Commitment. It was never something he thought much about. It was more like some kind of illusive idea that he had heard of, but never witnessed and therefore wasn’t completely convinced it even existed. Even at their best times his parents never had it.

He lived in a town where even the best families, the most respected ones didn’t have it. Everyone cheated. The husbands on wives, the wives on husbands. Boyfriends on girlfriends and girlfriends on boyfriends. It was like a never ending cycle.

It was what he grew up around…it was all he knew. And so whenever one of his girlfriends, and Ricky used that term loosely, asked him for a commitment he knew it was time to move on. It was something that every girl wanted from him, but none ever managed to get.

Until he met Amy Jeurgens. When he’d first found out she was pregnant, he did everything in his power to steer clear of the mess he created. And then he’d done everything he could to push her into making a decision she clearly hadn’t wanted to at the time.

He was only out for himself. Doing what was best for him until the day his son was born and then everything changed. His relationship with Amy had changed too. She was no longer the girl he knocked up, but the Mother of his son.

So when she came to him asking for a commitment after they decided to give a relationship a try it took him by surprise when he didn’t run in the other direction right away. Ricky had always been afraid of the word commitment and the connotations it brought with it, but with Amy he wanted to be that guy.

Fear of a name increases fear of the thing itself, and if he was scared of commitment before he was terrified of it now because he knew with Amy it was real. He knew if he wanted her he’d have to grab the illusive idea and make it a reality.

Commitment. It was never something Ricky Underwood thought much about, but now that he had, he thinks maybe giving in and owning his fear so he could be with the Mother of his son might just be worth the risk.

  1. I loved this. It fits Ricky so perfectly and for such a short piece, it really worked.
