She sat on the couch, a cup of tea in her hands, and stared at the Christmas tree as the light voices of a choir caroling wafted through the radio speakers. Buffy lifted the small cup to her lips, took a sip, and sighed as she brought it back down. It was Christmas Eve and she was alone.

Xander was with Ana, doing whatever it was engaged people did, Giles was in England, she had no clue where Willow was and to be honest after everything that happened with Dawn and the car accident she didn’t really care, and Dawn had been invited to a party at a friend’s house, which is where she currently was.

Buffy had always loved the holidays when she was growing up, especially Christmas, but recently there weren’t many things she loved. Hell, there weren’t many things she liked. Ever since Willow had brought her back from the dead things had been different.

She was unhappy and being alone on the holidays didn’t help. Buffy stood and walked over to the window. As she looked out onto the street she could see the other houses lit up with decorations. She wrapped her arms around herself and swallowed hard.

There was a slight rapping at the door and Buffy frowned as she turned in the direction of the door. She wasn’t expecting anyone and if it was one of her friends they would have just come in. She moved away from the window and sat back on the couch with her feet curled beneath her.

The knocking stopped a minute or so later and Buffy leaned her head against the couch and closed her eyes.

“What’s the matter love, feet not working?”

Buffy opened her eyes not nearly as surprised as she should have been by the bleach blonde head smirking in her direction. She rolled her eyes.

“Spike, why are you here?”

He tilted his head and noted that there was no irritation in her voice when she spoke, which when addressing him was odd. He frowned.

“Something on your mind love?”

She raised an eyebrow.

“Haven’t I told you not to call me that?”

Spike smirked.

“When did I start listening to you?”

Buffy opened her mouth to say something, but decided against it as she shook her head and turned away from him. Spike’s frown deepened. When did Buffy ever miss a chance to one up him on anything? The answer to that would be never. Something was wrong with his slayer and he couldn’t have that.

Spike glanced around the house and noticed how quiet it was. He lifted his trench coat slightly and perched on the arm of the couch. He cleared his throat, but Buffy kept looking out the window.

“Where’s the nibblet?”

“Christmas party.”

He nodded and they continued to sit in silence. He glanced at her out of the corner or his eye before pursing his lips together.

“Aren’t you going to kick me out?”

Spike saw Buffy’s lip twitch at the corner and he grinned to himself. She shifted and raised an eyebrow at him.

“Did you come all the way here so I’d throw you out?”

Spike made a face and ‘pffted’

“Bullocks…I came here because I’m out of hot chocolate.”

Buffy did a double take and confusion settled on her face.

“What?”

“I’m out of hot chocolate.”

Her brow creased as she turned her body fully towards him.

“You’re out of hot chocolate?”

“S’what I said. It’s my Christmas Eve tradition…even vampire have traditions you know…so I came here…figured you and the nibblet would have some.”

Buffy stared at him for a few seconds trying to figure out if he was being serious. When he didn’t move or say anything else she shrugged.

“Yeah…I have hot chocolate.”

“Any those tiny marshmallows?”

Buffy smirked slightly.

“It’s possible.”

Spike stood up quickly and gestured to the kitchen.

“Why are we still in here then?”

Buffy hesitated for a second before getting up and following Spike into the kitchen. He rummaged through her cupboard as she grabbed the milk out of the fridge and went about measuring out two cups and pouring them into a pot on the stove.

He watched her move about the kitchen with ease and his heart ached for her. He had no idea what it was like being pulled from heaven, but he knew she wasn’t happy here and that’s why she was more than a little mean to him sometimes.

Spike was pretty sure he was in love with Buffy, and even though she had been avoiding him like the plague since their little shag against the wall, he was pretty sure she cared about him too. He hated that she was spending the holiday alone.

Where we her so called friends? Too busy to be there for her…he didn’t really believe in Christmas and all that, but he knew his slayer liked it and if being here so she wasn’t alone made her feel better he’d do it, even if she cursed him for it in the morning.

He watched as she shut off the pot, moved toward the cups, and poured the milk in. She mixed it together and walked toward him. He plopped down on one of the seats and shook the extra packet of marshmallows. Buffy chuckled and shook her head before sliding him his cup and sitting down next to him.

“You know Spike…sometimes you’re not half bad.”

He gave her a genuine smile.

“Only sometimes love?”

She gave him a mock glare.

“Don’t push your luck.”

Spike turned towards his hot chocolate and grinned as he took a sip.

“I hear they’re playing A Christmas Story tonight too love…”

“And…”

“Well…my telly broke…and it’s a Christmas tradition…”

Buffy hid the smile that was threatening to form on her face as she turned to him.

“One movie…”

He nodded.

“Right...’course…”

“Mmm”

“Have I told you about my other Christmas traditions?”

She stood up and shook her head as he followed her into the living room. Spike chattered away as they made themselves comfortable on the couch, turned on the TV and got everything situated. Buffy listened as he went on and on about movies and trees and even Christmas sex…

So not gonna happen, but as she sat there on the couch drinking hot chocolate with Spike she felt her dark mood fade and become light. His presence made her feel better. She knew what he was doing, that he was staying because he knew she was lonely.

But right now she didn’t care. All she cared about was the fact that right now…she didn’t hate this…hell she might even like it…she’d worry about everything another day because for once she was finally content…dare she even say happy…
