One Event Chapter (4/6)

Chapter 5

Chapter 4 Part A
(Lex POV)

I placed the phone back in its cradle and smiled slightly. Great, I was able to get in touch with everyone and they should all be here soon. I’m glad Clark finally trusted me enough to ask for my help with something important. I stood up and moved away from my desk. I went over to grab a glass of scotch right as the door to my study opened.

I glanced over and saw the head of my security standing at the door. I raised an eyebrow and he spoke in an apologetic tone.

“I apologize for interrupting you sir, but there is a Lana Lang here to see you. Should I let her in?”

I waved my hand and nodded as I took a sip from my glass.

“Yes, please tell her to come right in and you’d do well to remember that Lana is always welcome. Don’t make her wait for an announcement again.”

He nodded as he moved back out the door.

“Yes sir.”

I moved so I was leaning against the front of my desk and waited for Lana to make her way into the study. Hmm, I wonder what she’s doing here not that she needs a reason…I didn’t have to wait long. About three minutes later Lana made her way through the doors and I smiled.

She returned the smile, but I could see that it didn’t reach her eyes. She stood in front of me shuffling her feet back and forth. When she didn’t speak right away I broke the tension in the room. My smile widened and I spoke amiably.

“So, to what do I owe the pleasure of this visit?”

She shrugged and finally met my gaze. I watched her open and close her mouth two times before she cleared her throat and spoke.

“I’m sorry for barging in like this…I know we haven’t been on the friendliest of terms lately with Jason, those element things, and Isabel…I just…I wanted to come by and apologize about everything.”

She gave me a small smile, which I returned and stepped forward slightly as she continued.

“We’ve known each other a long time Lex…I shouldn’t have been so quick to judge. You’ve always been a good friend to me; and Jason…well I’m done with him, his mother, and everything involving Isabel. I was hoping maybe we could bury the hatchet so to speak…what do you say?”

She had a hopeful look on her face and I had to grin. I nodded my head and moved in to give her a hug. I saw her smile widen and she readily accepted the hug. I felt her arms go around my neck and I grasped her waist tight and sighed.

God she smells amazing…thank god she’s finally through with Jason. Maybe now things can finally get back to normal. She released the hold on my neck and stepped back.

“So we’re good?”

“Absolutely.”

I turned around and headed back over to the drinks. I glanced back at her over my shoulder and spoke in a light tone.

“Just out of curiosity, what made you think we weren’t okay?”

She shrugged and put her bag on the table before sitting down on the couch. I poured some sparkling water into a glass and brought it over before sitting down across from her. I passed the glass to her and she took a sip before answering my question.

“I don’t know. We’ve been fighting a lot lately…I almost busted down your door a few times this year in a rage…”

I chuckled and she smiled before taking another sip of her drink.

“How is that different from your normal behavior?”

She swatted me lightly and laughed.

“You’re horrible Lex.”

I nodded my head.

“I hear that a lot. I’m not sure why though.”

I heard a beep coming from my desk. I got up and moved over to check my computer. As I was going through some files I heard Lana get up and move in my direction.

“So how are things?”

“Things are going well. How about you? There seems to be something on your mind…”

She glanced up at me and I saw her wince slightly before giving me a small smile and a shrug.

“I just came from the Kent farm.”

Ah…there in lies her visit. I spoke with Clark a good hour or so ago and last I heard he was with Chloe and Evan…I’m sure by now Lana knows about the baby…I wonder what she thinks about the baby…could that be why she’s here…

(Lana POV)

I watched as Lex sat down and glanced up from his computer.

“That’s interesting. I actually spoke with Clark not long ago.”

I moved over and sat down in the chair in front of Lex’s desk. I watched a look of wonder cross his face before I spoke.

“Really…what about?”

He smiled.

“The newest member of the Kent clan, Evan. It turns out he is second generation meteor infected and has the ability to age over night. Clark called and asked for my help. They are trying to find a way to prevent it from happening so I called in a few favors and I should have some of the best doctors and researchers here within an hour or so.”

I nodded and then sighed. It figures Clark would call Lex. I suppose that makes sense. I still can’t believe Evan is meteor infected…

“That’s really great of you Lex. I’m sure Clark appreciates the help.”

I could feel Lex’s eyes on me as I fidgeted with my hands. He leaned forward, folded his hands, and spoke in a low voice.

“What’s bothering you Lana and do not say ‘nothing’…I know you better than that.”

My mouth turned up slightly at the corner as I looked at him. It’s true. Believe it or not Lex new me pretty well. I think I’d go as far as to say he knows me better then most people. Maybe even Clark. For some reason Lex has always been easy to talk to. I might as well come clean.

“I went over to the farm today because I thought…I thought maybe Clark and I could give our relationship a second chance…or technically a third chance, but I guess it’s a little too late for that.”

I watched a frown cross his face.

“What makes you think that?”

I raised an eyebrow in his direction and gave him an incredulous look.

“Because he has Chloe.”

Before Lex could interrupt me I waved my hand to cut him off and continued.

“Chloe has loved Clark since before I can remember, but I never thought Clark felt that way about her. I mean yeah, they sort of had a thing freshmen year, but it was nothing. I figured that even though we weren’t together…he’d always sort of wait for me.”

I glanced back at Lex and he was listening. Patiently waiting for me to continue. So I did.

“It sounds stupid. I left…I spent all this time with Jason and when everything fell apart I guess I wanted the comfort of someone I know loves me…then today I went by the farm to see if Clark needed help with Evan…and he was with Chloe. The three of them were sleeping…Lex- the sight was beautiful and heart breaking at the same time. They looked like a family…a family that I wasn’t a part of…and it hurt.”

It was quiet for a few minutes as Lex gazed at me. After he didn’t say anything for several minutes I started to feel a little awkward. Way to go Lana…alienate Lex also…I was about to break the silence in the room and Lex spoke.

“Do you love him?”

His question startled me. It was my turn to frown.

“What?”

“Are you in love with Clark?”

I felt my eyebrows scrunch up as I thought about his question. Was I in love with Clark…I mean we’ve been through a lot…and I do love him…but if I’m honest with myself I haven’t been in love with Clark for a while.

Yeah I went over there this morning because I was jealous of Chloe and I wanted to try to get back together with him, but the truth is Clark makes me feel safe and after everything I went through with Jason…I wanted something I didn’t have to work for…something that was a guarantee…

That’s what Clark was to me…my safety net…or at least he was…I shook myself out of my thoughts and met Lex’s stare. He sat unmoving waiting for my answer. I gave him a grin and he smirked.

“No, I’m not in love with Clark.”

He nodded.

“I didn’t think you were. Listen Lana…I know how much you and Clark have been through, but maybe Chloe is better suited for him. I have no doubt you will find someone that is to you what Chloe is to Clark…you’re an amazing young woman and any guy would be lucky to call you his.”

I grinned and I watched as Lex smiled. He always knows exactly what to say to make me feel better. There was a knock on the door and we turned in the direction of the noise. I watched as one of Lex’s security team poked his head in and spoke.

“I’m sorry to bother you Mr. Luthor, but there is a doctor here. He said you’re expecting him.”

I watched Lex nod quickly.

“Yes. Escort him to the library. We are all going to meet there before we leave for the secured facility.”

“Yes sir.”

The door shut behind him, I grasped my purse tighter in my hand and stood up. Lex followed my lead and sighed.

“Well I guess that’s my cue to take off.”

“You’re welcome to stay if you’d like. I’m sure Clark and Chloe would like the extra support.”

I shook my head. I don’t really think I’d be very supportive at this point…I need some time to get used to the idea of Clark and Chloe and I wasn’t going to be able to do that here.

“I actually have a few things to do, but I’m sure I’ll see you soon Lex.”

I turned to go and right as my hand reached out for the knob Lex’s voice called out.

“How about dinner in Metropolis tomorrow night. We can catch up.”

I turned and smiled.

“I’d like that.”

“I’ll send the car for you at 6.”

“I’ll be ready.”

He grinned as I made my way out of his study. Hmm dinner in Metropolis with Lex…that’s a new development and not at all bad…maybe things wouldn’t be so bad after all…

(Chloe POV)

Clark parked the truck and we sat there in Lex’s driveway for a minute or so before his voice broke the tension.

“You ready?”

I took a deep breath, nodded and gave Clark a nervous smile.

“Let’s get this show on the road.”

I got out, opened the back door and took Evan out as Clark gathered his bag. I started walking toward the door when I felt Clark’s hand on my lower back. He tilted his head down to my ear and spoke as we continued walking.

“Everything is going to be fine.”

I smiled and we made our way into the mansion. On our way to the study we ran into Lex. I saw him stop, smile and shake Clark’s hand.

“Hey Clark, Chloe, this must be Evan.”

He moved in my direction and spoke to Evan in a soft voice.

“Hello there Evan, I’m Lex.”

Evan moved his face into my shoulder and I gave Lex an apologetic look as I rubbed Evan’s back.

“Sorry Lex. He’s a little shy with new people.”

I lowered my voice a little and glanced at Evan while I spoke.

“Evan sweetie…Lex is a friend of ours…can you say ‘hi’?”

I watched his head turn toward Lex. He looked him over for a few seconds before pulling his hand out from underneath himself and waving to Lex.

“Hi.”

Lex grinned before glancing up at Clark and I. He motioned for us to follow him.

“I was just heading into the library. I thought we could all meet there before we head over to the facility. I’ve got the best doctors and my top researchers from Luthor Corp. here. I’m hoping they’ll be able to work together to figure out what’s going on with Evan.”

I followed slightly behind Lex and Clark as we headed in the direction of the library. I spoke softly to Evan as we walked behind them. Lex seems very animated. I could tell he was excited about helping us. This was a good idea…I’m glad Clark asked Lex for help. Yeah, sometimes Lex can be a little crazy and everyone has their secrets, but Clark really brings out he good in Lex.

When the door was opened for us and we walked in everyone stopped talking and faced us. I stopped moving and stayed close to Clark. He must have sensed my apprehension because he put an arm around me, smiled and pulled me forward.

I took another deep breath and stepped forward with Clark to greet everyone there. This was it…relax Chloe…Clark is right. Everything will be fine…they’re going to figure out a way to save Evan…I hope…

Fifteen Minutes Later

(Clark POV)

I stood next to Lex and watched as Chloe held onto Evan. He had two wires connected to his little chest by small suction cups. He looked scared and I felt horrible. One of the doctors inside the room filled a syringe with a clear fluid. He moved over to where Chloe was holding Evan. I watched Evan wince as the doctor injected his arm with the fluid.

I saw Chloe turn in my direction when Evan started to cry and she looked inconsolable. I cleared my throat and spoke to Lex in a worried tone.

“I hope we’re doing the right thing. I hate to think we’re putting him through all of this for nothing.”

I watched as the doctors asked Chloe to move off the table and I got worried.

“They aren’t going to ask her to leave the room are they? I get why I both of us couldn’t be in there, but Evan needs Chloe.”

Lex placed a hand on my shoulder and spoke in a calm voice.

“Don’t worry Clark. Chloe can stay, I’m sure they are just moving things around. Relax everything is going to be okay. We’ll figure this out.”

I nodded.

“He looks really scared.”

I saw Chloe take out her phone as stood right next to Evan smiling while they laid him down. My phone started to ring and I frowned at Lex before answering it.

“Hello…”

“It’s me…Clark he’s so scared. I don’t know how much longer I can watch them do this. He keeps calling out to me to pick him up and I feel awful.”

I could hear the frustration in Chloe’s voice at not being able to help him and I sighed. I could also hear Evan in the background calling for “mama”

“Do you want me to switch places with you Chlo?”

I saw her shake her head.

“No, no it’s okay. I don’t want him to think I left him…how much longer is this going to be do you know?”

I glanced at Lex and spoke softly.

“Do you know how much longer it’s going to take?”

“I’m not sure, but I’ll go over and check.”

He patted my arm before walking toward the doctor working the control panel. I looked at Chloe through the glass divider and gave her a strong smile.

“I’m sure it’ll be over soon. Lex has his top scientists trying to figure out what’s happening.”

“You’re right, I know. Oh, wait…they are taking the wires off. It looks like they might be done. I’ll bring him out in a little bit.”

Before I could say anything the call ended and I chuckled as I shut the phone and placed it back in my pocket. I watched Lex come back over with a look of wonder on his face.

“They’ve already come up with some intriguing discoveries about Evan.”

Worry crossed my face.

“Lex, is he gonna be all right?”

When he didn’t respond right away I got worried. Oh god…what if whatever it is…it can’t be fixed. Chloe and I spent all this time trying to be optimistic, but what if…no I can’t think like that.

“Tell me what’s happening…Lex- please…”

When he realized I was panicking slightly I saw his facial expression change as he tried to reassure me.

“Well, the results are only preliminary, but the data indicates that Evan’s body is storing energy like a battery charging.”

I frowned.

“Charging for what?”

He shrugged.

“The theory we’re working on is that once enough energy is stored, it’s expended to fuel a burst of rapid cell division.”

“That’s how he was able to go from a baby to a 2-year-old in one day.”

Lex nodded. I grunted.

“Is there any way to stop it?”

He nodded and I smiled with relief.

“My team believes a bone marrow transplant might slow the growth and bring his metabolism back to normal.”

Chloe chose that moment to come walking up to us as Evan reached out his hands and gave me a sad face.

“Daa…”

“Come here buddy…”

I took him from Chloe and he grabbed onto me tightly as he laid his head on my shoulder. I rubbed his back a little as Chloe spoke.

“Can we use my bone marrow? We’re willing to do anything to help.”

I noticed how she didn’t mention using mine…even in the middle of a crisis Chloe was trying to protect me. That gave me a warm feeling inside. I watched Lex shake his head.

“Well, it’s not that simple. His genetic makeup is highly unusual. For this to work, we’ll need an exact match with a living donor, which means a biological parent.”

I watched Chloe deflate and I grabbed her hand and squeezed it lightly before speaking.

“Well, we think his mother died when he was born. We’re still trying to find his father.”

Chloe’s voice was quiet when she spoke and it broke my heart.

“What’s going to happen to Evan if we can’t find his biological father?”

Lex looked at me and then at Chloe. His face held a solemn expression.

“I’m sorry, but without the bone marrow transplant any serum we make to off-set the effects of his meteor ability won’t work.”

I felt Chloe’s hand tighten on mine.

“Don’t worry…Chloe and I will find him. Can you get everything ready for the procedure?”

Lex looked a little skeptical and spoke in a hesitant voice.

“Clark…this is a big deal. It might take a while to find him and he might not even agree to…”

I cut him off. He’d do it…

“Lex, do you trust me?”

He was quiet for a second before speaking and I could see the honesty in his face.

“With my life.”

I nodded.

“I will find him and meet you here in the early evening. Can you watch out for Chloe and Evan until I get back?”

He gave me a small grin. I could tell he was happy I trusted him with the two people who are most important to me at the moment.

“Of course Clark. I’ll take them back to the mansion with me until I hear from you.”

“Thanks Lex.”

Evan had started falling asleep a while ago so I gently passed him off to Chloe who gave me a worried look.

“Clark…”

She hesitated before speaking again.

“Be careful.”

That wasn’t what she was going to say…I’d have to ask her about that later…

“Always. I’ll be back soon.”

I don’t know what possessed me to, but I leaned over, kissed her forehead, then rubbed Evan’s head softly before nodding to Lex, who had an amused look in his eye that told me we’d talk about this later, and I left.

I needed to find Evan’s father...I wouldn’t let anything happen to him…he meant to much to me and Chloe…I couldn’t let him down…and I couldn’t let Chloe down either.

A Few Hours Later

(Lex POV)

I closed my cell phone as I turned to face Chloe and Evan playing on the floor in the middle of my study. I shook my head. Somehow having a baby in the Luthor mansion wasn’t as odd as I thought it would be. From what I can tell, Clark was right; Chloe seems like a natural nurturer.

I cleared my throat and moved over to the couch as Chloe glanced up at me with a smile. She raised an eyebrow when I didn’t speak.

“Well, you going to tell me what happened? What did they say?”

I took a sip of my water.

“Everything should be ready to go within the next hour or so.”

She nodded as Evan tossed a stuffed animal at her face and she chuckled. I couldn’t help but smile. When Chloe looked up at me the smile on her face turned warmer and I could swear she had a glow of happiness about her if that was even possible.

Her voice came out soft and full of gratitude when she spoke.

“Lex, I can’t thank you enough for all the help you’ve given Clark and I with Evan. I don’t know what we would have done if you hadn’t agreed to help us.”

My smile widened. I wish Clark came to me more often then this. He’s my friend…the only person who believes I can be a better person…that I can avoid ending up like my father. That means something to me.

“Of course Chloe. I’m always telling Clark I’m here if he needs me. Hopefully after this he’ll take me up on the offer more often. I’m just sorry there wasn’t more that I could do to help. Have you guys decided what you’re going to do after this is taken care of?”

She gave me a confused look and spoke as she held Evans hands for him to stand up.

“What do you mean?”

“Well, if I remember my conversation with Clark correctly, I believe he said child services were going to pick-up Evan at some point. I can see how close you and Clark have gotten to him…is that going to be a problem?”

I watched her shrug slightly and look away from me. I watched her watching Evan and I got the feeling it already was a sore topic. Hmm I wonder if that’s something I could help with also. I mean sure Clark and Chloe were young, but they had to be the most responsible and resourceful teenagers I’ve ever met.

If anyone was capable of taking care of a baby I would have to say it’s them. I’m not sure Mr. and Mrs. Kent would see it that way though…it’s something I would have to look into. My thoughts were interrupted by something hitting my leg followed by Chloe’s laugh. I looked over in confusion and saw Evan clapping with a large grin on his face.

I glanced down and picked up the offending object that hit me. Is that a stuffed rabbit? I glanced up and Evan spoke loud and clear.

“Mine!”

Chloe shook her head in good humor.

“Did you throw your bunny at Uncle Lex?”

He nodded his head and reached for the rabbit.

“Yes…mine…mine…mine!”

A smile appeared on my face and I reached over and handed him the rabbit. Uncle Lex…wow…the worst part is…it wasn’t as distasteful to me as it sounded. No one has ever included me into their life like that…I heard Chloe’s phone ring and she reached over, grabbed it, and answered it.

I watched Evan banging his rabbit up and down while I listened to Chloe’s side of the conversation.

“Hey Clark. Did you…oh…okay, hold on let me ask.”

She stood up and covered the mouth piece to the phone as she spoke to me.

“Can I use your computer Lex?”

I nodded.

“Sure. It’s at my desk.”

She smiled.

“Thanks. Evan, play with Uncle Lex. I’ll be right back sweetie.”

She walked over to my desk and sat down. I glanced at Evan. He looked at Chloe then back at me as if he was debating whether or not he liked this situation. I saw his bottom lip starting to quiver and before he could cry I moved onto the floor and spoke in a calm voice.

“It’s alright. You don’t need to cry. You can see Chloe. She’s right there.”

I proceeded to point her out and he followed my finger then looked back at me and sniffed. I really hope he doesn’t start crying…I’m not equipped to deal with that kind of thing…the next thing I knew Evan was holding up a book to me.

“Book.”

I nodded.

“Yes, you’re correct. That is a book.”

He shoved it at me and raised an eyebrow.

“Would you like me to read this book Evan?”

He nodded his head, crawled over to me and climbed into my lap. I sat there flabbergasted. My arms were in the air by my side and I had no clue what to do. Never in all my time on this earth would I have pictured the scene before me…not only am I sitting on the floor, but there is a child on my lap…

“Book.”

A very insistent child at that. I opened the book slowly and I felt him relax against me. As I started to read I glanced up at Chloe who had just stopped typing furiously on my computer. She was looking directly at me with a large, what can only be called ‘sappy’, smile on her face.

I attempted to roll my eyes before I looked back down at the book and continued to read to Evan. It sounds silly, but I could see what Chloe and Clark saw in this little boy. It’s possible that one day, if I find the right woman of course, that I could see myself with a son just like this to carry on the Luthor name…

Three Hours Later

(Clark POV)

I grinned and shut my cell phone. I glanced to my right as I led Tanner, Evan’s biological father to my truck. The ride to Lex’s secure facility was quiet and to break the tension I spoke in a friendly voice.

“Listen Tanner…I’m sorry I yelled at you back there. I just…Evan really needs this operation. He won’t live without it. So I really appreciate you doing this.”

He nodded stiffly.

“Yeah…this doesn’t mean anything though. I’m too young to deal with all this. I didn’t sign up for this mess. I met the kid’s mom once two weeks ago. One thing led to another and then she shows up at my door step a week and a half later pregnant and ready to deliver…”

My voice hardened a little.

“He’s your son Tanner. Maybe you should step-up and take responsibility for him.”

I watched him shake his head wildly. His next words were practically yelled in my direction.

“If that’s why you brought me with you, then you can forget it. I’ll get out now. You said you needed me to save his life. Fine I can do that, but I don’t want any part of this kid’s life…”

I gripped the steering wheel as hard as I could without breaking it. This guy was a jerk. How could you not want to be apart of your own child’s life? I grunted and we drove silently the rest of the way to the facility.

When we finally got there two people from Lex’s security team met us outside and led us to the same place Chloe and I were earlier. When we got into the room I saw Lex talking to the doctor’s, Evan on a surgical table asleep, most likely from sedatives and Chloe standing to the side biting her nails.

I caught Lex’s eye, he smiled and made his way over to us.

“Clark, everything is ready. This must be Evan’s father. Hello, I’m Lex Luthor.”

I watched Tanner sneer at Lex.

“I know who you are. Let’s just get this over with. What do I have to do?”

Lex gave Tanner a once over and told him to follow him. As they walked off I made my way over to Chloe. I rubbed her back, which got her attention. She smiled.

“Hey, so the information helped?”

“It did. Thanks Chlo.”

She grinned.

“Anytime. Let’s just hope Lex doesn’t realize I broke about 10 different laws with his computer.”

I chuckled.

“I think just this once he’ll forgive you.”

“It’s possible.”

I motioned to the chairs and she followed me to them. I sat down and took a good look at Chloe for the first time that day. She looked exhausted, but happy. Thank god I was able to convince Tanner to come here…well I guess convince is too strong a word…maybe threaten would be better suited.

I nudged her lightly and she turned her head in my direction.

“Hmm.”

“I just wanted to say thank you. You didn’t have to stick around with everything, but you did. It means a lot to me…you helping out with Evan…”

She smiled and took my hand in hers.

“Clark there isn’t anywhere else I’d rather be. We found him together, I’d never to leave you guys to fend for yourselves.”

I laughed and nodded.

“Still, thanks Chlo.”

“That’s what friends are for.”

She turned back to face the surgical area, but for some reason I couldn’t take my eyes off of her. She was still holding my hand and I hoped she wouldn’t let go.

She’s amazing…I don’t know why I never saw it before. These past three days with Evan have been eye opening. Chloe has been my friend for years, but it wasn’t until after I told her my secret that I realized how loyal and protective she really was.

I shifted in my seat and frowned slightly. What was I doing? Now isn’t the time to be having warm and fuzzy feelings for my best friend…I don’t think there’s ever a good time for that actually…I needed to focus on Evan, what we were going to do once he was better and how we were going to explain this to child services.

I sighed and leaned back in the chair. Today has been a ridiculously long day…hopefully it would end soon and I’d be able to take Chloe and Evan home…

*****
(Lex POV)

I rubbed my eyes as I walked down the hallway in Belle Reve back to my car. That damn doctor did not have a good enough reason to call me down here at 2 a.m. Especially after the day I’ve had. I groaned. At least the day, as long as it was, was successful.

Clark and Chloe were finally home with Evan. The procedure went extremely well. From now on Evan would grow at a normal rate and the only draw back was that he had to inject himself with a serum once a month.

Compared to dying I think that’s a pretty good deal. I turned the corner and saw two security guards escorting three patients down the hall. As I passed them one slammed into me. I glared at him.

“Hey!”

The guard was about to say something when he glanced up and saw it was me.

“Sorry about that, Mr. Luthor.”

I nodded and then the patient spoke in a mocking tone.

“Yeah, my bad.”

I gave him a disgusted look before I continued my trek to the car. As I got further away from them, their voices fading, I heard them say.

“Oh, you're really good at making friends. Aren't you, Lee?”

Once I was outside, I got in my car and drove back to the mansion. Finally…this day couldn’t have been longer…when I get home I’ll be able to relax. I’ll take care of all my work tomorrow and then Lana and I are supposed to have dinner in Metropolis…

I grinned to myself. To be honest, I’ve always had a thing for Lana…maybe now that Clark is unofficially off the market and she has realized they are only friends…I’ll have a chance to show her there is someone else in the picture that she belongs with…

Oh yes…tomorrow night would definitely be interesting…

The Next Morning

(Chloe POV)

I walked down the hallway, opened the door to the Torch and tossed my bag on a chair. Ugh, I can’t believe it’s morning already and I’m up and at school. I groaned, plopped down on the couch and closed my eyes. Maybe I can get a quick nap before second period. Last night was hard.

Evan was fussy and a little out of it from the surgery. Thank god Mr. and Mrs. Kent were there to help us. I didn’t wind up getting home until after two in the morning. A chair scraping on the floor made me wince.

I squeezed my eyes closed tightly and spoke in what I felt was a very menacing voice.

“Whoever you are go away. I’m sleep deprived and I haven’t had my morning dose of coffee. Beware…”

I heard a soft chuckle and I opened my eyes. Lana sat there with a grin on her face. I pouted.

“That was my best scary person voice.”

“Sorry Chloe…I’ve heard scarier…”

I rolled my eyes.

“Of course you have.”

I sat up and yawned.

“So what brings you to my neck of the woods?”

She shrugged and relaxed back in the chair.

“Just thought I’d check in, see how you were doing, and see if Evan was alright.”

I nodded and smiled.

“Yeah, he’s doing good. Lex, his scientists, and doctors were able to figure out a cure. So, voila…Evan’s all better.”

She smiled and a sad look crossed her face for a second before going back to normal. Hmm I wonder what that was all about…

“That’s great Chloe. I’m really happy that Evan is okay. So…do you plan on hiding out in here all day?”

I chuckled. Can’t say I didn’t think about it.

“No…I’m going to get up and go to class…eventually.”

We laughed together as Clark walked into the room. He smiled at us and Lana was the first to say hello.

“Morning Clark.”

“Hey Lana.”

He glanced at me and I looked at the cup in his hand. I practically threw myself in his direction with my eyes wide.

“Is that coffee from The Talon?”

He grinned.

“It is.”

I licked my lips.

“Any chance it’s for me?”

His grin got wider and he shrugged nonchalantly.

“Anything is possible.”

I bounced on the balls of my feet in front of him for a couple of seconds as I spoke, which made Lana laugh.

“Gimmie, gimmie, gimmie. Come on Clark…”

I pouted and he rolled his eyes as he placed the coffee in my hands. I closed my eyes and moaned. Mmmm oh god…there is nothing in this world better then the first sip of coffee. When I opened my eyes again Clark and Lana were watching me with interest.

I glanced between them.

“What? You’ve never seen a person enjoy coffee before?”

Lana laughed before speaking.

“Not as much as you.”

Clark smiled.

“Too true.”

I heard the bell ring and Lana got up and grabbed her books.

“Those of us who actually have a first period have to go or we’re going to be late to class. Coming Clark?”

He nodded and started to follow Lana out before stopping and turning to face me.

“You coming by tonight?”

I nodded.

“Yup, I’ll follow you back to the farm after school.”

“Sounds good. See you later Chlo.”

I waved as they left and then sat back on the couch. After finishing my coffee I laid back and closed my eyes. That was nice of Clark to bring me coffee…He’s been really great lately. So great that some of those old non friendly feelings have been popping up again…

I sighed and tried to shake my thought off. I was just over thinking things because of sleep deprivation. I snuggled deeper into the couch and cleared my head of all Clark like thoughts…A little nap never hurt anyone…

(Clark POV)

I waited for Chloe by her locker. Since Lana was around this morning I kind of couldn’t tell Chloe I ran here this morning because I was running late to school. I watched her turn the corner and when she spotted me she smiled.

“Hey, I thought I was going to meet you by your truck.”

“You were, but I didn’t drive to school today. So, I was wondering, would you give me a ride back to the farm?”

She nodded as she put her books back in her locker.

“Sure Clark. Come on, I missed Evan today.”

I nodded. We were really going to have to talk about what we were going to tell child services. I didn’t want to give Evan up, but I doubt they’d let us keep him.

Once we got inside Chloe’s car and started off toward the farm I thought I’d broach the subject. I cleared my throat and spoke in a calm tone.

“I was thinking…maybe we should get our story straight for when child services comes to pick up Evan.”

She nodded, but I could tell by her body language it was the last thing she wanted to talk about.

“You’re right. We could just tell them the truth…when do you think they’ll come?”

I shrugged.

“I don’t know. My mom brought it up this morning so I’m going to assume soon.”

She nodded and we turned onto the road that lead us to the farm. We pulled up in front of the farm and Chloe parked. We sat there for a couple of minutes before she broke the silence.

“Let’s just enjoy the time we have with him and worry about it when we need to. How’s that sound?”

I smiled.

“It sounds perfect.”

We walked inside and I frowned. Where was everyone…

“Mom…dad…I’m home.”

I heard light foot steps as my mom made her way downstairs. She smiled at Chloe and me.

“Hey Clark, Chloe. How was your day? You’re home a little late.”

“Good. Sorry, Chloe had to meet with a teacher after school. Where’s Evan?”

She nodded and pointed toward the kitchen door.

“Last time I saw him he was with your father in the barn. I’m sure they’ll be coming in soon.”

I was about to say something else when the kitchen door opened and in came my dad with Evan in his arms. I watched Evan’s face light up when he saw me and Chloe.

“Maaaa….Daaaa!”

He wiggled around in my dad’s arms until he put him down. He toddled over to us and Chloe and I chuckled.

“Come here little guy.”

He made it all the way to me and grabbed onto my pant legs. I picked him up and moved over to the table where some of his toys were laid out. I could see Chloe smiling out of the corner of my eye.

“Would you like to help me get dinner ready Chloe?”

“Sure Mrs. Kent.”

“Martha please…”

She laughed and went over to help my mom. Lately with all the time Chloe and I were spending together…it really felt like we were part of a family. I love having her here…waking up with her around…taking care of Evan with her…

I shook my head. Great…again with the non friendly thoughts. I really needed to stop this…Evan knocked into me with a book and I chuckled.

“Okay buddy. Let’s read the book.”

And read I did…

(Chloe POV)

I reached into the bowl with two wooden spoons and tossed the salad as Mrs. Kent seasoned the roast. I glanced over and saw Clark sitting at the kitchen table with Evan on his lap reading him a book. I grinned. I can’t believe how big Evan is…

I was snapped out of my thoughts when I heard Clark’s voice. I raised an eyebrow.

“Hmm…what’d you say?”

I could see concern flitter across his face for a second before it disappeared and he smiled.

“I said Evan wants you to come over here and read with us.”

I smiled and brought the salad bowl with me over to the table. I sat next to them and Evan reached out his arms to me while he babbled in my direction. I laughed slightly and took him from Clark. I was playing with him when Mr. Kent came inside from working in the fields.

“Clark, I need your help with the tractor son.”

I glanced over as Clark got up and followed his dad outside. I stood and moved into the kitchen with Evan. Mrs. Kent smiled in our direction as she finished up dinner. She was getting the ice tea out of the fridge when she spoke to me in a light voice.

“So, things seem to be going well with Evan.”

I smiled and nodded.

“Yeah, he’s such a good baby…well not a baby anymore but thanks to Lex this is the last growth spurt he’ll be having for a while.”

I smiled and Mrs. Kent nodded. The next time she spoke her voice had an odd tone to it that I couldn’t quite place.

“Child services will probably have a place for him soon…”

She let her comment trail off and I felt my hands tighten on Evan of their own accord.

“Mmm hmmm”

She stopped what she was doing and turned in my direction with a concerned look on her face.

“Chloe, sweetheart…I think that it’s time we all sat down and discussed this situation. I think it’s wonderful how you and Clark have stepped up and taken care of Evan, but I don’t think you two have thought about the consequences of becoming so attached to him.”

I sighed. I knew this was coming. Mr. and Mrs. Kent have been dropping subtle hints for the past two days about becoming “attached” to Evan. I don’t see anything wrong with how Clark and I are with him…he needs someone to take care of him…there was a reason we found him…

“I know. I think I’m going to wash up for dinner. Can you watch him until I come back down?”

She had a frown on her face, but she nodded.

“Of course.”

I placed Evan in his play pen, handed him his blue blanket and waved in his direction with a smile before going upstairs to wash my hands. I walked into the bathroom, turned on the water, and as I was washing my hands I heard a loud crash and yelling from downstairs.

I stopped what I was doing and ripped open the door. I could feel my heart pounding in my chest as I took the stairs two at a time. I felt like I was moving in slow motion. I finally hit the last step and rounded the corner right as Clark and Mr. Kent were coming through the kitchen door.

I glanced by the stove and saw Mrs. Kent on the floor. I gasped and covered my mouth with my hand.

“Oh my god…”

We all moved over to make sure she was okay. Clark’s voice was semi-frantic when he spoke.

“Mom…mom can you hear me? Are you okay?”

I heard her groan slightly so I moved over to the freezer to grab some ice. I heard Mr. Kent talking while I wrapped the ice in a towel.

“Martha, what happened?”

I turned around and handed the towel to Clark who placed it by his mom’s head and waited for her to take it. Mr. Kent moved her so she was sitting on the kitchen stool. We stood around her waiting for her to tell us what happened.

“Two men…they had some kind of powers…they were yelling about something…they mentioned Clark…before I could hear anything else the third one hit me…”

She trailed off and Clark squeezed her arm slightly while Mr. Kent stood with his arm around her. I could see a frown on Clark’s face as he spoke.

“What did they want?”

“I don’t know…”

I glanced away from Mrs. Kent for a minute and my eye caught the playpen in the corner. My hand grasped onto the counter making my knuckles white and my mouth opened slightly. I could almost feel the color drain from my face. I felt a warm hand on my arm as Clark spoke in a concerned voice.

“Chloe…what’s wrong?”

I glanced up at Clark and spoke with a slight tremor in my voice.

“Clark…where’s Evan?”

Clark’s head whipped around and he walked over to the empty playpen. I moved over by him and I felt a breeze. When I looked up he was gone and then a few seconds later he was standing there again.

“He isn’t in the house anywhere. Mom the guys who were here…did you see them take Evan?”

She shook her head as I bent down and picked up his blanket. Oh god…they took Evan…
