Prologue
(Clark POV)
The air was cold and thick with fog. I turned my head and glanced at the buildings that were on fire…the streets were desolate. There wasn’t a person in sight. Debris littered every inch of the ground. I ran. The ground beneath my feet was dissipating with every step I took. I let out loud puffs of air as I ran to safety. I rounded the corner and felt the cold air choking me, twisting around my neck…squeezing.
I fell to my knees and when I looked up a man was standing there. I couldn’t make out his face through the fog but his piercing red eyes gleamed from his stance in front of me. He spoke to me but I couldn’t understand the words he was saying. He reached out his hand, touched my chest and a bright light enveloped my body as I screamed in agony…
I bolted upright in bed. My hair was matted to my forehead from sweat and I was breathing heavy. I sighed. That’s the fourth time this week I’ve had that nightmare. It always felt so real. I glanced over at my alarm clock and the bright red numbers glared back at me. 4:47. I shook my head and ran my hand over my face and through my hair.
There was no point in going back to sleep now…I have to get up for school in another two hours or so anyway…I might as well make use of the time and do my chores. I got up out of bed and searched through my closet for something to wear. I threw on my blue flannel shirt, a pair of jeans and went downstairs to grab a drink before I went to work in the barn.
When I got into the kitchen I saw my dad already dressed and looking out the kitchen window with a cup of coffee in his right hand. He must have heard me walking into the room because he turned around and raised his eyebrow at me. He had a small smile on his face.
“Morning son…what are you doing up this early?”
I shrugged and walked over to the refrigerator to get some milk.
“Couldn’t sleep.”
I saw his frown out of the corner of my eye and I sighed on the inside. He wasn’t going to let this go…
“Son…is everything ok? You’ve seemed a little off ever since Alicia…died.”
I turned and gave him a slight glare. There was too much going on and I really couldn’t deal with having this conversation right now.
“You mean since she was murdered…don’t you?”
He sighed and placed his empty cup in the sink as he spoke in a gentle voice.
“Clark…I know how hard things have been for you…and I’m sorry about Alicia son…I truly am. But you need to move on. You’ve been cooped up on this farm for weeks and it’s not healthy. I haven’t even seen you with Chloe or Lex lately.”
Chloe…it’s been about five days since she told me that Alicia told her my secret. I wasn’t sure who I was mad at more. Alicia…Chloe…or myself. I’ve been avoiding her since she came to talk to me about it. I just didn’t know how to deal with her knowing. I still don’t. I spent the whole weekend going over how I was going to come clean with her…I’m scared she’ll leave because of my secret like Pete did…and I don’t know what I’d do without her friendship…but she already knew everything…except for my extraterrestrial past…and she didn’t seem to care.
So I’ve decided that when I go into school today…I’ll talk to her. After everything Chloe and I have been through…I think…I think I can trust her with who I am. I put the milk back in the fridge and turned to face my dad. They’ve been so worried about me lately and I’ve only been making it worse with the way I’ve been snapping at both of them since everything happened. I sighed.
“I’m sorry dad. There’s just a lot going on right now. I know you and mom only mean the best. I’m sorry for snapping at you before…I really just haven’t been sleeping well, and I guess it’s a mixture of things.”
He nodded and glanced at me appraisingly.
“Any particular reason you haven’t been sleeping well?”
I shrugged and looked at the floor. I wasn’t sure I was ready to tell anyone about the nightmares I’d been having…not even my parents.
“No…just a lot on my mind I guess…I’m gonna go do my chores. I’ll see you after school dad.”
I sped off to the barn. I picked up a bale of hay and started piling them on top of one another. As I continued doing my chores I felt a slight breeze make it’s way into the barn. It was cold and it sent chills down my spine. I turned and gazed out the door, but nothing was there. I walked cautiously over to the barn door and peered outside of it. Nothing…there wasn’t a damn thing there. I shook my head and laughed to myself. I was seriously becoming highly paranoid. I heard my mom calling my name so I glance at my watch. Crap! I’m gonna be late for school…how did all that time pass so fast? Hadn’t I been using my abilities to do my chores? I shook my head. I guess not. I sped into the kitchen and stopped in front of the table. The napkins blew off with a gust of wind and my mom shook her head.
Her voice was reprimanding in a casual way.
“Clark what have I told you about blowing in here?”
I raised an eyebrow and smiled.
“Not to?”
I grinned at her and she shook her head and smiled.
“Here eat some breakfast.”
I inclined my head and moved it back and forth. I grabbed a piece of toast and some bacon from the table.
“I don’t have time. I’m gonna be late for school.”
She frowned and glanced at the time.
“Then you better get going there’s probably going to be a bit of traffic.”
I shrugged.
“I’m just gonna run today…I don’t want to be late I have to talk to Chloe about something.”
I saw her nod and a slight smile appeared on her face.
“I’m glad. We haven’t seen her here in a while…I was starting to get worried.”
I laughed and gave her a kiss on the cheek.
“You worry to much. I’ll see you later.”
And I sped off to school. Everything was going to be ok…I’d talk to Chloe and she’d understand…hopefully. Then maybe…thing’s wouldn’t be so strained between us and we could finally get our friendship back on track. It would be nice to have a friend again who I didn’t have to hide everything from…someone I could talk to about what goes on in my life. Sometimes I really missed Pete…
I frowned as I made my way to school. Only two blocks away…for some reason I couldn’t shake the feeling that someone was watching me…but that was impossible…no one could see me when I moved this fast. And yet the feeling was there. As I picked up speed and looked into the field next to me I could have sworn I saw a pair of red glowing eyes out their…but I passed by to fast to really be sure.
I shook my head and stopped right outside the school behind some trees. It was just my imagination…I really needed to get these nightmares out of my head…because that’s all they were…dreams…they didn’t mean a thing…
