‘Runaway’

“Ooh, she’s a little runaway. Daddy’s girl ran fast, all those things he couldn’t say. Ooh, she’s a little runaway.” –Bon Jovi

Oliver stood in the living room his hand rubbing his temple lightly as he listened to the guys arguing. It was Saturday afternoon and his team, of grown men, were fighting about what they were going to order for lunch. At this point, Oliver was starving and he didn’t give a shit what they ate as long as something was ordered and they all shut the hell up.

He sighed and plopped down on the couch glancing at the ground where his seven month old daughter was lying on her back, blanket beneath her. Maura’s small hands slapped away at the toy dangling above her head and Oliver grinned.

He leaned forward and caught her gaze. “Hey there munchkin, do you miss Mommy as much as I do?” He whispered with a smile on his lips causing the seven month old to make a loud cooing noise before giggling. The noise caught the attention of the team and Bart dropped his gaze to the baby on the floor.

“Hey there mini mamacita, are we not paying enough attention to you?” He joked while zipping from one side of her and then back to the other causing her eyes to go wide as she screeched and held her arms out to Bart.

Victor chuckled, “She get’s that from Ollie, God forbid we don’t pay him enough attention he gets all petulant,” He teased as his friend gave him a dirty look. AC chuckled and shook his head.

Oliver pushed himself off the couch and glared at them. “Did we figure out what we’re ordering yet?” He asked before glancing at his watch. “Come on guys Chloe and Tess are going to be back in like an hour, I don’t know why you can’t just agree on something.” He said while crossing his arms over his chest. Chloe and Tess had been working at Watchtower for most of the morning and then decided to grab lunch and do a little shopping.

Oliver had told her to go, have fun and take as long as she wanted, that he and the guys would watch Maura, but he was currently regretting that decision as the fighting started again. He could hear Bart yelling about Mexican as Victor said something about Chinese meanwhile AC was telling them they should have hamburgers and salads. Oliver stared at them for a minute before glancing at Maura who was watching him intently.

He grinned at her, brought his finger to his lips and whispered ‘Shh’ before making his way into the hallway and to the kitchen. He rummaged through the drawers for the tae out menu for the Italian place and placed an order for two large pies, some pasta, two salads and a meatball hero. That should satisfy everyone’s cravings. About fifteen minutes later he walked back down the hallway, phone in hand.

The guys were still standing in the middle of the living room arguing when he opened his mouth to tell them to shut up. But something stopped him. His eyes fell to the blanket on the floor and they widened. “Guys!” He shouted causing everyone to freeze and then slowly turn towards him.

Oliver’s face had paled as he pointed towards the blanket. “Where’s Maura?” He asked as his eyes searching the floor as panic welled in his chest. He’d been gone for less than twenty minutes. How could she just be gone?

Victor’s head jerked towards the blanket before glancing around the room. “Alright guys, spread out she couldn’t have gotten far.” He said as Bart and AC carefully spread out.

“Oh, mini mamacita, where are you?” Bart called out as he zipped around the apartment. Oliver watched him as he ran a hand through his hair. Chloe was going to kill him. She was never going to trust him with Maura again.

Oliver frowned as he straightened up and held up his hands. "Guys listen up. We need to split up. AC you take the upstairs, not that I think Maura could get up there, but just in case." He paused and turned towards Victor. "Vic, you take the workout room and the downstairs guest room." There was a slight rush of wind and flash of red. "Bart, you keep checking the hallways, near the elevator and the balcony." He told the youngest member of the team.

Bart nodded. "I'm on it Bossman," The words were barely out of his mouth before there was another flash of red and he was gone. Oliver glanced around. "I'm going to finish checking in here and then go through the office." When they nodded, but didn't move right away he waved the off. "Well go, what are you waiting for?" He asked annoyed.

Oliver watched them scatter across the apartment as he moved towards the couch and started lifting up pillows. He couldn't believe he'd managed to lose his daughter. Maura had just starting crawling a month ago, but she was a fast learner like her Mother. Oliver let out a frustrated sigh as he checked behind the couch, chairs, and love seat, but still nothing.

He moved towards her blanket and toy as anxiety built in his chest. Oliver tried to focus and see if she'd left any trail leading to where she went, but apparently he couldn't get that lucky. After spending ten minutes tearing through the entire living room he made his way into the hallway and headed towards his office.

The fear in his gut started to intensify as he called out to his daughter. "Maura, baby, you're scaring Daddy. Can you come out honey?" He knew it was probably silly since Maura wasn't actually talking yet, but he had to try. Maybe the sound of his voice would draw her out.

Oliver moved over to the clock face and was about to start looking around when the phone rang. He glanced at the cordless phone on his desk and grabbed it roughly, pressing the power button as he searched the ground near his equipment room. "Yeah," He said onto the phone, frustration lacing his voice.

Chloe frowned as she shifted the phone to her other ear as she held the door open for Tess who was making he'd way out of the store behind her. "Hey you, everything okay?" She asked cautiously as Tess fell in step beside her.

Oliver froze as his grip on the phone tightened. "Chloe...Hey, no everything is fine I was just, uh," He paused as he tried to come up with a reason for his outburst. "The guys are fighting, you know how they get." He said with a nervous laugh.

Chloe arched an eyebrow at the tone of Oliver's voice. He sounded nervous about something, but since she and Tess were on their way back to the penthouse she decided to let it go for the time being. "How's Maura? Do you put her down for her nap yet?" She asked while glancing at the bag Tess held up to her.

Oliver paused. "Uh, yeah. Actually that's what she's doing right now. She's napping. I should probably go check on her, so I'll see you later when you get home?" He asked doing his best not to let her know he was trying to rush her off the phone.

Chloe frowned again. "Yeah, okay. Tess and I should be back at the apartment in about fifteen minutes," She told him while pulling out her keys and pressing the keyless entry to the car.

Oliver swore as he mumbled a 'okay, love you bud's and hung up on Chloe. How the hell was he supposed to find Maura in fifteen minutes? He stood up and moved toward the hallway. "Guys Chloe's going to be home in fifteen minutes! Hustle guys we need to find Maura!" His heart was once again beating quickly as he started checking his office again.

"I'm a horrible Father," He whispered to himself as his chest tightened. He put the phone on his desk and got on his hands and knees to look under his desk. Oliver was about to call out to the guys again as he stuck his head under the desk, but anything he was about to say was cut off by the site in front of him.

There underneath his desk in the corner was his daughter, face pressed against the ground, legs bunched up under her small body, tiny butt in the air, fast asleep. Oliver let out a long breath and he chuckled lightly as he shook his head. Relief filled him as he reached under the desk and gently pulled her out and into his arms.

Maura made a small whimpering noise and Oliver rubbed her back as he rested her body against his chest. Her head fell on his shoulder as she fused slightly, shifting in his arms. Oliver 'shushed' her as he continued running his hand up and down her back. "Come here my little runaway." He said with a chuckle as he stood up and moved towards the hallway.

He placed a hand on her head and called out quietly. "Hey guys look who I found," He said as he walked towards the living room. Bart was the first person in front of him and he grinned.

"Aw, little mamacita is all conked out. Where'd you find her?" He asked glad that they weren't going to have to tell Chloe that they lost her daughter. She was one scary blonde.

Oliver smirked. "She fell asleep under my desk," He said still not able to believe she got all the way over there and was comfortable enough to fall asleep.

Victor moved into the room with AC close behind him. He arched an eyebrow. "She fell asleep under your desk? Man your kid is weird." He joked as he dropped down in one of the chairs. Oliver sent a glare in his friend’s direction as he rocked his body gently to keep Maura from waking up.

AC smiled at his friend holding his daughter. "Well you're just lucky you found her before Chloe got back." He said with a smirk as Victor and Bart laughed.

"Lucky he found who?"

The sound of Chloe's voice startled all four men into turning around. Oliver swallowed hard as he saw Chloe standing in the archway to the living room two bags in each hand, eyebrow arched with Tess at her side. He cleared his throat. "Uh, you know that's kind of a long story." He said letting his voice trail off.

Victor stood up as he glanced between the two women and Oliver. "You know, I think it's time for us to head out." He said while nudging Bart towards the hall. The younger man pouted.

"What about the food?" He asked wide eyed. Victor motioned towards Oliver as he eyed Bart and spoke. "I don't think you want to stay..." He let his voice trail off handmade a face. He shoved the youngest team member towards the door as he gave Chloe and Tess a small smile.

AC followed behind them and paused near Tess."You're probably going to want to come with us." He said lightly while nodding towards the elevator.

Tess arched an eyebrow at AC before glancing at Chloe. "I suppose I'll head out as well. Thank you for letting me help with the upgrades at Watchtower. I had a nice afternoon." She said trying to disguise the surprise in her voice. Even after close to nine months since Oliver had rescued her from Lex, she still couldn't believe she and Chloe had gotten so close.

Tess shook herself from her thoughts and smiled at Chloe. "I'll talk to you later." She glanced at Oliver and nodded in his direction. "Oliver."

He nodded back, "Tess," and then watches her head to the elevator. Oliver glanced at Chloe and grinned. "Hey there, Sidekick."

Chloe cocked her head to the side and walked into the room placing her bags on the floor before making her way over to the couch. She bent down, placed a kiss against the back of Maura's head and then sat carefully on the couch next to Oliver. She watched him for a minute before arching an eyebrow at him. "Well?" She asked wanting to know why all of their friends ran away when she got home.

Oliver sighed dramatically as he sent a sideways glance in her direction. "Okay, okay...Let me ask you a question. On a scale of one to ten how mad would you be if I said I might have lost our daughter for oh say fifteen to twenty minutes." He asked casually.

Chloe's eyes widened and she opened her mouth, but before she could say anything he held up one finger and pointed towards Maura. "You cant yell, she's sleeping." He pointed out very glad that their seventh month old was sleeping on his chest.

Chloe pursed her lips as she glanced as his cheeky grin. She shook her head. "I'll give you a ten minute head start to the bedroom and then you're in trouble and before you ask no, it's not the fun kind." She told him sternly.

Oliver sighed and then groaned. If only their stupid friends could keep their mouths shut. "This is all AC's fault," He grumbled while getting up and walking towards the stairs to put Maura to bed.

Chloe watched him go amusement on her face as she listened to him mumbling to himself. Sometimes her boyfriend was such a big baby, he was lucky she loved him.
