Oliver Queen was a lot of things, but a fool was not one of them. He considered himself well versed in people and quick on his feet when he got in trouble. It took a lot to get him to fall for any kind of scheme, but the blonde bombshell sitting less than fifteen feet away from him, had managed that and then some.

He watched as she sat outside the coffee shop reading the paper and sipping her coffee like she wasn’t responsible for the past few hellish days he’d had. Oliver wanted to be angry with her. He wanted to yell at her, ask her what gave her the right to play god with people’s lives.

But the truth was she saved him. Chloe Sullivan, the girl that they’d always thought of as their sidekick was now running the show. She was a full fledged hero these days. Holding down the fort and taking care of them instead of the other way around. And she was doing an amazing job; she brought him back into the fold didn’t she?

He walked toward the table and as he stood behind and slightly to the side of her, he placed the Queen from his chest set on the table in front of her and spoke.

“Nicely played.”

Oliver watched as she slowly lowered the coffee and glanced at the chess piece before looking up at him. Chloe didn’t react as he raised an eyebrow, moved around the table, and sat across from her.

She knew Oliver would figure it out eventually. He’s far from stupid; she just wasn’t exactly sure what kind of reaction to expect from him, so she stayed quiet as he continued speaking.

“I started asking myself who knew about Lex, about toy man, the things I’d given up…what I tried to do and then it all occurred to me. Dinah shattered the glass in the warehouse…Bart rescued me from the car, Victor faked the computers and Watchtower kept an eye on the whole thing…right?”

Oliver had that slightly arrogant smirk on his face that only seemed to increase his boyish good looks, which Chloe knew was used to disarm the people he was talking to so he could have the upper hand in the conversation. But that smirk didn’t work on her.

She leaned forward and her lips twitched at the corner before she spoke.

“You were living like you had a death wish Oliver. You had to face your demons if you were ever gonna make it out alive and I had to push you over the edge in order to pull you back.”
Chloe watched his head move back and forth as he considered her words. He pushed his arms on the table and leaned towards her with a crease in his brow.

“Did you have to push with a three-ton truck?”

Chloe had to hide her smirk as she moved in so their faces were even closer.

“I didn’t think a tricycle would be a big enough point. You’re a fighter Oliver.”

Oliver gave a warm smile at the belief and passion he heard in her voice. She believed in him…in all of them a lot more than she had reason to lately.

“You fought for yourself and for a second chance.”

Oliver gazed at Chloe and nodded. Her plan had worked like a charm. He wasn’t sure when she’d become so sneaky, but he liked it. There wasn’t anyone else in his life that would have gone through the things she must have to set up this little scenario.

And she knew him well enough to know that it would work. Sometimes he wondered why a woman like Chloe bothered with them. She was beautiful, talented, smart, and could probably be doing anything she wanted, and yet she chose this life for herself.

She walked their path without any super powers just like he did…they were two of a kind. He sighed and shook himself out of his thoughts. He needed to address what happened with Lois.

“Chloe, I’m not the only one you put at risk.”

Chloe’s face sobered and she nodded.

“If you’re worried about our little club and Lex…don’t be. I played my cards close to my chest.”

“And ah Lois was what? Just another ace up your sleeve?”

He raised an eyebrow and Chloe titled her head to the side.

“No…I never meant for her t get involved. She was chasing after you when she accidentally ended up storming the field. That’s when Victoria went off script.”

Chloe watched the look on Oliver’s face darker, but she could see the guilt clear in his eyes. His voice was low as he spoke.

“I could have killed her…”

Oliver watched as Chloe’s face clouded over for a second as she spoke.

“No offense to your manhood, but I made sure your gun was loaded with blanks just in case. I trust you Oliver…just…not that much.”
She brought the coffee up to her lips and Oliver laughed. Only Chloe could compliment and insult you in the same sentence. As he watched her swallow the coffee he realized, he loved that about her. No matter what she was almost honest with them.

She was constantly fighting to keep them on the right path…They owed a lot to Chloe Sullivan…she would do things that no one else was capable of in the name of truth and justice. Oliver raised an inquisitive eyebrow.

“Did Clark know about this?”

Chloe made a clucking sound with her tongue as she gave Oliver her best ‘you’ve got to be joking’ look.

“You can’t be serious…Clark would never in a million years risk what needed to be done.”

Their eyes met and it was in that moment that Oliver realized how much they were truly alike. Chloe didn’t shy away from the darkness, she used it to suit her purposes and he did the same thing. Neither one of them were in this fight because they couldn’t be normal.

They chose this life; they sacrificed things and people they loved.

“Well…he’s led a different life then we have…hasn’t he? I can’t expect him to know me like you do. The places that I had sunk to…the depths you must have had to go to bring me back…thank you.”

A smile broke out on her face. His words warmed her heart. Chloe had been afraid of what his reaction might be, but she should have known that he would understand. He always did. He always managed to understand where others didn’t…

“You proved it to yourself. Even with your face in the gutter you still had the hero in your heart.”

Oliver reached over and took Chloe’s hand. The minute his fingers brushed hers a jolt went through her body. She glanced down at their hands as his thumb stroked over it. She swallowed hard and looked back up. He caught her eyes with a look of seriousness on his face.

His voice was full of warmth when he spoke and she could see the emotion in his eyes.

“You saved my life Chloe…both the myth…and the man.”

She smiled and held eye contact with him for a few minutes before she cleared her throat and blinked.

“I should…probably get back. The Watchtower doesn’t watch itself…”

Chloe gently pulled her hand from his grasp and stood.

“I’ll see you later Oliver.”

She turned and started too walked away when Oliver shot out of his seat.

“Wait…”

She stopped and turned with a raised eyebrow.

“Did you eat?”

Confusion crossed her face.

“Huh?”

He motioned to her coffee.

“I see coffee, but no food…”

Chloe smiled.

“Not yet.”

“Lunch…my treat?”

She watched him for a couple of seconds before nodding.

“Lunch sounds…good. Can we get it to go?”

Oliver chuckled and fell in step beside Chloe as they started to walk away from the coffee shop. He dropped a friendly arm around her shoulder and he couldn’t help, but notice how perfectly she fit there.

“Sure thing sidekick…wouldn’t want Metropolis to go too long without its Watchtower…”
