Prompt: “Conner sees the Green Arrow run over the family pet by mistake.” from Smallvillefics written for the Chlollie Summer Lovefest
Chloe leaned against the wall in the kitchen and frowned at her 7-year-old son as he shoved his tiny fists into the garbage can, a pile of stuff beneath them.
“Conner, sweetheart…what in the world are you doing?”
The young boy’s blonde head whipped around to face his mother, dried tear marks on his cheeks, brows furrowed in anger. He bent down and grabbed another handful of stuff before tossing it into the garbage with a force she’d never seen him use.
Chloe took a step forward a noticed his bow in the trash. She raised an eyebrow and crossed her arms over her chest.
“You love that bow…what’s going on?”
He sniffled and kicked at the now overflowing garbage before turning in her direction. She waited patiently for him to speak. He wiped his sleeve across his nose, eyes watering up again.
“I hatethe Green Arrow!”
Chloe blinked, startled at the resentment in her sons voice. To Oliver’s delight Conner had always been the Green Arrows biggest fan, but ever since he nicked Archer, the family dog, with his bike the other day Conner had been sporting extreme hate for his father’s alter ego.
“Honey, haven’t we gone over this? Archer is going to be fine. Good as new in two weeks tops. I’m sure the Green Arrow didn’t mean to hurt him. I’m sure it was an accident.”
Conner frowned at his Mother, eyes squinting at her, pout firmly in place.
“Why are you defending him?”
She opened her mouth right as Oliver made his way into the kitchen. He grinned at them, pulled open the fridge, grabbed a drink and turned to face his two favorite people.
“Morning Professor…Conner. How’s my favorite son today?”
Conner rolled his eyes.
“I’m your only son Dad.”
Oliver grinned.
“Doesn’t mean you’re not my favorite.”
His eyes caught sight of the bow sticking out of the trash and he raised an eyebrow.
“What’s your bow doing in the trash buddy?”
Chloe stood slowly and winced at Conner’s next words.
“I’m throwing all of my stupid Green Arrow stuff out. I don’t like him anymore.”
She glanced at Oliver and he looked stricken. She bit her lip, reached out a squeezed his arm gently. Oliver floundered with what to say.
“Conner…I’m sure the Green Arrow didn’t mean to hurt Archer. He probably feels really really bad about it.”
The irate 7-year-old glared at his parents.
“Why is everyone in this stupid house taking the Green Arrow’s side instead of mine?”
“We’re not--”
“No, I don’t care. I’m going in my room. I have more stuff to throw out.”
He grumbled leaving his worried parents staring after him. Oliver sighed glancing at his wife.
“He’s never gonna forgive me is he?”
She pursed her lips together.
“I think it’s time for plan B.”
********
Conner had just finished tossing another pile of trash into the garbage when the doorbell rang. He saw his mother come down the stairs and pull open the door as he was walking by. He froze as he caught the sight of green leather out of the corner of his eye.
He turned slowly toward the door head tilting so he could get a better look from behind his mother. Chloe could feel Conner behind her and she hid her smile as she cleared her throat and held the door halfway open.
“Can I help you?”
He nodded.
“I came by to check on your dog.”
Oliver marveled at his wife’s acting ability, but then again he didn’t know why. She was good at everything she put her mind to.
“Our dog? So what you make house calls now?”
“May I come in?”
“Absolutely not.”
Conner moved out from behind Chloe arms crossed over his chest, glare on his face.
“What are you doing here?”
“I was coming to check on your dog…and apologize for what happened the other night.”
Conner scoffed and scrunched his nose in distaste, which Oliver swore he got from Chloe who also did that when something she didn’t like happened.
“Apology not accepted. You’re supposed to be a vigilante hero not a dog runner-overer…why were you even here anyway? What were you doing on our property? Well…are you going to answer me Mr. Green Arrow?”
Chloe bit her lip and Oliver could see the humor dancing in her eyes. He pursed his lips together and promised to make her pay for that later.
“What’s your name kid?”
Conner snorted.
“What’s yours?”
“I’m the Gre--”
“That’s not your real name.”
“I--”
Conner waved him off.
“Forget it. It doesn’t matter. You aren’t my favorite hero anymore. You hit my dog with your very cool but stupid bike.”
“Actually I only grazed the dog’s leg, though that’s bad enough. I heard he’s going to be just fine. But I wanted to apologize anyway because I know how important family pets are kid. And to answer your earlier question I was tracking a mugger and he came into this neighborhood. That’s why I was here.”
The frown left Conner’s face, arms dropping to his sides as excitement danced in his eyes.
“A mugger?”
He nodded.
“Yeah and your dog heard the guy so he came out barking…to protect his family that he must love an awful lot and he ran right towards us. I tried to jerk my bike out of the way, but the front wheel grazed his paw, and then I saw you in the window.”
Conner gave him a suspicious look as he rolled the story around in his head.
“Why didn’t you stay then and apologize?”
“I saw you opening the door and I had to make sure the mugger was gone so I followed him off the street. By the time I got back your Mom was already out there and things looked like they were being taken care of…honest kid I didn’t mean to hurt your dog.”
Chloe watched with bated eyes as Conner sized up Green Arrow and gave him a thoughtful look.
“Why’d you come back to apologize now? I’m just some kid.”
Oliver grinned.
“I hear you’re my biggest fan…”
He squinted his eyes at his Mother before looking back at the Green Arrow. He rolled his eyes.
“You know my Mother don’t you?”
Shock registered on Oliver’s face before he covered it up.
“What? Why would you think that?”
He shrugged.
“Because I think she’s your biggest fan. How do you think I found out about you?”
Oliver opened his mouth and Conner smirked as he looked between his shocked parents. He nodded in the direction of the door as he headed towards the stairs.
“Thanks for the apology…I don’t hate you so much anymore, Mom?”
“Uh yeah sweetie?”
She moved toward the steps and he leaned closer to her and he put his hand up by her ear, but whispered loud enough for Oliver to hear.
“Can you tell Dad that next time he runs over Archer to apologize for being clumsy with his bike? Cause I really love Archer and I’d hate for something bad happen to him. He’s like…the coolest dog ever! Thanks!”
He ran up the rest of the steps and disappeared into his room as Chloe and Oliver stood there mouths wide open. When he finally knocked himself out of his stupor he pushed through the door and shut it behind him with a grunt. Chloe’s voice was awed.
“How did he know?”
Oliver shrugged as he pulled down his hood.
“Seriously he’s your son. I’ve stopped trying to figure where he gets his information and who his sources are. Damn reporter blood in runs in your freaking gene pool.”
She grinned.
“He played you…”
Oliver shook his head.
“Our 7-year-old son played me…and damn if he didn’t do it well. That kids gonna be trouble.”
Chloe wrapped her arms around Oliver’s neck, mischief in her eyes.
“Good thing he has us as parents then, or he’d never get caught. So…Green Arrow…I hear you’re in the business of saving damsels in distress.”
He smirked wrapping his arms around her waist and placing a soft kiss on her neck.
“Hmm…as a matter of fact I am.”
“Well this damsel could use a little saving.”
“No worries Professor…I’ve got you.”
