Chloe’s fingers flew against the keyboard in record time as she tried to get the last of the data together before she headed to Oliver’s for his annual Christmas party. She glanced at the clock on the side of her screen and sighed. She was going to be late.

Right as she was saving the document her cell phone blared loudly from the other end of her workstation. The instrumental sounds of Jingle Bells echoed through the empty base of operations. She shuffled over, flipped open the phone, and glanced back at the computer.

“Hello.”

“Where are you Sidekick?”

Chloe rolled her eyes. She really wished Oliver would stop calling her that. She knew it was an affectionate nickname, but she was basically running the Justice League now, and she hoped that the guys saw her as their equal.

“I’m finishing up this data entry.”

She could almost hear the disapproval in his voice over the phone and knew he was going to start in on another lecture.

“Chloe…it’s Christmas Eve. If we can take the night of for some much needed R&R then so can you. I swear you work harder than all of us…besides Clark is being a downer…and lately you’ve been the only one who can snap him out of his funk. He’s ruining my party.”

Chloe chuckled lightly, but the smile didn’t reach her eyes. Clark had been acting particularly strange ever since he and Lois called off their almost romance and the only thing either of them would say about it was ‘it just didn’t work, we’re better off as friends,’ almost like it had been rehearsed.

Chloe closed out of the window and started the process of shutting down her equipment.

“I’m shutting down the mainframe now. I should be there in about fifteen minutes.”

“Sounds good.”

There was a loud crash on the other end of the phone and Oliver swore under his breath.

“I have to go kill Bart…I’ll see you when you get here.”

Chloe smiled.

“Bye Ollie.”

She closed the phone, went over by the door, put on her jacket, and grabbed her purse before giving the ‘Watchtower’ one more glance over making sure everything was where it should be. Not five minutes later she was walking out the door and into the cold Metropolis night.

It took Chloe exactly twenty minutes to get to Oliver’s penthouse. When she pulled up in front of the building Maurice, the doorman to Oliver’s building came outside and opened the door for her with a smile.

“Good evening’ Chloe, how are you dear?”

She grinned at him as she got out of the car, leaving it there for the valet to park. Chloe gave Maurice a hug as he held the door open for her and they walked into the building.

“I’m good Maurice. How’s your wife and the kids?”

“They’re good. Thanks for asking.”

Chloe unraveled her scarf and pulled off her gloves before digging into her bag and pulling out a Christmas card. She smiled as she handed it to Maurice.

“Merry Christmas Maurice.”

The older man blushed slightly as he rubbed the back of his neck.

“Aww shucks Chloe…you didn’t have to do that…”

His voice trailed off and Chloe patted him on the arm as he took the card and she made her way towards the elevator. It opened and before she disappeared inside of it she spoke.

“I know I didn’t have to…I wanted too. Send my best to your family.”

She waved as the doors closed in front of her and she headed up to Oliver’s apartment. When the elevators came to a halt and the doors slid open Bart was standing there with what looked like a cup of eggnog and a grin.

“Hey there Chloelicious! I was beginning to think I had dragged my fine behind all the way back to Metropolis and I wasn’t gonna get to see my favorite person.”

Chloe laughed as she walked into the apartment and gave Bart a hug.

“It’s good to see you. Even though I talk to you guys almost every day it’s just not the same as seeing you. When are you guys heading back to Metropolis for a longer stay?”
Bart shrugged.

“We go where we’re needed you know that…but if you wanted me to stay a little longer…”

Bart waggled his eyebrows and Chloe rolled her eyes before gently pushing him out of her way so she could say hello to everyone else. Five minutes later she had been bombarded by Victor, A.C., Dinah and Oliver, and was now holding her own cup of eggnog while glancing around the room.

She frowned slightly. Two people were missing; Lois and Clark…She knew Lois had decided to spend the holidays with Lucy and the General, but she had no clue where Clark was. Chloe felt a hand on the small of her back and she turned in time to see Oliver walk up beside her. There was a warm smile on his face.

“Looking for someone?”

“Just taking everything in. It’s a beautiful party Oliver.”

He nodded.

“Thanks. Everyone seems to be enjoying themselves and it’s different from my usual party of hundreds of people. We don’t have to worry about pretending to be something we’re not…we’ve all seen the worst and best of each other.”

He glanced pointedly at Chloe and she gave him a half smile as he continued speaking.

“And yet, we’re all still here. It’s been a tough year for all of us, but I’m looking forward to bring in the new year with a lot of positive changes…we all are.”

She nodded.

“I think that’s a great idea Ollie.”

Oliver nudged Chloe and when she looked at him with a raised eyebrow, he impulsively leaned down and gave her a friendly hug.

“Thanks…for everything this year…you saved my life…more than once. You’ll never know how grateful I am.”

Chloe smiled and hugged him back tightly.

“What are Sidekicks for?”

“You’re more than a Sidekick…and you know it. Clark’s on the balcony.”

Oliver pulled away and gave Chloe a wink before moving to join the guys over by the tree. Chloe frowned. Yeah she had been looking for Clark, but so what? What was that wink all about? Sometimes Chloe seriously had the feeling that Oliver knew more than he let on about a lot of things.

She gave a mental shrug before heading towards the balcony. She leaned against the open door and took a moment to watch Clark. He was standing with his hands against the railing looking out over Metropolis. His shoulders were slightly tensed and his eyes were closed.

He was on Oliver’s balcony, but his head was somewhere entirely different. She watched as his eyes moved frantically under his lids as he stretched his senses thin over the city …waiting… listening… protecting…

“Are you planning on standing there all night Chlo? Or are you coming out here with me?”

His voice startled her and her body straightened. She could hear the slight trace of humor in his voice and she raised an eyebrow.

“That depends, am I coming outside to be with Clark Kent or his weird twin that’s been hanging around lately?”

Clark chuckled and turned so his back was against the railing.

“Why don’t you come out here and find out.”

Chloe rolled her eyes, but walked out onto the balcony until she was standing beside Clark. It was quiet and she was cold. Clark watched as she rubbed her hands against her arms and he shrugged out of his jacket and placed it gently over her shoulders.

He saw surprise cross her face briefly before she turned away from him and leaned on the railing facing the city.

“It’s beautiful out.”

He nodded and looked at the skyline.

“Yeah, the city always looks beautiful this time of year.”

He glanced at her out of the corner of his eye and saw her hair glimmer in the moonlight. The why the light caught her eyes it was almost as if they sparkled like the stars in the sky. How could he not have realized his feelings sooner? He knew how…Lois.

They went through a ridiculous mating dance only to finally reach the pinnacle and be disappointed. They had gone out on dates, even made out a few times, but at the end of the day Lois just hadn’t know him and he couldn’t seem to understand her.

It wasn’t until they were having a movie marathon at his place one night that they both realized it. Clark had thought he came back for Lois, but the truth was she was just an excuse. He had missed Chloe…more than he realized.

He was terrified to admit to feeling anything more for Chloe than friendship, because he could deal with leaving a friend behind…but he couldn’t deal with losing more than that.

No one knew him like Chloe did. She knew his scars both physical and emotional, his likes and dislikes, she’d seen him at his best, at his worst, and she knew who and what he truly was. He’d treated her horrible at times and yet she had never once wavered on her loyalty to him.

He doesn’t deserve her, but he thinks he’s finally ready to take the next step; to plunge in with both feet. He opened his mouth but, before he could say anything Chloe’s voice breaks the silence.

“We should go inside…it’s cold. Plus Oliver and everyone are probably eating all the food.”

Chloe moved away from the balcony, pulled Clark’s jacket off, handed it to him and started to walk toward the door. Clark frowned and super sped to the door. He was half inside and half outside the door before Chloe even looked up.

When she did, she jumped slightly and glared at him.

“Clark what are you doing? Move…I’m cold.”

She slid so she was in the doorframe sideways and he held her arms as she frowned. She gave him a look of confusion.

“Clark…”

He opened his mouth, but before he could speak Oliver yelled out.

“Hey guys look…you’re under the mistletoe…you know what that means.”

The grin on their faces made the color rise slightly on Chloe’s cheeks as she ‘pffted’

“Oh come on…you’ve got to be kidding me?”

Clark cleared his throat, gave Chloe and innocent look, and shrugged.

“It is tradition…”

His voice trailed off and she looked at him with an ‘are you nuts’ kind of look. She opened her mouth to protest when six beepers went off simultaneously. They all glanced down and Chloe sighed in relief. It was the backup system at the tower. Something was going down in Metropolis.

Bart shrugged.

“Looks like Christmas Eve is ending early.”

They nodded as Oliver opened the divide the spare gear at his place. Clark started to move, but Oliver stopped his as he walked by. He glanced between Chloe and Clark.

“We got this one Clark…if we need you we’ll call.”
Clark frowned for a second before nodding.

“You’re sure?”

Oliver nodded and grinned before running out with the team leaving Chloe and Clark alone and under the mistletoe. It was quiet for a few minutes as Chloe’s heart beat sped up. Clark had been acting funny for a while now and the way he was looking at her, made her knees weak.

She promised herself her feels for Clark died the day he walked out on their friendship, but she’d been wrong. She tried to look away from him, but he held her gaze. She felt one of his arms pulls her closer and her hands braced themselves against his arms.

“Clark…you should help them…I mean they say they don’t need you, but what if something goes wrong…what if…”

He cut her off as he cupped her face in his hand. His voice was soft, but strong.

“Chlo…forget about the world tonight…all that’s wrong…all that’s right and just be here…with me.”

“I…”

“Don’t…”

He leaned in and closed the distance between them. The minute his lips touched hers, it brought her to life. She wrapped her arms around his neck and gave into him. She poured the last nine years of pent up emotion into the kiss the same way Clark did.

His hands traveled from her cheek to around her body as he consumed her, tasted her mouth with his. When they finally pulled apart they were both breathing hard. Clark mated his forehead with hers and spoke softly.

“Merry Christmas Chloe…”

Her heart felt light as he held her in his arms. She wasn’t sure where they were going to go from here, but she didn’t care. It was Christmas Eve and she had the man she’d always wanted holding her in his arms. She leaned back slightly so she could look up into his face.

Chloe gave him a warm smile and he returned it before placing a chaste kiss on her forehead.

“Merry Christmas Clark…”
