Buffy was pissed. It was after nine and she’d just gotten out of her stupid job at the Doublemeat palace. She’d gone home, showered and had been planning on spending a quiet night in when Spike called frantic about something saying she needed to come to his crypt immediately.

So here she was, cold and grumpy trudging through the graveyard mumbling to herself. Why hadn’t she just hung up on him? Buffy sighed, she knew why. She could ask herself that question a million times and the answer would still be staring her in the face even if she didn’t want to see it.

She had feelings for Spike. Feelings that weren’t disgust, or hatred, feelings that she knew were going to get her into trouble. She didn’t bother knocking when she got to his door, just pushed it open and frowned at the darkness surrounding her.

“I swear you better have a good reason for dragging me all the way out here or I’m gonna…”

“SURPRISE!”

Buffy froze as light filled the room. Xander, Willow, Dawn and a sour looking Spike stood there, party hats on, noise makers in hand. That’s when it hit her, today was her birthday. How could she have gone through the whole day and not even realize it?

It just goes to show how off she really was. She grinned at her friends and made her way into the crypt.

“Guys…I don’t even know what to say.”

Willow moved toward her, hugging her tightly followed by Xander and Dawn. Her sister laughed and motioned around the crypt, which was decorated with balloons and streamers.

“Were you surprised?”

“Very.”

“We have cake!”

Buffy let dawn drag her towards the food and spent the next fifteen minutes opening her gifts and laughing with her friends. When she noticed Spike standing off to the side she moved away from the small group and went to stand next to him.

He gave her a sideways glance before looking back at her friends. Things had been tense between them lately and he had no intention of being the one to make the first move this time. She sighed when he continued to ignore her presence.

She held up her plate and he raised an eyebrow.

“Cake? It’s chocolate…”

Spike rolled his eyes.

“Did you want something slayer?”

She frowned and shrugged as she looked away from him.

“Just wanted to say thanks…you know for this. Letting them do this here.”

He snorted.

“It’s not like I had a bloody choice. It was the niblets idea…”

She swallowed hard.

“Well thanks anyway.”

He gave her a curt nod and her shoulders slumped slightly as she moved back toward her friends. He watched as Willow said something brightening her mood. Dawn walked towards him, plate in hand. She handed him the cake, which he took with a smile.

“This was a really great idea Spike. I haven’t seen her smile like this in a while. Thank you so much.”

He shrugged and patted Dawn’s head lightly.

“Not a problem niblet now get, go join the party.”

“Aren’t you coming?”

“In a minute.”

She nodded. Spike’s eyes settled on Buffy and his heart warmed. Even though she didn’t know it he’d put that smile on her face. After weeks of attempting to bring her out of her shell he’d finally succeeded.

Maybe he wasn’t one hundred percent happy with their arrangement, but if it’s what she needed right now he’d give it to her, because even though she didn’t want to believe it all he wanted to do was make her happy.
