Previous Story: Unexpected Feelings

Chloe sat in the hospital chair, hand clasped tightly around Oliver’s. Emil had been in and out for the past two hours checking his stats and making sure she was okay. It had been two days since Clark left to confront Zod about Checkmates headquarters only to discover that Zod had given his people powers.

Everything was falling apart and crashing down around them. The future they’d tried so hard to prevent was well on its way to coming to pass and now this. She stared at his unconscious form and something tugged at her heart. She could have lost him.

She took a shaky breath and her grip on his hand tightened as she leaned as close to the bed as she could get.

“Ollie…you’ve gotta wake up. You’ve gotta be okay do you hear me? I know this is a bad time to do this, but Ollie…I need you.”

She paused and she could hear the sound of her own voice as she spoke and it sounded weak…broken, two things she hated feeling. Tears pooled in her eyes as she continued.

“I was scared okay? I thought if I told you how I felt…if you knew how much you meant to me, that it would be that much harder if something happened to one of us or…if you left, but I was wrong. I was so wrong.”

She leaned her forehead against the hand she held as a few tears broke loose. He needed to be okay, she couldn’t do this without him. She sniffled and pulled her head up before frowning and then glaring at his prone form. Her jaw tightened voice hard as she spoke.

Oliver Queen wake up right now damn it. I know you’re stubborn, but trust me I think I beat you in that area. So open your eyes and get up because your family needs you Oliver. Do you hear me?”

She leaned in by his ear and spoke slightly above a whisper, voice strong and filled with emotion.

“Your family needs you.”

When nothing happened she let out a heavy breath and plopped back down in the chair. What would she do if he didn’t wake up? How would she get through this alone? She hadn’t realized how completely Oliver had been immersed into her life until now.

He was in every corner, every crevice. He knew as much about her as she knew about herself. She’d never been so honest with one person before. She’d never let someone in as deep as she let him without even meaning to.

She used her free hand to cover her face as quiet sobs wracked her body. She was tired of fighting the tears, tired of being the strong one, tired of trying to keep him out. Tess had been right. She’d built walls to keep Oliver at bay even though she knew how much he cared.

Fear. That’s what it came down to. After everything she’d been through she was terrified to let anyone else in. When Tess broke into Watchtower and they got locked in, their fight was short lived. After she knocked Chloe down and was getting ready for another blow she’d told her.

She told Tess she was pregnant and that had stopped her in her tracks. She froze eyes wide and disbelieving. Oliver hadn’t wanted her to know, but at the time it seemed like the only option that would get her to back off and it had worked.

A light movement against her hand caught her attention. She lifted her head slowly and watched him closely. She frowned when nothing happened. She must have been imagining it at least that’s what she thought until she felt it again.

He heard her voice. She sounded upset and he wasn't sure why. She’d called them a family, said his family needed him. It took a few minutes before he was able to pry his eyes open and when he did a bright light invaded his vision making him close them again.

The sound of steady beeping and the sharp pain in his chest as he shifted brought him back to reality. Zod. He had broken into the manor to get information from Tess’s computers and had run into Zod. He remembered bits and pieces of conversation before now, but he heard every word she’d said clearly.

“Way to kick a guy when he’s down Sidekick.”

His throat hurt and his voice was low and raspy. She gasped and practically flew out of the chair a smile on her face, tears on her cheeks.

“Ollie?”

“The one and only.”

He hissed and she placed a hand against his arm as she reached for some water.

“Hey stop moving, you’re gonna pull something. Just stay still and I’ll call for Emil. Thank god you’re awake.”

He took a sip of the water she held to his lips and before he could say anything else she was out of the room yelling for Emil. Two hours and a dozen tests later he was half sitting up half lying down in bed, a large bandage across his chest.

Chloe had gone to call Lois and let her know Oliver was okay. He didn’t know what story she spun her cousin, but he was grateful that she’d thought to take care of everything. He glanced over at Emil reading the papers coming out of the machine and raised an eyebrow.

“Well…what’s the damage? Can I blow this popsicle joint and go home?”

Emil sighed and shook his head.

“I swear at the rate you and Chloe are going neither one of you are going to last another year. You’ve just had major surgery Oliver. You can’t leave yet. A couple of day’s maybe. How’s the pain, no stop, before you make some kind of joke or sarcastic comment…I want honesty you hear me?”

Oliver sighed the smile leaving his face.

“Pretty bad.”

“Scale of 1-10.”

He hesitated and glanced out of the door at Chloe on her phone before looking back at Emil.

“About a nine.”

He frowned and moved over to the IV in Oliver’s arm.

“You’re on morphine, I can increase the dosage, but fair warning you won’t be very lucid once I do.”

He nodded.

“Let’s not do it yet. I need to talk to Chloe. How bad are we talking here?”

Emil sighed.

“Severe tissue damage it’s a pretty bad burn. I’d say at least third degree. You were unconscious for two days; you had us a bit scared there. I don’t think Chloe left your side once.”

Oliver frowned.

“Was someone at least here taking care of her? Making sure she rested and ate. This kind of stress isn’t good for her.”

He was getting worked up and Emil placed a hand against his arm and pointed to the monitors that were beeping off the charts.

“And this kind of stress isn’t good for you right now. Relax. I was here and surprisingly so was Clark. He brought her coffee and food a few times and when she wouldn’t eat he lectured her and told her you’d never forgive her if something happened to her while you were here.”

Emil cleared his throat and gave Oliver a sympathetic look.

“There’s a lot you need to catch up on, but you’re not the only one who cares for her Oliver. Remember that. And you guys need to start taking things easy. Remember that you have a group of people who rely on and need both of you. You’re only human.”

Oliver swallowed hard and nodded as Chloe walked back into the room smile on her face. She turned to Emil and raised an eyebrow.

“Well doc what’s the prognosis. How’s my favorite leather clad hero?”

“Doing quite well considering. I’ll give you two a little bit of time before I send the nurses to increase the morphine drip.”

Chloe frowned but nodded as Emil left the room and she sat down next to him. He gave her half a smile and she returned it. The room was quiet and Oliver played with her hand as he broke the silence.

“So, now that I’m back what else does my family need?”

Her head jerked up and when their eyes met he could see water pooling in hers as she spoke in a soft voice.

“You heard me.”

“That I did.”

“I thought I lost you.”

“I’m right here.”

She nodded.

“Ollie…”

“Hmm.”

“I think I mean…well…”

She let out a frustrated sigh and wiped the tears from her eyes. The hormones really weren’t helping the emotional rollercoaster she was currently on and it was driving her nuts.

“Sorry what I’m trying to say is I think I’m falling for you. I don’t know when it happened, but somewhere down the line…it was just more.”

He nodded eyes slightly red-rimmed.

“Well thank god for that. I’d hate to be the only one in this relationship with feelings. That might be kind of awkward.”

She chuckled lightly and he watched her face sober. He could see the worry on it and she let out a slight groan.

“I’m sorry to cut the moment short, but there’s so much going on I need to tell you about.”

He nodded and squeezed her hand briefly.

“Work first, play later. I get it. Shoot.”

She took a deep breath.

“The Watchtower is out of commission. Tess broke in and initiated the lock down sequence with us both trapped inside. Checkmate placed some kind of hacking device inside of her body that hacked into the whole data base. We had to pull the cooling system out to break out of the tower and the hard drive melted. Everything’s gone.”

He could see the pain on her face as she spoke and he pursed his lips together.

“I’m so sorry Chloe. How’d she figure it out?”

She hesitated.

“That’s actually not that important.”

“Chloe...”

“She’s knows I’m pregnant.”

Oliver’s eyes widened.

“How?”

“I told her. She came at me with a gun and when I got it away from her she hit me. I got a few blows in, but when I hit the floor…Ollie I wasn’t willing to risk it. When I told her she stopped and we worked together to get out.”

He reached up and winced as he ran a hand over his face.

“How much does she know?”

“Everything.”

He closed his eyes for a minute and took a few deep breaths before opening them. The look on Chloe’s face said she wasn't done and he tilted his head to the side before he spoke.

“There’s more...”

“Yes.”

He let out a humorless chuckle.

“How much worse could it get?”

The look on her face said a lot worse. She stood up and paced back and forth a few times before stopping in front of him.

“The team is on their way back. They should be here by the beginning of next week. The Kandorians have powers Oliver…all of them. Zod destroyed the Castle. He’s declared war.”

He leaned back against the pillow, jaw clenched. They’d done everything in their power to stop this from happening and they’d failed. She sat back down next to him and took his hand in hers. He shifted his head so he was looking at her and she gave him a tight smile.

“It’s gonna be okay Ollie. They haven’t won yet.”

“I know. We might have failed in stopping them from getting their powers, but this was just round one. We lost the battle…but we’ll win the war because I’m not letting our kid be brought into a world where Zod rules.”

She smiled at him.

“Me either. I sent a message out to Courtney in the JSA. I think it’s time our two teams unit.”

Oliver grinned.

“What would we do without you Sidekick?”

Chloe smiled.

“Crash and burn.”

“Ain’t that the truth.”

She leaned in and placed a soft kiss on his lips right as the nurse made her way into the room. She smiled at them and walked over to the IV dispenser and started fiddling with the dials. He cleared his throat and scrunched up his face.

“Do me a favor Chloe, call my office and tell Miranda to call my lawyer ask him to stop by here tomorrow.”

She nodded and he turned to the nurse.

“And can you please ask Dr. Hamilton to move an extra bed in the room?”

The nurse frowned.

“For what? I’m not sure the hospital will do that.”

“You see this woman right here? She’s pregnant and if she’s going to be spending another night here I’d prefer it be on a bed and not in a chair. Tell the hospital Oliver Queen is asking for it. I’m sure they’ll make an exception.”

She nodded.

“Yes sir.”

“Thank you.”

She smiled and left the room. Chloe rolled her eyes at him.

“I’m fine you know.”

“Yeah, yeah I know. Just do it for my piece of mind.”

His eyes started to drift closed and she kissed the top of his head. He smiled and mumbled something to her before promptly falling asleep. She chuckled to herself and sat beside him.

Aliens were attempting to overthrow the government and take over the world, Watchtower was destroyed, Tess knew their biggest secret and it was very possible that war would break out in the next few weeks and yet Chloe couldn’t care less at the moment.

She was happy. Oliver was okay, they’d finally admitted their feelings to each other, and they were a family and that’s all that mattered. For the moment everything else could wait.

  5. I love this series. I'm making my way through them...I know very little way of comments. I'll try I just get so caught up in them! I have one teensy weensy complaint...CHLOE should NOT be drinking coffee whatsoever. I get possibly maybe decaf, but there is a no coffee drinking rule while preggars. I know you can drink it very occasionally with no cause for concern, but I know this is a big thing with pregnancy. I don't drink it so they never had to worry with me with my daughter. I was told absolutely little to no soda. Soda was my coffee. Though not so much as I'm drinking diet or no soda now...but still. Wanted to point it out. Only think I had a pet peeve about. Absolutely brilliant though!

Hmm, I didn't think coffee was too big of a deal, my Mother drank it when she was pregnant with me...then again maybe that's why I'm addicted to it now! Haha

Thank you so much for the constructive feedback! You'll be happy to know that I do have another Baby series coming up, this one is more angsty...but there's no coffee drinking in that! :)

Thank you so much for talking the time to read and comment! :)
