A loud thwack and a rush of air startled Oliver awake. He let out a loud groan as he opened his eyes briefly before slamming them shut to keep the bright rays of sunlight streaming in from the balcony out of his line of vision. He raised a hand to his head grimacing at the throbbing sensation in his skull.
Chloe grinned at her boyfriend and she plopped down into the chair next to their hotel room bed. “Rise and shine sleeping beauty…”Oliver grunted but popped one eye open under the shield of his hand. He arched an eyebrow and she motioned to the bed next to him.
His gaze fell to the sheets and he caught sight of a magazine lying beside him. When he saw the cover he scowled and let out another groan. He shifted to his side and sighed, voice hoarse as he spoke. “How bad is it?”
Chloe lifted the magazine off the bed opened it and flipped through several pages before landing on a page. She cleared her throat. “It’s that time of year again and you know what that means…Bruce Wayne’s annual New Year’s Eve bash! This year we had a particularly special treat in the form of Oliver Queen and his brood making their way to Gotham City for the festivities.”
Oliver snorted as he shifted his head against the pillow a grin forming on his lips, his voice slightly muffled. “Since when are we a brood?” Chloe glanced up from the magazine humor in her eyes. “Since we started traveling the world with two kids?”
Oliver smiled into his pillow before turning his head to the side and catching his girlfriend’s eyes. “Mia is hardly a kid and Nathan is nine now…a strapping young man if I do say so myself.” She chuckled and nudged him with her foot slightly her tone reprimanding.
“Quiet you, I’m not done yet. Ah, right here we are…Oliver Queen and Chloe Sullivan, better known to us as Chlollie--” Oliver scrunched his eyebrows cutting her off. “Chlollie?” She nodded. “Yeah…it’s our couple name…you know like Brangelina…apparently we’ve reached combination status, now stop cutting me off.”
He turned onto his back and grinned, arms resting behind his head as amusement danced on his face while she sat there trying to find her place in the magazine once again.
“—are making a splash on the society scene and people are wondering when the billionaire CEO plans on making an honest woman out of his long time girlfriend, finally making their brood one big happy family. Sources close to the couple say they expect them to take that ‘final leap’ any day now.”
Oliver rolled his eyes and shifted until he was sitting up, wincing at the quick movement as he spoke. “You need to tell Lois to stop talking to the press…it’s annoying. At this rate if I ever do propose you’ll know about it before I even ask.”
Chloe saw him wince and stuck her hand in the magazine to hold her place as she reached over to the nightstand grabbing the glass of water and aspirin she’d put their earlier in the morning handing it to him. He took it with a grateful look and nodded towards the magazine. “All done reading?”
She shrugged glancing between the magazine and him. “It’s all pretty basic…it’s not the story I brought in here to show you…” He tossed back the pills and the water before replacing the glass on the nightstand and arching an eyebrow. “No?”
She shook her head and opened the magazine back up. “Nope…it’s the pictures.” He sighed and his gaze dropped the cover once again. He pursed his lips. “How drunk was I last night?” Chloe smirked. “Very drunk…” He pointed to the cover. “What exactly was I doing on the cover?”
“I was dragging you back into Bruce’s party after the ball dropped and when you saw the photographer from People magazine you decided that pose would make an amusing front cover and then proceeded to invite him into the party…which led to the four page spread inside.”
He made a face as she handed him the magazine. He glanced over the pages she had it open to and he shook his head, pictures of him drunk and hugging all their friends littering the pages. He turned to the last page and his face softened as they caught a photo of him, Chloe, Mia and Nathan pointing up at the large ball Bruce had created to drop for the New Year.
The lighting was perfect and he was squatting behind Nathan, their heads turned up faces full of awe, Chloe beside them her face bright in the midst of a laugh as she leaned into a grinning Mia. It was probably the best shot they’d taken of him all evening.
He glanced away from the magazine and up at his girlfriend who was watching him with warm green eyes. He smiled. “I hope we have a copy of this picture…” She tilted her head to the side. “I already called them this morning, asked if they wouldn’t mind sending us a copy.”
He nodded. “How much is this gonna set me back when we get back to Metropolis? Do I need to call the PR team?” Chloe smiled and slid off the chair crawling into the bed, his arm lifting for her so she could lie against him.
“Nope…you might have been drunk, but the article was well written and the guy who wrote it said even though you were the picture of intoxication you made sure the kids had a good time and kept your antics to strictly funny dancing and sexual innuendos towards me…they called you domesticated and a family man.”
He seemed surprised by her statement as he looked down at the blonde against his chest. “Really?” She nodded. “Yup.” He relaxed against the sheets and grinned before noticing how quiet the room was. His brows furrowed as he rubbed her back lightly.
“Speaking of family…where are Mia and Nathan?” Chloe shifted so she was resting her chin against his naked chest lightly. “They went to grab lunch with Bruce…I figured you’d be passed out for a bit and I didn’t want them to wake you.” He kissed the top of her head and tightened his arm around her.
“You’re too good to me Sidekick.” She placed a soft kiss against his chest and nodded. “I know…” Oliver chuckled and let out a content sigh, voice light. “Anything else happen that I should be aware of?” Chloe pursed her lips as she glanced at him. “Nope...”
“Hmm…so we can maybe go back to bed?” He gave her a hopeful look as she ran a hand up his stomach and to his chest while nodded. He kissed the top of her hair and watched her as she closed her eyes. Oliver glanced over to his discarded suit jacket strewn across the dresser and let out a long breath as he caught sight of the bulge in the side pocket.
At least he hadn’t made a fool of himself and proposed drunk while in front of hundreds of people…So much for his special New Years Eve plan…oh well there was always their anniversary in February...
