July 2011
(Clark POV)

I glanced in the rearview mirror and caught a glimpse of Jonathan sleeping in his car seat. I smiled. Chloe and I were heading back to Smallville for the 4th of July. We thought it would be nice for Jonathan to spend some time with his grandma since we haven’t really had much time to make it back to Smallville recently.

With graduating from Met U….work at the Daily planet, the introduction of Superman into Metropolis, and Oliver and Lois’ wedding we’ve been swamped. I felt Chloe’s hand brush against mine and I glanced at her quickly before turning my eyes back to the road.

“Hmm?”

She shook her head.

“Nothing, you just looked lost in your thoughts.”

I smiled.

“I was just thinking about how nice this weekend is going to be. We haven’t been able to take a couple of days off in a while. I’m looking forward to it.”

I glanced at her again and saw a smirk slide onto her face. I raised a brow.

“What?”

She shrugged. I frowned and spoke again.

“Come on…what?”

She chuckled.

“Are you sure you’re not just excited because it’s the 4th of July and that means you get to BBQ and play with fireworks?”

I shifted in my seat self consciously and gave Chloe awkward laugh as I made a face.

“Of course not Chlo…I mean come on…we’re adults now…I gave up messing around with fireworks a long time ago.”

Which isn’t technically a lie…She glanced out the window but that didn’t hide her grin from me.

“Mmmhmm and what was that the other day when you were on the phone with Oliver? Do I remember something about and I quote ‘the coolest fireworks you’ve ever seen’ from some unknown country that the Justice League brought back with them after a mission?”

Sometimes I forget who I’m married too. I cleared my throat.

“It wasn’t the Justice League. It was Oliver. He found them, but they’re for all of us and is it really that bad? We’re all real careful and I’m sure Jonathan will love watching them.”

I heard her laugh again as she shook her head. She leaned over and placed a chaste kiss on my cheek.

“I wasn’t saying you guys can’t. I think it’s cute that you still enjoy the 4th of July so much, I just wanted you to admit you like goofing around with the boys.”

I shook my head and lifted my right arm over Chloe’s seat. We spent the rest of the drive in blissful silence. Less than thirty minutes later we arrived at the farm. As we parked, I glanced at the digital clock. It read 11:30. I shut the car off, took off my seatbelt, got out, and made my way around the back of the truck to grab Jonathan’s stuff.

Chloe got out, opened the back door and unbuckled Jonathan from his car seat. She started to walk toward the stairs leading to the house. I shut the doors and caught up with her so I could pull open the door since she was holding Jonathan.

We walked in and I called out.

“Mom, we’re here.”

I heard footsteps on the stairs and a couple of seconds later my mom appeared. I grinned as she ran toward us. I bent down and pulled her into a hug.

“Oh sweetheart it’s so good to see you.”

“It’s good to see you too mom.”

She pulled away from me slowly squeezing my arm lightly and moved over to Chloe. I took Jonathan from her slowly so he wouldn’t wake up and my mom hugged her tightly.

“Chloe sweetie, you look beautiful. You’re growing your hair out, it looks lovely.”

Chloe touched her hair lightly and blushed.

“Thanks Mrs. Kent.”

My mom shook her head, placed an arm around Chloe, and sighed.

“Chloe, you’ve been married to my son for the past six years. When are you going to start calling me Martha?”

They chuckled as they made their way into the kitchen. I swear, sometimes I think my mom likes Chloe more than she likes me. I walked through the living room and made my way up the stairs to lay Jonathan down in our old room. As soon as I placed him on the bed his eyes opened.

I froze and he looked around for a minute before looking at me. I watched him rub his eyes and I smiled. He sat up slowly and crinkled his nose. He gets that from Chloe.

“Daddy…we at granma’s?”

I nodded.

“We sure are buddy.”

I watched his face light up as he lifted his hands in my direction. I picked him up and we headed back downstairs.

“Where’s mommy?”

“She’s in the kitchen helping grandma.”

We got off the stairs and right as I was rounding the corner, the kitchen door opened and I groaned. Jonathan giggled at me. Standing in front of the open door was Lois with Oliver behind her.

“Hey everyone!”

I watched Chloe look up and a smile broke out on her face. She ran over to Lois and enveloped her in a hug. Oliver skirted around the girls and walked further into the room. My mom moved over and greeted him.

“Oliver, it’s nice to see you dear.”

She leaned up and gave him a hug, which he returned. He held up a bottle of wine.

“I brought you some wine.”

“Oh, you didn’t have to do that.”

He just smiled and she walked it over to the fridge. There was a screech in my arms as Jonathan wiggled around trying to get down.

“Uncle Ollie!!!”

I let Jonathan down and he ran to Oliver who hoisted him up on his shoulders. He chuckled.

“Hey there little man. How’s my favorite nephew doing?”

Jonathan giggled and hugged Oliver’s neck.

“Silly…I’m your only nephew…”

Oliver nodded.

“So…doesn’t mean you can’t be my favorite. Hey I got a surprise for you…wanna come out to the car with me and get it?”

I watched his small head bob enthusiastically. I laughed and Chloe gave Oliver a warm smile.

“You spoil him Ollie…”

He squeezed Chloe’s arm gently, leaned down, and gave her a kiss on the cheek as he spoke.

“What are uncles for?”

He walked out with Jonathan babbling about sparkly lights and I just shook my head. Oliver is amazing with Jonathan. I don’t think there is anyone I trust more in the world with my son then Oliver. About a year ago, Chloe and I made living wills.

I know it sounds morbid and crazy for two twenty-four year olds to make living wills, but well…when you’re in the business we’re in…it’s a necessity…especially if we don’t want legal problems in the end…Chloe and I had Oliver and Lois come in to sign official paperwork saying that if anything happened to us they’d raise Jonathan.

I had never seen Oliver so speechless or emotional. When all the paperwork was signed he pulled me over and told me how much it meant to him that I trusted him with the most important thing in my life. He said he’d always be there for Jonathan…and he’d be the best uncle my kid would ever have.

It’s a promise he has never broken and I don’t think he ever will. Lois startled me out of my thoughts when she punched me lightly in the arm. I slowly turned in her direction with a playful glare. She grinned.

“Hey there, Smallville.”

“Hi Lois.”

I bent down and we hugged briefly. Lois and I have moved past the stage of disliking each other and now our banter is mostly just for show, although she does irritate me like no one else, she’s also family and it’s possible that I love her…not that I’d ever admit it.

“How’s Metropolis treating you? Are you going through withdrawals from the lack of cows?”

“Haha…very funny Lois. Metropolis is treating us well now that you’re finally gone. Have I mentioned how happy I am for you and Oliver and your new apartment all the way in in Star City?”

Chloe walked over and stood between us as she gave me a warning look.

“That’s enough you two. This is a vacation. You will both behave. Got it?”

Lois rolled her eyes, but smiled at Chloe.

“Anything for my favorite cuz.”

Suck up. Chloe turned to me and poked me in the chest. I rubbed it lightly.

“Oww.”

“Please that didn’t hurt Clark. You need to go out side and start firing up the grill.”

I frowned.

“But...”

She cut me off.

“Nope…no buts. Go and make sure the tables and everything are set up too.”

There was no use arguing with her when she got like this. I sighed and made my way outside to set up and fire up the grill.

(Chloe POV)

I watched Clark make is way outside and I chuckled. He’s such a baby. I made my way back over to Martha and got back to cutting up the tomatoes for the salad. Lois took a seat at the counter in front of us and started working the chop meat into burgers.

“So Lo’ tell me all about Star City and the new place…I’m sorry Clark and I haven’t gotten a chance to come out to visit.”

She shrugged and gave me a wicked grin.

“Oh no worries…you guys not visiting yet just gives Oliver and I time to…do other things.”

I slapped her lightly with the dish towel that was next to me and she titled her body back and chuckled.

“You’re horrible.”

We were laughing when Martha came over with a warm look on her face. She placed a hand on my arm and Lois’ arm as she spoke.

“It’s so nice to have this house filled with laughter again. Smallville is definitely lacking the presence of it's three favorite crime fighters.”

Lois and I laughed and got back to preparing dinner.

“So…Martha how’s everything going with the senate seat?”

“Things are going well. Lionel is helping me with getting things ready to pursue a U.S. senate seat.”

Lois smiled and gave Martha a proud look before speaking.

“That’s really great Mrs. Kent. We’re so proud of you.”

We spent the next thirty minutes getting everything ready to bring out to the grill. As I was walking out to let Clark know we were ready to start grilling I heard several voice talking and laughing. I made my way onto the porch and watched as Clark, Oliver, Victor and A.C. played a game of touch football.

I shook my head and grinned. Saving the world by day acting like a bunch of kids by night…those are my boys…I smiled. Bart was sitting with Jonathan and Lionel at the table watching the game. I saw Jonathan point and yell when A.C. tackled Oliver.

I watched the last of the game which had Oliver and Clark grinning like a bunch of idiots. I shook my head and waved at Clark.

“Hey there big boy.”

I blinked and he was in front of me with his arms wrapped around my waist. I placed my hands on his arms as he leaned down and gave me a light kiss.

“Yes Mrs. Kent.”

I slapped his chest lightly.

“We’re ready to start grilling. Get your chef hat on.”

He saluted me.

“Ey ey captain.”

I called out to the guys as they made there way over to say hello.

“Alright boys…we need some big strong men to bring out the food and drinks…get on it.”

They passed me I got a hug from A.C. and Victor, a kiss on the hand from Bart, and a wink from Oliver as they made there way into the kitchen. I shook my head in amusement as I turned back around and saw Lionel carrying Jonathan over to me.

“Hello Chloe, how are you?”

I smiled.

“Hey Lionel, I’m doing good, and yourself?”

“Quite well, I can't complain.”

I nodded and watched as Jonathan fiddled around in Lionel’s pocket.

“Jonathan get your hands out of Lionel’s pockets. You know that isn’t polite.”

He dropped his head and pouted. Lionel laughed and gave me a small smile.

“It’s fine Chloe, he’s just a curious lad, aren’t you Jonathan?”

“Sure…I can be curious…what’s curious?”

Lionel reached into his pocket and pulled out a lollipop. Jonathan eyes widened as he grabbed for it.

“Thanks! You’re the bestest Lionel”

He put Jonathan down and we made our way inside behind him. I leaned against the kitchen table and watched as everyone ran around doing something. It was nice to know that some things never change. These past few months have been difficult for Clark and I.

We haven’t had much time to spend with our friends or family and we’ve both been working a lot, especially with Metropolis’ newest hero. I sighed. It was days like today though that made all the hard work and stress worthwhile.

Clark is always so relaxed when we come back to the farm and being around people who know who he really is and accept him helps the relaxation process. It’s good to know that no matter what there are always people around we can count on.

It was around four o clock when all the food was done and we sat down to eat. Jonathan sat between Clark and I, and Martha and Lionel were at the head of the table. I’m convinced something is going on between the two of them. I told Clark about it, but he doesn’t believe me.

Personally I think he just doesn’t want to think about it because the fact that his mom might be moving on bothers him…
I was brought out of my thoughts by Martha.

“So Chloe I heard you recently got a promotion at the Planet. How’s that going?”

I nodded.

“It’s going great. I absolutely love not working in the basement anymore.”

She chuckled and nodded. I looked toward Lois.

“What about you Lo…how’s the job at the Star City Gazette?”

She nodded as she took a sip of ice tea.

“It’s going good. My editor’s a real hard ass, but I’m sure he’ll warm up to me soon enough.”

Clark snorted.

“Yeah…I’m sure he will.”

I kicked Clark lightly under the table and Oliver gave him a playful glare.

“Watch what you say about my wife Kent…”

Everyone chuckled as Clark rolled his eyes. I grinned. I love family holidays…

(Oliver POV)

I shut the water off, wiped my hands on the towel, and left the bathroom. I walked through the empty house and made my way through the kitchen door and onto the porch. I leaned against the railing as I watched everyone below me.

Lionel and Martha were talking quietly sitting at the lit up table as they watched Victor and A.C. playing a game of basketball. I glanced over at Clark and saw that he was holding a sparkler showing it to Jonathan very carefully. I smiled.

Jonathan is a great kid. I still can’t believe it’s been a little over three years since he was born. So many things have changed and yet, so many have stayed the same. I watched as Bart followed Chloe around and I chuckled to myself. He'll never get over her...

I caught a glimpse of light in the sky and I glanced up. A few loud booms could be heard in the distance and I smiled as Victor and A.C. stopped there game and made there way over to the front yard. I saw the guys gather together as Clark glanced around.

He looked up, saw me and grinned.

“We're gonna bring out the fireworks you brought over…you coming?”

I shook my head.

“Nah you guys go ahead…I’ll just watch.”

Clark frowned slightly.

“You sure?”

I nodded.

“Yeah, hurry it’s getting darker.”

He looked up and nodded as the four of them ran to start getting everything ready. Martha and Lionel walked over to Chloe and Jonathan and they lit up some more sparklers. I let out a content sigh as I felt warm hands wrap around me from behind.

I placed my hand over the one of hers and smiled.

“Hey baby.”

“Mr. Queen…”

My grin widened as she spoke again softly.

“What are you doing up here all by your lonesome?”

I shrugged.

“Taking everything in. God can you believe it’s been a little over three years?”

I turned so I was facing her and wrapped her in my arms. She took her hands and placed them around my neck as she spoke.

“I know. So much has happened…it’s been…an adventure…”

I titled my head to the side.

“Too much of an adventure?”

She smirked.

“Never…you know me…I love a good adventure.”

I nodded and hesitated before speaking.

“I think…I might have an idea for our next adventure…”

“Oh yeah…care to share?”

I tightened my hold on her and caught her eyes as I spoke softly.

“I was thinking maybe…if you wanted…our next adventure could be expanding our new family…”

I trailed off and I saw moisture gather in her eyes and she cupped my cheek.

“You…you want to have a baby?”

I shrugged looking down sheepishly as I spoke.

“I don’t’ know…I thought we could possibly try if you’re up for it…I mean if you’re not that’s fine. It’s not a big…”

She cut me off my pulling my face up a giving me a long kiss. When our mouths broke apart I leaned my forehead against hers. She smiled.

“I think trying can definitely be a good adventure…besides I’m sure Jonathan could use someone in the family around his age…”

I cupped her cheek and gave her another kiss. I heard the popping of fireworks in the background as I spoke.

“I love you Lo…”

“I love you to Ollie…”

I turned us around so we were facing in the direction of the lights that were being set off. I have my company…my friends…a purpose…and my family…life doesn’t get much better then this…

(Clark POV)

I watched as Jonathan jumped around the grass watching the massive lights explode in the sky in front of us. Bart was running as fast as he could lighting them as far away as possible so no one got hurt. I grinned as I felt Chloe come up next to me.

I put an arm around her and she cuddled against me. There was an especially loud bang and Jonathan ran toward my mom and Lionel yelling for them to look. Chloe and I glanced up and the sky as it exploded with reds, oranges and blues.

I turned to her and she smiled up at me as I pulled her into my arms. She wrapped her arms around my neck.

“So…is it everything you expected it to be?”

I smiled and brushed a hand against her cheek as I gazed into her eyes.

“It’s more…”

Her eyes softened as her head tilted to the side and she spoke in a soft voice.

“How did I get so lucky?”

I smiled.

“You loved me…”

She leaned up and I captured her lips with mine. I deepened the kiss and Chloe groaned slightly. When I pulled away she took in a deep breath and leaned against me as we watched Jonathan enjoy the light show with my mom and Lionel.

It’s been six years and kissing Chloe has only gotten better with time…there isn’t anything in the world I love more than my wife and son…when I’m with Chloe…I feel like I can do anything…I touch her…and it’s like touching her for the first time…it’s magical…I grinned…Like fireworks…

  4. I must apologize for my earlier comment. :o This story was similar to an Independence Day story with Clark and Chloe that I had read a year or so ago on a different website. I just presumed this was the same story, now uploaded here. Again, my sincere apologies!!
