you…”
I cut him off when I spoke.
“Everything is fine. You worry too much. I’m just having a crappy day that’s all.”
“What happened?”
I heard a noise and stopped in my tracks. I turned slightly and glanced over my shoulder. Nothing was there. I looked up the street, to the side and then back. Get a grip…you really need to chill with the overactive imagination…
“Chlo…”
I shook my head.
“Sorry, I thought I heard a noise, but I’m just loosing my mind.”
He laughed and continued talking.
“So tell me what happened.”
“I got into a slight disagreement with my editor this morning; I spent all day running around putting together a story about Batman, and then when I go to leave work I find someone was nice enough to slash my tires.”
I could hear concern in his voice as he spoke.
“Where are you now? I hope you’re not stubborn enough to be walking home alone in Gotham at night. Do you need me to come give you a lift home? It would only take me a couple seconds to get there.”
I smiled.
“I’m walking home. Don’t worry I’m only a few blocks away, there’s nothing to worry about and no, it’s fine. I don’t need an escort home. I’m a big girl. Besides you can’t keep coming out here all the time. Lois is already suspicious about how you get around so quickly. We don’t need her looking into it any more than she already does.”
The line was silent and then I heard him let out a deep sigh.
“I know…I just…you’re my best friend…and I miss you. I hate the fact that things are so dangerous and I can’t be there to protect you.”
My voice was soft, but firm when I spoke.
“Listen…we all agreed that this was the best way to keep me safe remember? You and Oliver practically forced me into exile over here in good old Gotham City…and what…now you want me to come home? You know it doesn’t work that way…we agreed to this plan…let’s just stick to it. If you guys do your job right, I’ll hopefully be able to come home soon.”
“Yeah, yeah…I know. We’re trying…it’s been hard. You know how Lex is…I think we’re getting closer though…crap…”
I frowned.
“What’s wrong?”
“Lois is heading in my direction…she looks mad…”
I chuckled.
“And on that note…I’ll see you this weekend. Oliver is flying me into Star City for a mission.”
“At least now I have something to look forward to.”
“There you go…I’ll talk to you later.”
“Bye.”
I swallowed hard.
“Bye Clark…”
I snapped the phone shut and put it back in my pocket. I tightened my hand on my bag and quickened my pace. They’re getting closer…I wonder what his definition of closer meant…The last time Lex tried to take me he got extremely close. Way too close for comfort. It was actually dumb luck that Clark had interrupted the kidnapping.
Thinking about it sent a shiver up my spine and not in a good way. Until Clark, Oliver and the rest of the Justice League figure out what Lex is up to and stop him, I’m stuck in Gotham City…I suppose things could be worse…A loud crash startled me out of my thoughts…maybe things had just gotten worse.
I turned and noticed someone standing against a brick wall between two empty store fronts. I swallowed hard. Wonderful…this was just a perfect ending to a terrific day. I averted my eyes and continued walking. I could hear footsteps behind me.
“Hey Blondie…where ya goin?”
I ignored him and kept moving forward. I turned the corner and ran dead into a hard chest.
“Ohph…”
I felt two hands steady my body. I looked up into dark leering eyes. I jerked my body away from him and took a few steps back. I held my head high, took a deep breath, and spoke with determination in my voice.
“Let me pass.”
“Hey Bobby…looks like we got a feisty one here…what’s your name sweetheart?”
He grabbed my arm and I lashed out. I twisted my arm slightly, forcing him to move closer to me in order to keep his grip on my arm. I pushed my knee up and caught him in the midsection. He dropped my arm, doubled over, grabbed his stomach, and shouted.
“Shit…you’re gonna get it bitch!”
I didn’t waste any time. I ran around him and took off down the street. Oliver and Victor had taught me a bit of self-defense and I was as good as anyone, but I wasn’t stupid. Those two guys were not only tall, but they each had at least a hundred pounds on me…
I tried to reach into my pocket as I ran down the street; my heels echoing on the pavement bellow me. I was breathing heavy as I glanced back. Only one of them was following me…and he was catching up. Shit…shit…shit…why didn’t I just let Clark walk me home?
I turned another corner, not even paying attention to where I was going, and someone grabbed me from behind. I grunted as my fingers closed around my phone. I yanked it out and right as I opened it, I felt the arms around my waist turn me around and slam me against a brick wall in the ally I ended up in.
Good job…you walked into a trap…some reporter you are…I chastised myself as I fought to get him off me. He slapped the phone out of my hand and I watched as it hit the ground and broke into several pieces.
Ugh…I liked that phone…He took a knife out and pressed it against my neck. My body froze…How is it that I always wined up getting myself into messes like this?
“What’s the matter bitch? Don’t got nothing to say now do ya?”
He gave me a cold smirk and yelled over his shoulder.
“Yo, Jay…I got the bitch…”
The other guy jogged down the ally, came up to us, and slapped me hard across the face. My head flung to the side and I winced. I opened my mouth slowly a few times to try and get rid of the sting. It only made it worse.
I felt the knife dig in deeper and I bit my lip. His face came in close to mine and I could smell his foul breath. His voice was low and menacing.
“Scream for me bitch…”
I clenched my jaw, glared at him, and spoke in a hard voice.
“I don’t scream for scum. If you do anything…and I mean anything to me…trust me…you’ll regret it…”
They let out a couple of laughs before I felt the two of them move closer. I turned my head to the side as I felt one of them grab my thigh as the other slid the knife down my cheek and across my top. Screw this…it doesn’t make sense to stay in hiding if I’m going to die anyway…
I opened my mouth and was about to scream for Clark when I felt both men slam into me and then the force was gone. Suddenly I felt myself loosing my balance and before I could catch myself, I hit the ground.
I moved slowly to recompose myself and as I glanced around, I noticed everything had gotten dark. In an effort to try to make out things around me, I tried squinting my eyes.
My eyes widened at the scene before me. Standing there less than ten feet in front of me, cape swirling as he kicked and fought off my attackers, was Batman…He moved smoothly as he disarmed them. It seemed like I was sitting there forever watching him.
I was startled out of my thoughts by a deep, raspy, voice.
“Are you alright?”
I glanced up and there he stood, hand stretched out in my direction. I hesitated for a second before taking it and letting him pull me to my feet. I glanced down and sighed as I shook my head.
“Dammit…I really liked this outfit.”
I brushed myself off and looked back up at him. I tilted my head to the side and looked at the two thugs tied up. I pointed.
“Thanks for that, normally I don’t usually run away like such a girl…but I figured two of them…one of me…probably not a good idea to push my luck.”
He stared at me for a couple of seconds in silence before speaking in a detached voice.
“You shouldn’t be walking around this late alone Miss Vale. Next time you might not be so lucky.”
I raised an eyebrow and placed my hands on my hips.
“You see, now that’s just not fair. You know my name, but technically I don’t know yours.”
I saw his lips curve in a smirk.
“My name isn’t important…”
“I see…alright…Batman…no name then. How about an interview?”
He started to walk away. I followed him out of the ally and called out to him.
“Wait!”
He stopped, but didn’t turn around.
“Thank you…for saving me…”
He turned around and gave me an odd look. I watched as he circled me.
“You’re not afraid of me.”
It was a statement, not a question, and I frowned.
“Why would I be afraid of you?”
“Most of the people in Gotham City fear what they don’t understand…and after everything that has transpired with Miss Dawes and Mr. Dent…”
I watched him for a minute before taking a deep breath and speaking in a strong voice.
“I’m not most people and I don’t believe what they say about you. I don’t think that someone who protects Gotham City…would murder in cold blood.”
I heard a deep sardonic laugh come from him.
“Is that what you think I do Miss Vale? Protect Gotham City? Is that why you write all those articles about me?”
I nodded and a small smirk slid onto my face.
“Yes…I do and as far as the articles go…”
I paused and shrugged before continuing.
“I only write the truth…so you read my work often?”
“It’s unusual to see positive things written about me in the Gazette. I was…intrigued you could say.”
My grin widened.
“Well I hope to be able to keep that up.”
I hesitated before speaking cautiously.
“Listen…this might sound odd…but I have these friends who I think you’d fit in perfectly with…”
He shook his head.
“I think it’s about time you head home Miss Vale.”
I closed my mouth and nodded. Fine…he didn’t want to discuss it…that’s okay…I’d work on it though…
“You’re right.”
I fumbled around in my pocket and pulled out my card. I held it out to him. He glanced at it and when I didn’t pull my hand back, he took it. I spoke in a calm voice as I made eye contact with him.
“You’re not the only good guy out there. There are lots of us who want to take scum like those guys off the street…and there are many ways to do that. If you change your mind…or if you here of any stories…you have my number.”
I started to walk away and I heard his voice behind me.
“Get home safely Miss Vale…”
I smiled and spoke without turning around.
“I’m sure you’ll make sure I do. Goodnight…Batman…”
I continued walking up the street, this time slowly and more relaxed. I’d have to pick up a new phone tomorrow…but all in all I’d say my night was definitely looking up…
