Lex sighed as he made his way down the hallway to his study. He was exhausted. It had been a long few days. His business trip had lasted longer than it was supposed to and caused more trouble than it should have. As he got closer to the study his pace slowed and a grin settled on his face.

The lights were on, and that could only mean one thing. His intrepid reporter must have gotten his message earlier today and made herself comfortable at the mansion while waiting for him to come home. Lex leaned against the doorframe and watched as Chloe frowned down at the papers in front of her.

He could see her teeth digging into her lower lip, her furrowed brows, the look of concentration on her face, and he couldn’t remember ever seeing anything as beautiful. He shook his head slightly as he fingered the box in his pocket.

Chloe was an amazing woman. She had a quick tongue, intelligence, beauty, and a good head for business, but never in a million years would he have thought that they would end up together. They were as different as fire and ice, and yet they complimented each other perfectly.

Lex wasn’t even one hundred percent sure how it started, but he was pretty sure it came about from an argument they had been having. One minute they were yelling at each other and the next their lips were doing the battling.

Lex smirked at the memory. He remembered that night for one reason only, sex with Chloe on his pool table. He’d never heard a woman as vocal as her. She was intoxicating…like a drug…addicting and that’s why as he fingered the small box his heart rate picked up slightly.

He cleared his throat and watched her jump slightly before turning to face him. He smiled.

“Penny for your thoughts?”

“Lex…you’re back.”

He nodded and made his way into the study. Chloe stood and grinned at him as she took his briefcase from him and tossed it on the couch. Lex’s arms went around her waist as he yanked her body closer to his. She grunted, but wrapped her arms around his neck.

“Hello.”

She titled her head to the side and gave him a warm look.

“Hi.”

Lex leaned in and captured her lips. She moaned into his mouth as he caressed her back. When they broke apart Chloe leaned back slightly and started to play with the collar on his shirt.

“How long have you been here?”

“Just an hour or so. I’ve been attempting to finish this article, but there’s something about it that’s bothering me.”

She shrugged and Lex raised an eyebrow.

“And what might that be?”

“I don’t know…that’s the problem. Oh well. How was your trip?”

Lex chuckled at her ability to change the subject; she was almost as good at it as he was. He stepped back, grabbed him briefcase and brought it over to his desk before sitting down.

“Lonely. Tell me again why you refuse to travel with me?”

Chloe sighed and she leaned against one of the chairs in front of his desk.

“Because I have work at the Planet…school…and because you know that no one knows about us Lex.”

He nodded.

“Ah, the proverbial elephant in the room. Are we ever going to discuss that?”

She made a face and then pouted as she plopped down in the chair. Lex attempted to hide his smile at her antics.

“Pouting is very unbecoming Chloe.”

She rolled her eyes.

“All I hear is blah blah blah…”

Lex shook his head.

“That’s mature.”

She met his eyes and her pout deepened.

“We've discussed this Lex and I thought we agreed to keep it between us. Neither of us wants the press sniffing at the door and…”

He cut her off with a raised eyebrow.

“Oh so you mean to tell me not all journalists have as much integrity as you do my dear?”

She glared at him.

“If you’re going to mock me I’m done with this conversation.”

He sighed.

“I’m not mocking you. I’m just tired of hiding our relationship. As a matter of fact….”

Lex paused briefly as he stood and walked around the desk.

“…things are about to get even more difficult to hide out from.”

A look of confusion settled over Chloe’s face.

“What are you talking about Lex?”

He turned on his heel, pulled the box from his pocket, stood in front of Chloe, and opened the box. He swallowed hard before speaking.

“I’m aware that this might seem out of the blue and I realize you most likely think I’m going out of my mind, but I’m not. I’m fairly certain that you and I can make a life together Chloe. You drive me crazy at times, but you challenge me, and you call me on my bullshit…and I need someone like that in my life.”

Lex took a breath before continuing.

“Marry me…”

Chloe opened and closed her mouth several times as she glanced between Lex and the ring. He stood there with his eyebrow raised for about three minutes until he could no longer take the silence.

“Can it be that I finally found something to shut you up? Amazing…to think if I’d only done this earlier…”

His voice trailed off, grin firmly planted on his face as Chloe glared at him.

“Are you crazy?”

“That depends on who you ask.”

“Lex! This is not a joke! You just proposed!”

“I know…customarily when someone proposes it is usually required that the person who is not proposing answers the question.”

Chloe nodded.

“Right…I know…I’m just…”

Her voice trailed off and he spoke softly.

“Thinking?”

“Yes…thinking.”

He seemed to consider her statement before nodding.

“Okay well why don’t you think while I just sit right here and wait.”

He handed her the ring box and sat on the arm of his couch. Chloe glanced down at the ring as tears pulled at the edge of her eyes. She had no clue what to do. She and Lex hadn’t even been together for a full year, but this thing with her and Lex…it just felt…right.

Lex was a pain in the ass, but he was her pain in the ass. She looked up and caught him watching her. She gave him half a smile and then ran over and through her arms around him before letting out a heavy sigh.

“Oh alight…you wore me down…”

Lex chuckled as he his hand ran down her hair before pulling her to him for a kiss. He slipped the ring on her finger and they sat like that, kissing for what felt like forever before Lex broke the silence. There was a smirk on his face when he spoke.

“You know what this means don’t you?”

“Hmm…”

“It’s time to tell people about us.”

Chloe groaned and hid her face in Lex’s shoulder as he let out a deep laugh. Chloe was a handful and she gave Lex a run for his money, but it didn’t matter. He didn’t have the slightest idea how he’d gotten so lucky. You know what they say…opposites attract and Lex and Chloe were definitely opposites. But Lex didn’t care because he was happy and happiness was rare for Luthors.
