Chapter 2
Chapter 1
September 2012
About One Year Earlier
The sun shone through the slightly open window directly onto the two figures lying peacefully asleep in their bed. As the woman stirred in her sleep, the man moved over and wrapped his arms tighter around her as he pulled her against his chest.
The relaxed expressions on their faces showed that these two particular people were blissfully unaware of what was going on at that very moment on the other side of Metropolis not far from their very apartment…something that would change the course of their lives forever…
(Chloe POV)
I felt the bed shift with the weight of something and I groaned. It can’t be morning already…I feel like I just got to sleep. All of a sudden the bed started bouncing up and down up and down…and I buried my head further into the pillow.
I felt a gust of wind and then heard soft giggles and a masculine voice saying “Shhhh” I smiled into my pillow as I listened to them talking softly back and forth.
“What are you doing son?”
I could hear the grin in his voice when he spoke.
“Waken you and mommy up…today….is my first day of big boy SCHOOL!!!”
I felt more bouncing as Clark tried to calm down the rambunctious five-year-old that is our son.
“Shhh you’re gonna wake up mommy…”
I could imagine him rolling his eyes as he spoke. He gets that from me…
“Duh dad…that’s kind of the plan.”
I heard Clark chuckle before he spoke.
“Let’s let mommy sleep. She had a long night last night…”
“What was she doing?”
I grinned into the pillow. Yeah my precious BDA…what was mommy doing…I heard him stutter a bit before speaking and I chuckled lightly into the pillow. I could feel his gaze on me as he spoke.
“She was working on a big story for work…you know how mommy always gets herself into trouble with those big stories…”
I kicked my foot out slightly into his leg and he grunted as Jonathan laughed.
“Yeah…I know…and then you have to come and save her…”
I rolled over on my back and glared at the two most important men in my life before speaking.
“Excuse me young man…since when are you on daddy’s side? I thought we had a rule in this house…did you forget what it was?”
He smiled and shook his head no and I raised an eyebrow. He opened his mouth to tell me one of our house rules.
“Daddy is a big boy with super powers and therefore he can fight his own battles and I should always side with you because you’re always right.”
I smiled, nodded and pushed myself into a sitting position. I glanced at Clark who was pouting.
“You know…I take offense to that statement. Just because I have super human abilities does not mean he always gets to side with you. Plus I’m not always wrong. What about the other day when I told you not to go investigating that Senator?”
I rolled my eyes and he made a tsking noise.
“No no…I do believe if I hadn’t gotten there you would have been permanently etched into the concrete in front of The Daily Planet…was I right then?”
I pffted and shrugged.
“That was one time…”
His eyes widened and he tilted his head to the side as he gave me a look of disbelief. I smirked and he shook his head. Jonathan must have decided that we weren’t paying enough attention to him because he bounced up and down a few more times before taking a big leap.
A loud crashing noise could be heard through the apartment as the dust settled. I sneezed and I could see Clark sitting next to me waving away the dust. He looked at me and sighed. I glanced at Jonathan and he hunkered down and gave me a sheepish smile.
“Sorry mommy…it was an accident…”
I glanced back at Clark who shrugged.
“Why don’t you go look for the clothes I picked out for your first day?”
He nodded and got off the bed. Before leaving he turned and spoke softly.
“Are you guys mad?”
I was about to speak but Clark got there first.
“No son…you just need to be a little more careful. It’s not your fault though, how about this weekend we go visit grandma in Smallville and we can work on trying to help you control those powers of yours…”
I saw Jonathans face light up and he nodded quickly before running off to go get dressed. I sighed and looked at Clark. He raised an eyebrow.
“What?”
“That’s the third bed this month…”
Clark chuckled as he got out of bed. He stood in front of the window in his black boxers and stretched. I couldn’t help appreciating the way his body moved…he’s a far cry from the farmboy I married at 20.
He turned and winked at me as he walked over to the dresser. I smiled. He spoke in an amused tone as he turned to me and leaned against the dresser with his arms folded across his chest.
“In all fairness the other two times Jonathan didn’t break the bed…and I apologized for that…twice…and if I remember correctly you weren’t complaining while you helped me break the bed…sooo….”
He trailed off and I made a face.
“Clark Kent…I did not help you break the bed…”
He raised an eyebrow and spoke with a mischievous glint in his eye.
“Oh no?”
“No…”
He nodded.
“I see…so I was pounding into the mattress then while it said harder Clark faster?”
My eyes widened a little and I glanced at the door to make sure Jonathan wasn’t around. I haven’t the faintest idea what has gotten into Clark this morning…but he isn’t usually so blunt…not that I didn’t like it…
“Funny…but it was you’re pounding as you so eloquently put it that broke the bed…I had nothing to do with that…you see…so you broke the bed not me…”
He grinned and I sat up further and fingered the blanket. He turned around and started rummaging through the dresser looking for some clean socks and what not. I cleared my throat and spoke lightly.
“You feeling ok this morning big boy?”
He turned slightly so I could see his face.
“Perfect.”
I nodded. I glanced at the calendar by the door. September 5…I can’t believe Jonathan is already in kindergarten…it seems like just yesterday he turned one…My mind drifted back to the day of his first birthday.
*Flashback*
August 18, 2008
I ran into the kitchen and started taking out the bottles of soda from the fridge when Clark came into the room.
“I got it Chlo.”
I felt a breeze and when I turned around Clark was gone. I rolled my eyes and looked out the window. There were picnic tables set up with balloons, soda, food, plates, cups and everything else that would have taken me at least a half hour to set up.
I opened the kitchen door and walked outside. Clark held his arms out and grinned. I leaned against the doorframe and laughed as I shook my head.
“What do you think?”
I smiled at him with love.
“It’s perfect…”
I blinked and he was in front of me pulling me into his arms as he spoke softly his eyes serious.
“I love you so much Chlo…I don’t know what I’d do without you…you mean…everything to me…you and Jonathan…you’re my world…”
I felt tears prick at my eyes as I kissed him. His grip tightened as he deepened the kiss. It’s been a year today since Lex killed me and tried to steel our son…I don’t think that is something anyone will ever forget or get over….
The moment was broken when a voice behind us spoke.
“Eww get your hands off my cousin Smallville…that’s gross…jeez don’t you two do anything else? You know if you don’t cut it out I’m going to wined up with another niece or nephew running around the farm.”
I chuckled as Clark groaned and placed his head between my shoulder and chin.
“Why is she always early? Doesn’t she have elsewhere to be? Did we have to invite her?”
I laughed even harder as Clark moved and faced Lois only to see that Oliver was with her. He smiled.
“Hey Oliver.”
Oliver smiled and met Clark half-way with his hand stretched out.
“Clark…how are you?”
“Good and yourself?”
He nodded.
“Good. So where is he?”
I smiled…
“He’s inside with his grandma…I’ll go get them.”
I left Clark outside with Lois and Oliver as I went in to get a few more things and tell Martha that people were starting to show up. I glanced out the kitchen window and watched them laughing. I smiled…it’s hard to believe everything we’ve overcome to get where we are now…
I don’t think I’ve ever seen Clark so relaxed…I was startled out of my thoughts when a hand touched me. I turned and Martha smiled at me while holding Jonathan to her hip.
“Why aren’t you out there sweetheart?”
I shrugged.
“I came in to get you and…I was just watching…he seems so happy…”
“He is…”
“So am I…I just can’t believe how lucky we are…to have friends and a family that care so much…it’s…just unbelievable…you know?”
I glanced at her and she nodded.
“Well…why don’t we go join in the fun and you can bask some more outside. It’s gorgeous out today…perfect for a party.”
I smiled as we walked onto the porch and down by the picnic tables that Clark set up. By the time we got out there Bart, A.C., Victor and Lionel were already sitting down and talking. Once we got on the grass Martha put Jonathan down.
He walked clumsily over to where Clark was talking with Bart. I heard him calling out.
“Da…DA…DAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA...”
Clark turned his head and grinned at Jonathan.
“Hey birthday boy…whatcha doin? Where’s mommy?”
He picked Jonathan up and glanced over at me.
“Come here Chlo…say hi to everyone…”
I started in his direction but before I could get any further Bart was in front of me smiling. He took my hand and kissed it.
“Hey there Chloelicious…how you been?
I grinned.
“Good Bart. You been staying out of trouble?”
“Absolutely…”
“Mmmm”
I said hello to A.C and Victor next and then we started the party. I glanced around at everyone and realized that for a kids birthday party…there weren’t actually any kids there…we’d have to rectify that for his next birthday.
I was watching Clark and Bart play a game with Jonathan when I felt a hand on my shoulder. I turned and saw Oliver standing next to me with a drink in his hand.
“Hey…”
I smiled and looked back toward Clark.
“Hey Ollie. How are you?”
“Good. And yourself? Is Clark treating you right?”
I grinned.
“Always.”
He nodded and then his voice got serious.
“You know…I don’t think Clark would appreciate finding out that you’re investigating LuthorCorp again…”
My body tensed and I turned my head slowly toward him.
“I…I don’t know what you’re talking about…I’m not looking into LurthorCorp Ollie.”
I looked away from him and folded my arms over my chest. I could see him shake his head out of the corner of my eye.
“Leave it alone Chloe…it’s been a year…he’s gone. I don’t know if Clark would be able to handle anything else happening to you.”
“Nothing is going to happen to me Oliver.”
He sighed.
“And if it does? Dammit Chloe you have a son…I know what it’s like to lose a parent when you’re just a child…let me tell you it isn’t pleasant. Just leave well enough alone. Let us handle LuthorCorp and 33.1”
I glared at him.
“And what…am I supposed to do? Sit around and do nothing?”
“No…your supposed to fight injustice in your own way…through your stories…through The Planet…you can’t keep throwing yourself into these situations especially when Clark knows nothing about it…you’re going to get yourself hurt…or worse.”
I let out a frustrated sigh.
“I’m not going to let them hurt my family…”
“They won’t. You have my word. I will keep an eye on it at all times.”
I nodded and that ended the conversation for now. He nudged me with his arm and smiled slightly.
“I just want to make sure you’re ok that’s all…have you been working on your powers?”
I shrugged.
“I’m having trouble using them. I’m not sure how to activate them. It kind of just comes and goes.”
“I think I have someone who can help with that.”
I glanced at him.
“Who?”
“A Doctor that works with all of us on our powers and health. He’s very trust worthy and good at what he does. He can help you learn how to use your powers.”
“Thanks Ollie…I’ll think about it…”
He nodded and moved off to join Clark and Bart on the grass with Jonathan. I could hear him squealing from where I stood. I smiled…they were all so good with him…I’m sure everything will work itself out…it always does…
*Present*
September 2012
(Clark POV)
I turned around from the dresser when Chloe didn’t answer me the second time I called her name. I saw her looking at the calendar but it looked as if she was looking threw it. I walked over and placed a hand on her shoulder.
She turned quickly and I felt a jolt go through my body as I flew back a few feet. Her eyes cleared and she shook her head lightly. I picked myself up and she moved over to help me.
“Clark are you ok? I’m so sorry baby…I was thinking and then…it’s just habit…forgive me?”
She gave me a sheepish smile and I chuckled.
“Always. It’s fine. What were you thinking about?”
She motioned to the door.
“Jonathan…and how quickly he’s grown up. It feels like only yesterday he just turned one.”
I nodded and rubbed her shoulder.
“I know. Can you believe he’s starting kindergarten today?”
She laughed.
“I know.”
I watched her move over to the closet flick on the light and walk inside. I followed her movements and leaned against the door frame. She was wearing a white satin nightgown that ended at her thighs. God…I think she’s even more gorgeous then she was when we first got married.
She let her hair grow longer. It was now past her shoulders and reached the top of her breasts. Chloe has always had curves but in the last five years she’s matured, lost weight in some places and gained some in others.
Womanhood looks amazing on her. Her voice snapped me out of my thoughts.
“What are you staring at Mr. Kent…”
I grinned.
“My beautiful wife…Mrs. Kent.”
She chuckled and tossed a suite at me.
“You’re going to be late for work if you don’t start getting ready big boy.”
I nodded and came into the closet. I moved to the back of my side pushed a button that was hidden behind the top of the shelves. A secret compartment opened up and I pulled out my suit. I put it on at super speed. I was pulling my slacks off the hanger when I felt eyes on me.
“What?”
I could hear amusement in her voice.
“Why Superman…to what do I owe the pleasure?”
I laughed and shook my head.
“Just doing my part to save the world Miss Sullivan…”
She winked as she flipped threw her business suits.
“Where the gray one today…you know I like the gray one.”
She smiled and pulled out the gray skirt suit. I smiled and walked out of the closet fully dressed. I called out from inside the room.
“Breakfast?”
“Bagel with cream cheese and do not forget my coffee…”
“Yeah, yeah.”
I moved out of the room and called out to Jonathan.
“Jonathan…son?”
He popped out right in front of me from the bathroom.
“Boo!”
I put my hands up in mock surrender.
“Ahhh…oh boy…you scared me buddy.”
He grinned up at me.
“I know. I’m hungry dad…what’s for breakfast?”
We walked into the kitchen together and I opened the double stainless steel doors to the refrigerator.
“How about eggs?”
He looked thoughtful for a moment before nodding.
“Eggs sound good…but only if they have cheese. I can’t have eggs without cheese.”
I smiled.
“Eggs and cheese it is.”
I took out the eggs, pan and all the other ingredients I’d need to make breakfast. As I walked by the coffee machine I flipped the switch to on and let it start brewing. I was cracking the eggs and the phone rang.
I moved over but before I could grab it Jonathan had his hands on it pushing the button.
“Hello, Kent residence.”
I saw a smile light up his face and his voice got excited.
“Hi Uncle Ollie! I’m good. How bout you?”
I smiled and turned back to the eggs. Jonathan loves Oliver…he knows all the guys and he likes them all…but for some reason his uncle Ollie is his favorite. Oliver has been so great over the years. I don’t know what Chloe and I would have done without him and even Lois.
I tuned back into Jonathans conversation with Oliver.
“No…mommy is getting dressed and dad is making me eggs with cheese. Yeah…umm I think so.”
“Does he want to talk to me?”
Jonathan shook his head.
“Yup…guess what today is Uncle Ollie…nope…nope…give up? It’s my first day of big boy school!”
I chuckled as I heard heels clicking on the floor. A minute later Chloe appeared dressed and ready to go. She scrunched her nose and grabbed a mug to fill up with coffee for me. She looked at Jonathan and then gave me an inquisitive look.
“Oliver…”
She nodded.
“Ok…hold on here’s mommy.”
He handed the phone to Chloe just as I placed the plate of eggs and cheese in front of him.
“Thanks dad.”
“Your welcome.”
I leaned against the counter and watched as Chloe went through her morning routine while holding the phone to her ear.
“What’s up Ollie?”
“Yeah I can do that. No I’m working today. How about I meet up with you tonight?”
She moved by me grabbed her travel mug, filled it up with coffee and then grabbed a plate. She stuck her tongue out at me before sitting down next to a giggling Jonathan.
“What does Lois think?”
I saw her frown as she spoke in a stern voice.
“Oliver…how could you not tell her? Yes I understand that…no…yes I know how she gets…but…no...She’s going to kill you if she finds out.”
I heard her sigh.
“Fine. Yeah call me later and I’ll be ready. Yup…ok I’ll tell him…ok great. Bye.”
She clicked off the phone and Jonathan nudged her with his knee as he moved the stool back and forth. She smiled at him and ruffled his hair.
“Uncle Ollie says good luck on your first day of Kindergarten and make sure you call him later to tell him all about it.”
I watched him grin and hop off the stool.
“I’m done! I’m gonna grab my book bag…”
And he ran off. I walked over and leaned on the counter. I raised an eyebrow and she rolled her eyes.
“The JL needs some help hacking into a computer in Beijing…Oliver wants to bring me into Star City so I can tap into the network from his main frame.”
I nodded.
“Chloe to the rescue…my wife is a Super Hero…that’s kinda hot…”
I smirked at her and she chuckled.
“Your one to talk…Have I told you lately how sexy you look flying around Metropolis?”
I shrugged nonchalantly.
“Maybe once or twice.”
I leaned over and kissed her. She wrapped her arms around my neck and deepened the kiss.
“Ewwwww mommy…dad…that’s gross stop!”
I could hear Chloe laugh as I chuckled.
“Why can’t I kiss daddy?”
I watched him scrunch up his face in an identical expression to Chloe when something disgusts her.
“Because it’s gross.”
She nodded.
“Gotcha. We ready to head out troops?”
I grabbed my keys and looked toward Jonathan who was bouncing around excitedly.
“Yup…we car pooling today?”
She nodded.
“Come on come on come on…”
I smiled and I followed them to the door. Before opening it I stopped Jonathan and Chloe looked at me funny. I bent down so I was at his level and I spoke in a serious voice.
“Remember Jonathan…when you’re at school you can’t talk about what dad and Uncle Oliver do…you know our second jobs.”
He nodded.
“I know I know…no Superman talk or Justice League…I know dad.”
“It’s very important that you remember though. If anyone finds out who we really are you and mommy will be in danger…and Aunt Lois and grandma…so it’s very important that you don’t mention your powers or mine got it?”
He nodded and put his small hand on my shoulder. His eyes were serious and his voice was quiet.
“Dad…I promise…I won’t ever say anything…not to anyone. I’m a big boy now…you can trust me.”
I smiled.
“I know.”
I stood up and Chloe smiled at me. She seemed a little misty eyed at what Jonathan had said but she brushed it off and opened the door.
“Alright buddy let’s get you to school…we can’t have you being late on your first day!”
He grinned and I watched him grab Chloe’s hand and as they walked down the hall to the elevator…I shook my head….How did I ever get so lucky…
Great Chapter; I missed it before. Good protograph of a day in Kent's life...Jonathan is so sweet with his parents. And Chloe and Clark are so happy together.
