Oliver stood over Chloe in the small confined space of the Daily Planet elevator. His eyebrows were furrowed with a look of worry gracing his features. He squatted down so he was facing her as she took a few deep breathes.

“Hehehe…phewwww…hehehe…phewwww”

“Chloe…are you okay?”

She nodded her head quickly, winced and bit her lower lip. Oliver kneeled on one knee and wiped some sweat off her face with his handkerchief.

“Maybe it’s time you called Clark.”

Chloe glanced up at Oliver and sent him a glare. There was irritation in her voice when she spoke.

“No, Oliver. I’m not calling for Clark until we’re done.”

A look of horror crossed his face as he gave her a once over.

“But Chloe…”

She cut him off with a growl.

“Oliver Jonas Queen you promised me an interview. I have a deadline. We are not leaving this elevator until you answer all my questions.”

The last part of her sentence came out in a groan as she let her head loll back and winced again. Oliver shook his head, took off his jacket, folded it and placed it under her head. Chloe wants an interview, so an interview is what she’ll get…

Twenty Minutes Earlier

Chloe made her way around her desk over to Clark’s desk to drop off some papers. Clark had left the Daily Planet early today because there was some kind of disaster in New York that Superman was needed for.

She glanced at her watch and sighed. Oliver must be running late, which unfortunately is not all that unusual. She just wished he’d get here soon so they could get the interview over with and she could head home. Sighing to herself, she walked slowly back over to her desk and held her lower back before she sat down.

As she reached into her drawer the ring on her finger gleamed in the office light. She glanced down at it and smiled. She still couldn’t believe that she was married to Clark Kent. After years of pinning for her best friend, two years ago, following his “I’m an alien and I need to cut myself off from human emotion” phase, he finally proposed.

Now here they were working side by side at the Daily Planet. Life doesn’t get much better than this. She was startled out of her thoughts by a hand on her shoulder. Chloe turned slightly, lifted her head up and came face to face with Oliver.

She stood slowly and he grinned at her.

“Hey Sidekick, how are you?”

He leaned down and she gave him a tight hug.

“I’m good. You’re late.”

He rolled his eyes and chuckled. He motioned to her protruding belly and spoke with a hint of amusement in his voice.

“Another week and you’ll be late too.”

She slapped him lightly and his hand reached out and rubbed her stomach. She smiled at him as she felt the baby kick.

“Whoa, Sidekick, you got a future soccer player in there.”

She laughed and motioned for him to take a seat. He did and she followed his lead.

“Why don’t we get down to business?”

He nodded.

“I hear that Queen Industries has developed some kind of Green Technology that will revolutionize the way people in Metropolis conserve energy. What can you tell me about this?”

Oliver leaned back in his seat and sat quietly for a minute before answering.

“Well Queen Industries has been working on this specific technology for the past year and we’ve finally found a way to make it work. We’ll be testing it out next week. Hopefully if all goes well we’ll be able to place one in every home, if people want them of course.”

She nodded and jotted down a few notes. Chloe continued to ask Oliver question after question and before long she could hear her stomach growling. When her stomach growled particularly loud and Oliver heard it she sighed.

Sometimes it was extremely difficult to be a reporter and almost nine months pregnant. Oliver’s lip turned up on one side.

“You hungry there Sidekick?”

“We’re in the middle of an interview Oliver, please attempt to be professional.”

“Why don’t we go to the coffee shop down the block and finish the interview there so I can get some food into your system. Clark would never forgive me if I starved my god child.”

Chloe sighed, but agreed. She gathered her notepad, a pen and her purse as Oliver lead her to the elevator. They got in and he pressed the button for the lobby. The doors slid shut and as it started to move there was a sharp jolt and the lights went off.

A couple of seconds later the emergency lights came on and Chloe and Oliver looked around in confusion. Oliver moved over to the emergency box, opened it and started looking around. Nothing but a few buttons and a phone.

“What’s going on?”

Oliver turned in Chloe’s direction and let out a frustrated sigh.

“The power must be out. I can’t get anything to work.”

“Did you try using the emergency phone…you know that’s why it’s there right? To let them know if people are stuck in here.”

He nodded.

“Good idea.”

Oliver picked up the phone and after going back and forth for a couple of minutes, was able to get in touch with security and let them know that there were people in the elevator. He turned back around and faced Chloe.

“Okay, there was a power outage. They know we’re in here and they’re going to get us out of here as soon as they can. Personally I think you should…”

A loud splashing noise cut off Oliver’s words. He frowned and looked around the elevator.

“What was that noise?”

Chloe’s eyes widened as her hand grasped her engorged belly.

“Oh my god…Oliver…my water just broke…”

Present Time

The pain that kept filtering across Chloe’s face was killing Oliver. She was lying on the floor with her head propped up with Oliver’s suit jacket while scribbling eagerly on a pad of paper she held in her hand. Oliver took his cell phone out of his pocket and opened it.

No reception.

“Chloe this is getting to the point of no return here. You have to call for Clark.”

She shook her head.

“Not yet, I’m not finished with my interview.”

Her teeth were grinding together as she spoke.

“Tell me, how much will these units cost consumers?”

“I’m not…”

She cut him off.

“Dammit Oliver how much?”

He was startled by the force in her voice and he swallowed hard.

“We’re hoping to make the units affordable for everyone. The base price will be somewhere between $50 to $80 and for those who cannot afford it, they can rent it for less, but at the moment I’m unsure of the pricing for that.”

She nodded and then clutched his hand as an overwhelming pain shot through her body. Sweat was starting to accumulate on her brow again and Oliver wasn’t quite sure what to do.

“Ugh…oh god…”

“Chloe…”

“Will this be…hehe phewww…Queen…hehe phewww…Industries only venture…hehe phewww…into Green Technology?”

He shook his head frantically.

“No, we plan on trying to do a lot more in the future to better our environment. Chloe please…call for Clark”

She grunted.

“Just one more…Ughhhhhhh ahhhhh.”

Oliver frantically moved over to her side and held her hand tightly while he whispered that everything was going to be okay. Chloe took a deep breath and motioned for Oliver to take her pad and pen. He did and he could see her straining to speak.

“I’m going…to…tell you what…to write.”

Oliver looked up from the paper and gave Chloe a look that clearly said she was crazy. She shook her head.

“Don’t argue, just write.”

Ten minutes, three pages, and six contractions later the story was finished. At this point Chloe was full of sweat and Oliver was looking a bit pale. A powerful contraction hit and Chloe’s body jerked slightly forward as she grabbed onto the nearest thing next to her.

As she crushed her purse she let out a long wail.

“Ahhhhhhhhh….CLAAAAAAARK…”

Less than five minutes later the elevator doors were being ripped opened and Clark was standing there in his Superman uniform. There was concern on his face as he came across the scene.

“What happened? What’s going on?”

Oliver stood up, pale faced and pointed.

“She’s having the baby.”

Clark’s eyes widened and he staggered slightly.

“Oh my god…I’m going to be a father…”

Oliver frowned.

“Clark focus, she’s been in labor the past twenty-five minutes or so. She needs a hospital.”

Clark looked over at Chloe, bent down, and swept her into his arms.

“Twenty-five minutes….why the hell did you wait so long to call me?”

Chloe winced and her breathing got heavier.

“I was…interview…with Oliver…Clark please…”

Clark looked at Oliver and spoke in a hurry.

“Can you get out of here yourself or do you need me?”

Oliver waved him off.

“Go I got it.”

Clark nodded and sped out of the elevator shaft and into the Daily Planet lobby. Chloe’s voice made it’s way to his ears.

“Superman…can you just put this….ouch…ugh…can you drop this on Perry’s desk?”

Clark glared at Chloe and spoke in a low tone.

“Are you out of your mind?”

“All that work…do it Clark…or so…ouch ouch ouch…oh god I can’t do this…I changed my mind I don’t want to have a baby anymore…”

She pouted and Clark chuckled.

“I think it’s a little late for that Chlo. Hold on tight.”

Clark sped Chloe out of the Daily Planet and to the hospital, but not before dropping her completed article off on Perry’s desk.

********************

Twenty-two hours later Chloe was lying in a hospital bed holding a small blue bundle in her arms. Clark was sitting on the bed with an arm around her as he looked down at his son.

“Wow…”

Chloe grinned.

“I know…he’s perfect.”

Clark nodded.

“He absolutely is. Thank you so much Chlo…you’ve given me…the most amazing gift.”

Clark leaned down and kissed Chloe’s forehead before pulling her against him where she snuggled and let out a content sigh. Her voice was soft when she spoke.

“I thought we wouldn’t make it here in time…”

Clark looked at her and gave her a playful glare.

“Yeah, me either. It’s almost hard to believe that Jonathan was nearly born in an elevator because his mother wanted to finish an interview.”

Chloe gave him a sheepish look.

“I had a deadline…you know how Perry get’s when we miss a deadline.”

Clark chuckled lightly.

“I’m sure he would have been okay with it this once considering you were in labor and all.”

She rolled her eyes and huffed.

“Okay fine…I don’t like to miss deadlines…I told you when we decided to have a baby Clark, that I could do both and I wasn’t giving up my career…you said you were okay with that.”

He nodded.

“And boy did you multi-task today. If this is a little taste of what the future is going to be like…I think we’re in for a long adventure.”

She grinned.

“I wouldn’t have it any other way big boy.”

Clark and Chloe stayed curled up together with Jonathan in bed enjoying the quiet and each others company before their families showed up. At the same time on the other side of Metropolis Perry was sitting at the head of a conference table with an open copy of that day’s Daily Planet.

He stood, looked around the room and tossed the paper across the table. Scrawled across the front page is the headline ‘Queen Industries Develops New Green Technology’ he points to the paper.

“This is why Sullivan and Kent are my top leading reporting team. Look at this story people. It’s perfection, and when did she write it?”

He glanced around the room looking at the scared faces of his employees. He knew they had heard what happened yesterday so the fact that no one was answering didn’t faze him.

“That’s right people…while she was stuck in one of our elevators in labor. Front page material…Now that is dedication…if only I could have more reporters like that maybe we’d have more stories like this one.”

He shook his head and took his seat. As he sat there he thought to himself, that’s right…there is no reporter more dedicated to the Planet then Chloe Sullivan…maybe that’s a trait that will be passed on to her offspring…well we can only hope…
