Chapter 1
Metropolis
(Chloe POV)

My foot tapped lightly against the elevator floor as I waited for it to come to a stop. A minute later it jerked to a stand still, the door opened, and I walked into the penthouse apartment. I made my way through the darkness and flipped the light switch on as I walked toward the kitchen.

I glanced down at my watch. 7:45…I placed the bag of Chinese food on the counter and started unloading everything. I reached up to the cabinet, pulled out two dishes, and two cups. As I spooned the food onto the plates I heard the elevator chime and open.

Someone’s back from patrol early…hmm I wonder why…I turned my head in the direction of the heavy footsteps. Oliver made his way into the kitchen and leaned against the doorframe in his Green Arrow gear. I raised an eyebrow and his lips turned up at the corner.

“What are you smirking about over there Robin Hood?”

“The sexy blonde in my kitchen with dinner?”

I smiled and shook my head. Oliver is quite the sweet talker…or at least he likes to think he is. I turned back toward the food as he walked into the kitchen, came up behind me, wrapped his arms around my waist, and leaned down placing a kiss on my neck.

“Mmmm…I know that tone…what do you want?”

He sighed and I felt his warm breath against my neck.

“Clark called me today.”

I tensed. Wonderful…I’ve had a ridiculously long day for a Thursday…and all I wanted to do tonight was hang out with Oliver, eat some dinner, and watch a movie…I don’t want to fight, but unfortunately that’s what we do when Clark’s name is brought up.

I cleared my throat and focused all my attention on dividing the broccoli in garlic sauce over each plate of rice.

“Okay…that’s great.”

“Chloe…”

I moved out of his arms and over to the fridge. I pulled out two cans of soda and gave him a look.

“No, don’t Chloe me. Dammit Oliver!”

I slammed the cans down causing a loud noise to reverberate around the kitchen as I turned, leaned against the counter, and faced him. There was a look of understanding on his face and my body deflated slightly before I spoke.

“I don’t want to hear about Clark. You know that…as a matter of fact you’ve known that since he came back to Metropolis two months ago.”

“You’re right…I do know that, but maybe it’s time to give him another chance…”

He sighed, walked over to me and placed his hands on my arms.

“Chlo…he’s sorry for taking off like he did, he wants to be a part of the league.”

I looked up and met Oliver’s eyes.

“What did you say?”

“That I’d have to talk to the team and I’d get back to him.”

I nodded, took a deep breath and spoke softly, but in a firm tone.

“Eight months…he took off for eight months Ollie…just walked away and left us all here to fend for ourselves after everything that went down with Doomsday and Davis…I needed him and he just left…how am I supposed to just forget that and pretend it didn’t happen?”

He rubbed my arms lightly.

“Maybe you aren’t. Maybe you’re just supposed to start fresh…”

I pouted and Oliver leaned down and kissed my forehead before pulling me into his arms. My body relaxed into his as I wrapped my arms around his neck.

“Can we maybe put off this conversation for another day? It’s been a long day. I just want to have a nice relaxing night with my favorite superhero.”

He grinned and waggled his eyebrows.

“As you wish…”

He bowed playfully and I smiled. I reached out and tried to whack him lightly, but he evaded my hand as he walked in the direction of his bedroom. He called out over his shoulder.

“Just bring the food in the other room and pop the movie in while I get out of these clothes.”

I nodded as he disappeared into his room. I brought everything into the living room, slipped my heels off, and plopped down on the couch. I love Oliver’s apartment. You wouldn’t think it with all the running around he does, but his place is actually very homey.

I remember the first time he invited me over…it was about two weeks after Clark took off. I was hesitant at first because Oliver and I never really hung out outside of the missions we ran for the league. Well that didn’t last too long.

It turns out we have a lot in common…and before I knew it we were spending most of our free time together. Four months after Clark left Oliver and I started dating. We’ve been together ever since. Now that I think about it, we’re actually coming up to the six month mark in about two weeks.

It’s odd…being with Oliver…it’s nothing like I’d thought it would be. He’s a lot more down to earth then people realize. I was startled out of my thoughts by Oliver walking into the room in a white t-shirt and a pair of black sweats. I glanced up and he gave me a warm smile before sitting next to me and grabbing his plate.

“Thanks for bringing dinner over. I would have picked something up, but I wanted to grab a quick patrol before you got here.”

“I meant to ask you why you were back so early.”

He shoveled a couple of pieces of broccoli into his mouth before swallowing.

“I have someone covering the night shift so I can have the night off with you.”

He was watching the previews of the movie we rented as he spoke. I nudged him with my shoulder lightly as I grinned. He glanced in my direction and raised an eyebrow.

“You’re cute.”

He winked at me.

“Thank you.”

We finished eating in silence as we watched The Unborn. About a half hour later when everything was cleaned up, I was cuddled up to Oliver on the couch hiding my head in his chest every few minutes. He was stretched out and every so often when I’d jump he’d send a grin my way.

I could feel his hand stroking my hair that fell just bellow my shoulders. I’m letting it grow out…I sighed. Nights like these, where it’s just me and Oliver relaxing are rare and our lives are anything except normal, but I wouldn’t give it up for the world.

His lips traveling across my shoulder brought me out of my thoughts. He placed a kiss on my neck and I dropped my head to the side to give him better access. He gripped my waist and pulled me over and onto his lap. My skirt rode up slightly as my thighs settled on either side of his.

He leaned up and gave me a feather light kiss. I cupped his face and deepened it. His hands grazed over my shoulders, down my arms and then around my waist settling on my lower back. I moaned into his mouth and broke the kiss so I could take in a deep breath.

“God you’re beautiful Chlo…”

I smiled as he stroked my back.

“You’re not so bad yourself Mr. Queen.”

He grinned, reached up and brought my face down to his as I ran my hands over his chest, skillfully pulling his t-shirt up and over his head. I tossed it behind me and it landed in a heap on the ground. I felt Oliver’s hand come around and start to unbutton my shirt.

A minute later it was on the floor next to his. I bit my lip as his hand drifted up my back to the clasp on my bra. I shivered slightly at the touch. He leaned up kissed me and right as the clasp popped open his cell phone rang.

We froze and after a second when it was still ringing I groaned and pulled back from him. He sighed and his body fell against the couch. I sat on top of him holding the front of my bra so it wouldn’t fall off as he lifted his body up slightly and pulled the phone out of his pocket.

He flipped it open and cleared his voice before speaking.

“Yea…hey…”

I could hear a voice on the other end, but I couldn’t make it out. He squeezed my thigh lightly and I glanced up. He motioned for me to get up. I sighed, moved off his lap, picked his shirt up off the floor and turned away from him.

I pulled my bra off and pulled his shirt over my head. I turned back around to face him and he looked slightly irritated. He was shaking his head before speaking.

“No, I can’t tonight. Listen the team and I are having a meeting tomorrow, can’t you just stop by then? I’m busy right now. Just…yeah I’ll hold on a second.”

I picked my shirt and bra up off the floor and placed them on the back of the chair. I glanced at an envelope on the counter and frowned. My name was scrawled across the front in neat script. Definitely not Oliver’s handwriting.

I slid the zipper on my skirt down and wiggled until it fell to the floor. Oliver raised his eyebrow and smirked. I rolled my eyes and placed my skirt with my shirt on the chair. He covered the bottom of the phone and spoke in a low voice.

“You look hot in my shirt Chlo…I’ll be off the phone in a second and we'll pick this up where we left off...I’m sorry.”

I shook my head and waved him off as I picked up the envelope.

“It’s fine. Hey, what’s this?”

“Oh, that was outside when I got here. Maybe it’s an early birthday card?”

“Ah…and the cards start already…”

He chuckled.

“Well if I were you I’d prepare myself for Bart tomorrow…you know he likes to indulge the birthday girl.”

I laughed. There was a knock on the door and Oliver turned to it and swore.

“I told you I was busy Clark. Why can’t this wait until tomorrow? Fine…”

He slammed the phone shut and went to the door.

“Oliver…”

My voice trailed off…I wasn’t sure what to say…I’m not ready to see Clark and this definitely isn’t the way I want him to find out about Oliver and I…his hand was on the doorknob as he faced me.

“What do you want me to do? He’s already here…He’s going to find out about us eventually. I’d rather be honest then lie about it. I don’t want to have to walk around eggshells whenever he’s around. I won’t do that.”

I swallowed hard and nodded. My voice was low.

“I know. It’s unfair to ask you to do that.”

He nodded and opened the door. Clark bustled in and turned to face Oliver right away. He started talking quickly and I just stood behind him and watched.

“I was patrolling Suicide Slums and this thing, literally a thing, popped out of an ally way. I have no clue what it was, but it looked like some kind of monster. I fought it, but then it just disappeared into thin air…like…I don’t even know how to describe it.”

His hair was slightly longer than when he left, His body was bigger. Shoulders broader…and he held himself differently. With confidence and power…Clark Kent has always been handsome…but as he stood there something inside me snapped and I couldn’t take my eyes off of him.

My heart sped up and I saw Clark’s body tense and Oliver caught my eyes over Clark’s shoulder. He must have finally realized someone else was in the room…and that someone else was me…Clark turned his body slowly in my direction.

He gave me a once over, turned back toward Oliver with wide eyes, and then looked back at me. He opened and closed his mouth a few times before words finally made their way out.

“Chloe…”

I had to swallow a couple of times before my voice would actually come out.

“Clark…”

He took a step toward me and I took one back. He hesitated before speaking again.

“I called you when I got back…the number was disconnected…”

“I got a new phone.”

“Oh…I stopped by the Isis Foundation too…your secretary told me you were out…”

I nodded.

“Okay.”

The silence in the room was tense and I saw Oliver move forward and start to speak before Clark cut him off.

“Chloe…I’m so Sor…”

I cut him off.

“Don’t. Don’t apologize. I don’t want another Clark Kent apology. You did what you thought was right at the time.”

I took a deep breath and crossed my arms over my chest.

“Take a stand for yourself for once…don’t apologize because then that means you knew all along that it was wrong to leave for 8 months and abandon everyone who loves and cares about you…and if that’s the case…well then I don’t know why you came back…”

I saw him swallow hard and nod before turning back to Oliver.

“I just…I wanted to give you a heads up that there is something new out there. It’s pretty bad and it’s got powers we don’t know about…I see you’re…busy though. So I’ll let you two…get back to it…”

I could see the tension in his body as he spoke. Oliver nodded.

“Thanks. Since you’re here, before you go let me give you the rotation schedule we’ve been working on.”

Clark nodded, rubbed the back of his head and followed Oliver into the other room. I let out the breath I didn’t even realize I was holding and plopped down in the chair. I glanced down and it wasn’t until then that I remembered the envelope in my hand.

I slid my finger along the seal and the envelope broke open. I pulled out a white card. I frowned slightly at the front of it.

To My Darling Chloe

On Your 25th Birthday
May you Find Harmony in Life
Joy in Love
And Peace in Death

~Blessed Be~

I opened the card and confusion crossed my face. What is this? As I opened my mouth I read the lines out loud as Oliver’s clock chimed signifying that it was midnight.

In This Night and In This Hour,
I Call Upon The Sacred Power,
Bring My Powers To Me Now,
Give Me The Power
I Want The Power

I stood up and turned toward the window to see if it was open when I felt a slight breeze whip around me. Before I could move my body was propelled across the room and a bright light enveloped the whole living room. I closed my eyes and raised my hands over my head.

I could hear a scream and then yelling. Someone’s calling my name…The voice was frantic and I felt strong arms grab a hold of me and as I looked up past the person cradling me in their arms I saw the light fading and the last thing I remember before everything went black was the smiling face of a woman disappearing into the light…
