The Power Within Chapter (4/5)

Chapter 4
Metropolis
(Paige POV)

Chapter 5

I paced back and forth watching as the five men in the apartment tended to Chloe. That is her name…Chloe Sullivan…she’s the girl from Phoebe’s premonition and as soon as Leo gets back from talking with the elders we’ll know if she’s the witch we’re looking for.

“STOP IT!”

The loud yell stopped me in my tracks. Phoebe, Piper and I faced Chloe and froze. She stood up swiftly and pushed away from the guys. I don’t blame her…if it had been me I probably would have pushed them away a while ago. Granted they are hot…but still no one wants to be crowded…especially after everything that’s happened.

Piper stood and cleared her throat.

“Chloe, how about I make you some tea to calm your nerves. This can’t be easy to take in.”

Phoebe nodded as she got up and stood next to Piper. She gave Chloe a small grin.

“Trust us, when we found out we were witches…well it was definitely crazy and it took a while for us to actually believe it. As soon as Leo get’s back we’ll explain everything…until then let us do what we can to help.”

She glanced between the three of us wearily and then sighed.

“Fine. Tea would be nice.”

Piper nodded and looked toward the guys.

“Can someone tell me where the kitchen is?”

One of the guys stepped forward and gave her a tight smile.

“I’m Victor. Come with me, I’ll show you were it is.”

She nodded and they walked out of the room together. The rest of us stood around awkwardly. I opened my mouth to say something, but before I could Chloe looked at me and spoke.

“What’s a white lighter? And what was that thing that attacked me on the street? And who are the three of you?”

She shot question after question and I glanced at Phoebe. She took a deep breath and we sat down. I motioned for her to sit and she did across from us. The tall man with the blonde hair sat close to her and squeezed her hand gently.

She had a dark haired boy to her right, a guy who looked like he could be a surfer on the left, and a kid who didn’t look older than 17 directly behind her. Okay…this is going to be difficult…it’s almost like they’re posed to protect her…like we’re the enemy.

I tried to make my voice as warm as I could when I spoke.

“Which of those questions would you like the answer to first?”

She shrugged.

“As long as they are all answered, I don’t care.”

I nodded.

“Okay, a white lighter is…sort of a guardian angel. They are assigned to witches and people who are important…people who will at some point contribute something good to the world. Normally white lighters are technically dead…but I’m only half white lighter.”

She looked confused and Phoebe took over. She motioned towards me.

“Paige is half white lighter, half witch. Her mother…our mother was a witch and her father was like Piper’s husband Leo…a white lighter.”

Chloe nodded and Phoebe looked toward me to continue.

“You’re actually my first charge. I’m sorry I didn’t get to you before you were attacked. I couldn’t find you, but when you were in trouble…it was like a beacon. I knew where to go.”

“What attacked me?”

I hesitated before speaking.

“A demon.”

She gave me a look of disbelief as did a few of the guys. She opened her mouth to say something and Leo took that moment to shimmer back in the room. He appeared and opened his mouth, then froze. He glanced between Phoebe and me before looking toward Chloe and the guys. I raised an eyebrow.

“Everything okay here? Where’s Piper?”

I motioned to the other room.

“She’s making Chloe some tea.”

He nodded.

“Well your hunch was right. Chloe is the new witch coming into her powers.”

I went to say I told you so when a loud chuckle caught my attention. Everyone turned toward Chloe who was sitting there laughing. I frowned. This can’t be good…maybe she’s lost it or something…she shook her head and her tone was amused when she spoke.

“Powers? I think you’re all crazy…”

I gave her a hurt look and opened my mouth, but she cut me off.

“Don’t get me wrong. I believe you…that you’re witches or white lighters or whatever. I believe there are strange things out there…things that people don’t understand or respect. I’m not ridiculing who you are or what you…do in your spare time. However, I am not a witch.”

She smiled and chuckled again.

“I don’t have any powers. I’m your run of the mill 25-year-old journalist slash foundation owner, nothing more. I think you’ve got the wrong girl, but I appreciate the help you gave me tonight. Thank you.”

I gave Phoebe and slight look of shock. This girl didn’t think we were lying or crazy…she just doesn’t believe she’s one of us. I can work with that. Usually everyone just thinks we’re crazy. I glanced back over at her and saw Piper standing to the side behind the guys holding a cup of tea.

“What’s that book over there?”

All heads turned in her direction as she pointed to a black leather bound book lying on a chair in the corner. Chloe frowned and glanced at the book.

“It’s…it was my mother’s.”

Piper nodded, walked further into the room, handed Chloe the cup of tea and motioned to it.

“May I?”

She shrugged, but looked uneasy. Piper walked over and picked it up. She turned it over in her hands and I finally got a good look at it. My eyes widened slightly. It’s a book of shadows…it doesn’t have any engravings like ours, but it looks sturdy…and old…

She faced Chloe, held the book up and spoke.

“Have you looked inside of this?”

She shook her head.

“Not yet. I was going to look through it later tonight…but then everything happened.”

Piper nodded and held the book out to Chloe.

“Maybe it’s time you look through it. It’s late, and I know you must be exhausted. Why don’t we all meet up tomorrow afternoon? You’ll have time to look over your mother’s book and we’ll have time to get some information together so that we have more to tell you about what’s going on. Does that sound like an okay plan?”

I watched Chloe look between the four of us and nodded curtly. Phoebe and I stood and so did Chloe. She walked us to the elevator and when we were inside she spoke.

“Thank you again Paige. You saved my life tonight…I…just thanks.”

I smiled.

“I’m glad I got there in time. Try to enjoy the rest of your night.”

She gave me a tight smile and the door closed as we made our way down. I sighed and glanced at Piper.

“What was that all about?”

“She might believe that there are witches in the world, but she doesn’t trust us. Something is going on with the six of them. They are hiding something and until they decide they can trust us we aren’t going to get anywhere.”

Phoebe nodded.

“Give her the night Paige and we’ll talk to her tomorrow. Leo do the elders know why demons are coming after Chloe?”

“They want her power.”

I raised an eyebrow.

“What is her power?”

Leo shrugged.

“I don’t know. All I know is that she is the only one left in the world with this power.”

“What about her mom?”

Leo faced me and sighed.

“Something happened…she no longer possesses the power she was born with. A warlock replaced her memories with different ones…she doesn’t know she’s a witch anymore…she thinks she’s something else, but if we can get Chloe to agree to our help we might be able to restore her mom’s memories and powers.”

I nodded.

“Then that’s what we’ll do.”

The elevator chimed and we walked out and down the road glancing around to make sure no one was looking. As we shimmered into blue and white light I felt determination seep into me. We will get Chloe to listen to us…We never got a chance to save our mother, but Chloe has that chance. We’ll get her to accept who she is so we can save her mother…like we never could ours…

The Next Morning

(Chloe POV)

I sat at the kitchen table as I flipped through the book again. My mother is a witch…I lifted the cup of coffee up to my lips, closed my eyes, and relished the warmth that filled my mouth. I heard rustling and opened my eyes to find Oliver watching me from across the table.

He had a light grin on his face before he spoke.

“I love watching you drink your coffee…it’s almost erotic.”

Despite my mood I chuckled softly and he grinned.

“Ah, there’s that smile I know and love.”

When I didn’t say anything he folded the paper and put it aside. He reached across the table and grasped my hand before rubbing a thumb across it.

“Talk to me Chlo…what’s going through that head of yours?”

I looked up at him with watery eyes.

“I’m a witch…”

“Okay…I’m the Green Arrow…”

I frowned at him.

“My mother used to cast spells…I have some kind of hidden power and…I’m a witch…”

I emphasized the last word and he nodded.

“Chloe…I dress up in green tights in my spare time and hang out with people with supernatural powers…you being a witch…Sidekick…it doesn’t even rate on the scale. I mean jeez…Clark’s an alien from outer space. I’d believe in witches before I believe in aliens.”

I gave him a slight grin and his lips turned up at the corner. His voice was soft and understanding when he spoke.

“Finding this stuff out…it doesn’t change who you are Chlo. Not to me and it won’t change you to the guys either. You’ll always be our Watchtower…Sidekick…this doesn’t make me love you any less and it won’t make them love you any less.”

I felt a tear slid down my cheek as I got up and threw myself into Oliver’s arms. He pulled me down and rubbed my back as he whispered in my ear.

“Shhh…everything’s going to be fine. You’ll talk to these girls, who obviously seem to know something about witches and then we’ll deal with things as they come.”

I nodded against his chest and then pulled away to look at him.

“So…you still want to marry me?”

He gave me a look of disbelief.

“Are you kidding? Now I want to marry more…our life can be just like an episode of Bewitched.”

I slapped him, he chuckled and I laughed.

“Thanks Ollie…”

His eyes glimmered as they gazed into mine.

“Anytime baby.”

He glanced down at his watch and sighed.

“I have a quick meeting, but I’ll be back in time for our lunch with Piper and them and don’t worry the guys aren’t coming. It’ll be just us and we can fill them in whenever you’re ready.”

I nodded.

“Great.”

He slapped my ass gently and I got up. He leaned over, gave me a kiss, and left. I took my mothers book and headed into the living room. If I’m a witch…then maybe it’s time to go through this book and start learning some stuff…I took a deep breath and opened the book to the first page. Here goes nothing…

(Oliver POV)

I lifted my jacket and put it on as I made my way out of the office. I still can’t believe everything that’s happened in the past 24 hours. Chloe turned 25…I proposed…and we found out she’s a witch. When Paige brought Chloe back to the apartment last night I was terrified.

There weren’t too many people left at the party so we sent them home and then dealt with the three women. Paige explained what happened and then when they left I held Chloe for hours while she cried. I ran a hand through my hair as I got out of the building.

My driver opened the door and I got into the limo. This morning Bart sped into my office furious that I proposed to Chloe. He claimed that he was finally wearing her down. I listened to him yell at me for a few minutes before he sagged in a seat and congratulated me.

The vibration in my pocket brought me out of my thoughts. I glanced at the phone and smiled.

“Hey.”

“Hey Ollie, are you still working?”

“No, I’m on my way to you.”

I heard a car door slam and I frowned.

“No, it’s fine. I just got in my car. We’re meeting them at 2 at the Ace of Clubs. Can you meet us there?”

“Yes.”

“Okay, I’ll see you in a little bit okay?”

“See you soon. I love you.”

I could hear the smile on her face as she spoke.

“I love you too.”

The line went dead. I closed the phone and sighed as I leaned back. I pushed a button and the window between me and my driver came down.

“Change of plans Ramón…can you take me to the Ace of Clubs?”

“Sure thing boss.”

I pushed the button and the window slid back up. That gives me about twenty minutes…the perfect amount of time for a quick nap…

(Tess POV)

I was scrolling through my phone when the car came to a stop. Thank god we’re finally here. It took long enough. My phone beeped as a dot appeared on the screen. Ah ha…there you are. The door opened and I glanced up.

“How far are we from the warehouse?”

“About three blocks. I can’t get the car any closer.”

I waved him off.

“It’s fine.”

I put the phone in its case, got out of the car, and turned to face him.

“I shouldn’t be longer than fifteen, twenty minutes.”

He nodded and I started walking up the street. I glanced around making sure no one was watching me before making my way down an ally between two buildings. I pulled out my phone and watched as the blinking dot got closer.

It took three weeks for the scientist to track down this meteor infected teen and hopefully I could get her to come with me willingly. If not…well…I had a team waiting and ready to be called in. I walked a few more feet when I heard a loud crash.

I frowned and placed my back against the brick wall as I turned the corner cautiously. What I saw made my eyes go wide…Oh my…

(Chloe POV)

My body crashed into the dumpster as the demon circled around me. I winced before standing up. This is what I get for taking the short cut to the Ace of Clubs for lunch. The demon growled and came back at me. I moved around and tried to make my way to the other side of the ally.

I darted forward and it grabbed my jacket. I swung around, hit it in the head, and it let go of my jacket. My eyes widened as it lifted its hand and some kind of ball made of fire appeared there. I felt my heart start to speed up.

No…I won’t die like this…It raised its hand readying to toss at me and my hand shot out in front of me. He let go and as the fireball flew at me I closed my eyes and screamed. I could see a bright light shine through my eyelids and then it was dark.

There was a loud wail and then nothing. I opened my eyes and stared in front of me. There was nothing there except for a smoking burn on the ground. I looked at my hand and then at the spot where the demon used to be. I killed it….
