Chloe bustled around the clock tower checking on incoming news feeds and putting the finishing touches on the identities she’d created for the Kandorians at Clark’s request. She wasn’t happy about it in the slightest, but she told Clark she’d give them a chance.

She glanced at her watch checking the time and her fingers tapped furiously at the computer keys. Oliver was going to be there in less than a half hour with lunch and her stomach was still feeling queasy. There was a heavy sigh behind her and she rolled her eyes as Emil spoke in a chiding tone.

“Chloe please, we’re in the middle of a physical, do you think you can sit down for two seconds so we can finish up here?”

She spun on her heel, grin on her face.

“Emil, I can see your little machine, it’s still processing information. Just let me finish this up real quick and I promise I’ll be you’re willing pin cushion in a minute.”

He made a face, but motioned for her to continue what she was doing before turning back towards the read out on his portable processor. She’d been the one to call him scheduling her physical earlier than planned. He’d been shocked, but carved time out of his schedule none the less.

Chloe had been sick for a while now and at first she assumed it was food poisoning, but here she was two weeks later still feeling sick every so often. With a final click the printer booted up and started printing out the paperwork. She’d have to go pick up the passports from her guy later.

She moved away from the mainframe and plopped down in the chair in front of Emil, reattaching the pressure cuff and waiting for him to finish what he was doing. He moved around getting her vitals while his machine printed out a paper.

He took off the cuff after recording her blood pressure and walked back to the machine grabbing the print out. He read it over and Chloe saw his body tense up. He shot a quick glanced her way and then looked back at the paper. She frowned.

“What’s wrong? What does it say?”

He cleared his throat turning around to face her as he spoke. She scrunched her eyes as he watched her reaction. Chloe stared at Emil, confusion on her face thinking she must have heard him wrong.

“I’m sorry what did you say?”

“You’re pregnant.”

She chuckled lightly shaking her head. There’s no way she could be pregnant, there must be something wrong with his machine.

“That’s impossible; you must have made a mistake.”

Emil frowned and looked down at the paper in his hands. He was definitely not wrong. It was time he broached a subject he really didn’t want to.

“You’re sexually active aren’t you?”

“Yeah, but…”

“And you realize condoms are only 97 percent affective?”

“Well yea, but…”

“And you’re not on the pill?”

“No, but…”

“How often did you say you have sex per week?”

Chloe glared at the Emil, pushing herself out of the chair and waling back toward the command center to check on the process of the documents.

“I didn’t and it’s none of your business.”

He sighed folding the paper. Every month he gave Chloe a full physical, like he did with everyone else on Oliver’s team, but this time she was avoiding him. Apparently something was going on and she didn’t want him to know about it. He turned following her until they were standing side by side.

“I didn’t even know you were seeing someone. Does the team know?”

She rolled her eyes. Did the team know, of course the team didn’t know. This thing between her and Oliver had only been going on for a few months and they agreed that they would take things a day at a time. No labels or strings, just some ordinary fun.

“I’m not in a relationship…not really anyway.”

She mumbled the last part to herself and he sighed. He wasn’t even sure if she was taking this seriously and it was serious. This wasn’t something that just affected her.

If she decided to keep the baby it would affect the whole dynamic of the team. It would be something they’d need to prepare and take precautions for.

“Are you going to tell them?”

She went to answer him as the double doors were pushing open, Oliver striding through grin on his face.

“Ready for lunch Sidekick?”

Her heartbeat picked up speed when she heard his voice. Chloe jerked her head in Oliver’s direction swallowing hard a hint of panic in her eyes. Oh god, she was going to have to tell him. What would he say? Would he freak out? Take off?

She wasn’t ready for this kind of responsibility. She was twenty-four years old. She couldn’t be a mother. Most days she barely had the time and energy to take care of herself let alone the team of superheroes she looked after. Add a baby to the mix and she’d have a massive meltdown.

Emil glanced between Oliver and Chloe eyes widening in realization.

“Huh…well I didn’t see that coming…”

Oliver frowned in his direction, eyebrow arched.

“Hey…everything okay?”

Emil opened his mouth, but Chloe cut him off before he could say anything. She gave Oliver a tight smile.

“Everything’s fine. Emil was just giving me my physical.”

“I thought it wasn’t scheduled until next week.”

Chloe made a face.

“I don’t even want to know why you know that.”

Oliver chuckled as he moved further into the room and put the takeout bags on her desk.

“Because Emil informs me when all team members have their physicals. It seems we have a group of people who have an aversion to doctors. No one likes to keep their appointment.”

She nodded.

“Well I wasn’t feeling well so I moved it up, but everything’s fine. It must have just been a bug. No worries.”

Oliver could see the tension in her shoulders and the disapproving look on Emil’s face. He knew she was hiding something, but in the past few months he had also come to learn that pushing her to share things before she was ready only made her that much more unwilling to share.

So he sucked it up, wiped the worry of his face, smiled, and nodded. She’d tell him when she was ready.

“Good to hear. Would you like to join us for lunch Emil?”

He shook his head as he packed up his bag.

“No, I have to be going. I have another appointment soon.”

He started to walk out the door when he stopped and turned to face Chloe.

“Give me a call in the morning and I’ll have you come into the office to pick up the rest of the…paperwork and stuff.”

She swallowed hard and nodded. Seconds later he was out the door and she felt strong arms wrapping themselves around her. She looked up at Oliver’s grinning face and tried to push the news she’d just found out aside as she smiled back.

He leaned down capturing her lips with his before pulling back slowly.

“Hey.”

“Hi…so what’d you bring for lunch?”

He placed a kiss on the side of her head before walking over to the desk Chloe trailing behind him. He motioned to the bag and she saw the name of her favorite Thai restaurant on it. They sat down as he set her meal down in front of her before passing her a spoon.

They sat there eating in companionable silence as Emil’s words drifted through her head again. You’re pregnant…how could she make that kind of colossal mistake? Why hadn’t she gone back on the pill when her and Oliver started this thing.

They always used protection…except for that first time. They hadn’t been expecting it and neither had though to stop it before it went too far. They had been too caught up in each other. But that was over four months ago, she would have known. It had to have happened after that, but when?

A warm hand on her knee startled her out of her thoughts. She glanced up, worry filling Oliver’s face as he spoke.

“You sure you’re okay Chloe?”

She nodded.

“Everything’s good…I promise.”

He held her eye before going back to his food. She knew he wasn’t stupid, but he also wouldn’t push her. She’d tell him…she just had to find the right time…
