(Lois POV)

I shook my head as I slammed the house phone down, grabbed a bottle of water from the fridge, and walked back toward the living room. I opened my cell phone and hit redial as I handed Chloe the bottle of water. Dammit…the line is still busy…

I glanced down at Chloe with a worried look on my face as I tried to give her a reassuring smile.

“Don’t’ worry cuz, I’m sure they’re just in a dead zone…any minute they’re gonna call us back and everything is going to be fine.”

I saw her wince as she did her breathing techniques. Her face was pale and her hair was mused. She rubbed her stomach lightly as her head dropped back against the couch. She spoke through clenched teeth.

“I need Bart.”

“I know you do, I’m doing my best to get him here Chlo…Clark’s not answering his phone either…none of them are. Just hold on okay?”

She nodded. Okay…in all seriousness I’m not equipped for this kind of thing. Chloe is about eight months and two weeks pregnant…the guys are on a mission on some tropical death trap of an island, and Chloe just went into labor and there is no car here for me to get her to the hospital.

She’s freaking out…she keeps saying it’s too soon and I don’t blame her…the worst part is I can’t get a hold of Bart or any of the guys on the team. Oliver said it was a possibility that they’d be out of touch for a few hours and I said they shouldn’t all go.

But no, no one listens to me…Bart wanted to stay, but they needed his speed for a specific part of the plan and of course my cousin being my cousin told him to go and not worry about anything else…I sighed. Sometimes I really wish she was a little more selfish…

A sharp cry brought me out of my thoughts. I moved over to Chloe and knelt down in front of her.

“How are you doing cuz?”

She shook her head and I could see the pain on her face.

“Something’s wrong Lois…call an ambulance…”

I frowned and grabbed the phone. I dialed 911 and waited.

“Hello 911, what’s your emergency?”

My voice came out slightly frantic.

“My cousins in labor…she thinks something’s wrong with the baby.”

“Okay, we’ll send an ambulance, please state your address.”

I told her the address and hung up the phone. When I turned around my eyes widened, my hand released the phone, and it crashed to the floor breaking into several pieces. I could feel the color drain from my face. I grabbed the side of the chair to keep from falling.

“Oh god…”

I moved toward Chloe and saw a blood stain on her dress. I reached out and shook her gently.

“Chloe…can you hear me?”

Her eyes opened slowly.

“Lo’…I’m tired…something’s wrong…”

I nodded.

“The ambulance is on its way.”

Her eyes closed and I shook her semi-frantically.

“Chloe…CHLOE…”

When she didn’t answer me I stood up and took a few deep breaths and started to feel dizzy. Pull it together Lois…Chloe needs you…focus. I shook my head, took a deep breath and screamed as loud as I could.

“CLAAAAARKK!!!”

I just hope he can hear me…

(Clark POV)

I grinned at Oliver as he signaled for us to move in. I had just taken a step when my body froze. I tilted my head to the side and what I heard made my blood run cold.

“CLAAAAARKK!!!”

I’ve never heard Lois so terrified before. I was next to Oliver in seconds and he opened his mouth to say something, but I cut him off.

“Something’s wrong…its Lois…”

Oliver frowned.

“Go…we’ll hold down the fort here…”

I nodded and took off. I sped the whole way there praying everything was okay. It felt like it took forever to get there even though it probably only took about a minute or two. I burst through the door to headquarters and the sight in front of me made me queasy.

My voice came out in a whisper as I spoke.

“Lois…what happened?”

She was kneeling on the floor and when she turned in my direction I saw the tears on her cheek.

“The ambulance isn’t here yet…you need to get her to the hospital…she went into labor…but…something…something went wrong.”

I came over and assessed the situation before lifting Chloe gently in my arms. I glanced at Lois.

“I’m going to bring her to the hospital and then I’ll come back to get you.”

She shook her head.

“Don’t worry about me. I’ll wait for the ambulance and tell them you took her. After you drop her off you need to get Bart…”

I opened my mouth to protest, but she set her jaw and pointed.

“No, just go…Chloe needs a hospital now.”

I nodded and sped off. Things moved quickly once we got to the hospital. Chloe woke up, they hooked her up to a whole bunch of machines and I watched as doctors went in and out of her room. Finally I was told I could see her. I walked slowly into the room and knocked on the door.

“Hey…”

She gave me a weak smile.

“Hey Clark…thanks…for getting me here. I appreciate it.”

I moved so I was sitting next to her as I grabbed her hand.

“Of course.”

“Where’s Bart?”

I sighed.

“Everyone is still on the mission. I just came in to make sure you were okay so I could go see if I can pull him out for you and bring him home.”

She nodded.

“Where’s Lois?”

“She’ll be here soon. I’m going to run back, get her, and then get Bart…call me if you need me.”

“There taking me into surgery in twenty minutes….hurry Clark…”

I nodded, kissed her on the forehead and sped off. I just hoped I could get Bart here in time…

(Chloe POV)

I watched as Clark sped out of the room. I took a deep breath and leaned my head back. I hope he gets Bart here in time…I don’t think I can do this without him…a couple of minutes later Lois walked in the room slightly out of breath.

“Thank god you’re okay…”

I gave her a tight smile.

“Lo’…can you…call the doctor?”

She frowned, but nodded. She walked out and came back in a couple of minutes later with the doctor.

“Everything alright in here?”

I shook my head.

“I feel…”

A loud beeping cut off my words. The doctor made his way over to the screen and looked over the read out.

“The baby is in distress…we’re going to have to get you into surgery now.”

My eyes widened.

“Now? But…the father isn’t here yet.”

“I’m sorry, it’s important that we get the baby out now though.”

I watched as he left the room and heard him telling the nurses to prep me for surgery. Not even five minutes later people were scrambling around and moving me out of the room. The bed was wheeling down the hall and just as we turned to head into the ER, the elevator doors opened and there was Bart.

“BART!”

He moved over to me and walked with the bed. There was worry written all over his face as he leaned down and kissed me.

“I’m so sorry baby…the phones didn’t work…I’m never leaving again…are you okay?”

I laughed slightly, nodded and gave him a warm smile.

“I am now.”

One of the nurses stopped him and gave him a gown. He tossed it over his head and pulled it down as he grabbed my hand and walked with the moving bed. He grinned.

“It’s time…”

“It’s too soon…”

“It’ll be fine…trust me.”

“Always…”

*****

I sighed as I looked down at the small pink bundle in my arms. Lara Kari Allen…6lbs 5oz…she’s gorgeous. She’s got her father’s eyes and my nose. She’s perfect. It took Bart and I some time to come up with a good name for her…We wanted to give her a name with meaning…something she could be proud of one day.

Lara means shinning…and Kari means pure of heart. Two things I hope our daughter does and is…I felt a hand graze my arm and I turned to face Bart. He smiled.

“In case I haven’t mentioned it lately Cholelicious…I love you.”

I chuckled.

“I love you too…can you believe it? Can you believe her?”

“It’s surreal…I can’t believe we’re parents…”

“I know…”

He grinned.

“And to think we owe it all to Lois and Clark…”

“Oh god…don’t let Lois hear you say that. I’ll never hear the end of it.”

“So true…so…now that we’ve got ourselves a mini-me…maybe it’s time we take this relationship to the next level...”

He rubbed the back of his neck shyly and I raised an eyebrow.

“There’s another step after a baby?”

He let out a soft laugh.

“You know I just got that new apartment…it’s kinda big and slightly lonely…maybe you and Lara wanna come stay with the Bartman…what do ya say Chlo? Wanna move in with me?”

My eyes widened and I opened and closed my mouth. Tears prickled at the corner of my eyes.

“Really?”

“Really.”

“I’d like that…”

His voice lowered as he moved down to place a kiss on my lips.

“Me too…”

He sat next to me on the bed and started playing with Lara. I watched him with a smile on my face. Moving in with Bart is a big deal…but then again having a baby with him is a bigger deal…after everything with Jimmy I was resolved to take my relationship with Bart slow…

When I found out I was pregnant I was frantic…it wasn’t planned and I wasn’t sure how he’d take it…I was worried for nothing. Bart was thrilled…he wanted to get married and get a house and all the plans he was making sort of freaked me out…

I mean Jimmy…my husband…was only killed a little over two years ago and I was scared to make that kind of commitment again…so he waited…even though I know it killed him…and now as I sit here with our daughter in my arms…I couldn’t picture anywhere I’d rather be.

Or anywhere I’d rather live…it’s was definitely going to be journey…life is ever changing…it’s not one solid place…it’s like that saying…Life is a journey, not a destination…so I’ll journey with him…and wherever it takes me is where I’ll be…living life with no regrets…
