The sun was beating down on Bart as he walked down the street to Oliver’s old apartment, which now served as headquarters for the Justice League. Bart glanced down at his watch and sighed. He hated walking around at normal speed, but he had promised Clark and Oliver he’d stay inconspicuous and out of trouble while they were gone.

It was summer and things had been slow on the home front for the last few weeks. Oliver and Clark were out of town meeting with Bruce Wayne in Gotham City. Mr. Wayne met Clark a few months back at some kind of event for Senator Kent and Oliver…

Well Oliver was a different story all together. He’s been trying to get the “batman” to join the league for a while now. He was hoping this meeting with Mr. Wayne would form some kind of alliance. Why is it always the wonder boy billionaires that feel the need to dress up in costume and save the world?

Bart shook the thought out of his head as he crossed the street and caught sight of a dairy queen. Score! He thought before making his way slowly into the shop. He waited in line and glanced at his watch for the second time.

Since Clark and Oliver were out of town, and Victor and A.C. were on a recon mission he was the only one around to watch the control center. Well the only one aside from Chloe. His body shivered lightly at the thought of his beautiful blonde goddess…Okay well maybe she wasn’t his, but with luck that would change soon.

Chloe had just recently broken up with her latest flame of the week and Bart was looking forward to hopefully showing her what an amazing guy he was. There has always been a flirtatious nature to the relationship he shared with Chloe…

All he wanted to do was expand on that…was that so wrong? He was startled out of his thoughts by the girl at the counter asking him what he wanted. He gave the menu a quick once over and he spoke with a grin on his face.

“Hola senorita, can I get a large pineapple, strawberry smoothie to go?”

She gave Bart a shy smile and nodded as she got to work on his shake. Bart leaned against the counter pondering the different ways he could let Chloe in on his feelings. Maybe he should invite her over to the clock tower tonight…make his move while no one was around…

His thoughts were again interrupted by the young lady at the counter. She rang him up and handed him his shake.

“That will be $3.50”

Bart pulled out a $5 bill, handed it to the girl and winked.

“Keep the change sweet thang…”

He walked out of the store and started back down the road toward the tower. Bart had been sipping his smoothie and walking for about ten minutes and he still had about thirteen blocks to go. This is ridiculous…this is what not having a car will do to you, he thought.

Bart crossed another street, looked around at everything in his immediate vicinity and took off at super speed. When he stopped he was three feet in front of the building the clock tower was apart of. He grinned. Well that worked out nicely.

He opened the double glass doors, nodded to the doorman on duty and made his way into the elevator to head upstairs. He pushed the button for the penthouse and something strange happened. It didn’t work. He frowned and pushed the button a few more times.

When he got the same results, Bart walked out of the elevator and back to the front of the building so he could speak to the doorman. There was a slight edge of worry in his voice when he spoke.

“Yo Jose, is the elevator broke?”

He looked up at Bart and seemed startled by the question. He shook his head.

“No, people have been coming and going all day…the elevator works fine.”

Bart started to feel a slight prickling of the hairs on the back of his neck, telling him something wasn’t quite right with this situation.

“I can’t get to the penthouse. Have there been any visitors today?”

Bart was messaging Oliver and Clark as he spoke to Jose. Jose gave Bart a knowing smirk.

“Well your blonde bombshell got here about twenty-five minutes ago. Said she was here to drop off some paperwork.”

Bart’s frown deepened.

“Anyone else? Anyone who looked unfamiliar?”

Jose looked thoughtful for a minute before something clicked on his face.

“I did see a few men come in a little while ago. They barely said anything, just headed straight up.”

Bart nodded as he took off to the stairs calling “Thanks” over his shoulder. All of Bart’s warning signals were going off. Something was wrong. Once he got in the stairwell, Bart sped up nine flights of stairs to get to the doors that opened up the clock tower. He reached out and turned the knob.

It was locked. Bart was jiggling the knob when he heard a crash and a very distinct screech. Chloe…Bart jogged down two flights of stairs, took a deep breath, and then sped as fast as he could back up the stairs and into the door.

It splintered apart; he crashed into the room and stumbled slightly. When Bart looked up there were two large guys in suits holding on to Chloe. Bart didn’t even take the time to work out a solid plan. His presence startled the men enough that they lost concentration and Bart took their distraction as an opportunity.

He sped over to the guy that was behind Chloe, threw his leftover smoothie on top of him, pulled his belt which twisted the guy away from Chloe’s back, and pushed him into the window. He crashed through and landed outside on the balcony.

Chloe fell to the ground and the other guy charged Bart. He sped so he was behind the guy, kicked him in the ass, and the guy in the suite stumbled forward. Bart sped in front of him and yanked him out onto the balcony with the other guy.

He knocked their heads together and they fell unconscious to the floor. Bart glanced over the balcony and saw a black limo waiting on the street below. Bart squinted at the vehicle and his blood ran cold when he saw the name on the license plate. Lex.

Bart sped around the penthouse, found some rope and tied the two men together outside. He came back in the room at normal speed and was at Chloe’s side in an instant helping her stand up. His brows were furrowed with worry.

“You okay there Chloelicious?”

She glanced down and brushed her skirt off and winced as she was bringing her arm back up. She let out a small hiss.

“Ouch.”

“Let me see.”

Bart turned Chloe’s arm gently and saw the gash. She sat on one of the chairs and Bart spoke.

“I’ll go get the first aid kit. Hang tight gorgeous.”

“Bart its fine. Don’t…”

But he was already gone and back with the kit. She watched as he cleaned out the cut and dressed it. She was watching his movements and she felt a warm feeling radiate throughout her body. For the past few weeks Chloe has been having the oddest feelings for Bart.

She was almost positive that she was falling for him. It sounds strange. Chloe spends 80 percent of her time with five of the world’s greatest heroes. She knows for a fact that at least of those five heroes are attracted to her in some way.

Bart isn’t the tallest, he isn’t the richest, he isn’t the strongest, he isn’t the most technical, and yet he is perfect in his own way. He is more resourceful than anyone she’s ever known. When he’s embarrassed he scratches the back of his neck and lets out the cutest chuckle.

He’s loyal to a fault, he marches to his own drum, he’s funny, he take’s care of her and if there is anyone in the league that she has the most in common with it’s him. Chloe sighed as she waited for Bart to look up at her. He finally did and the frown left his face and was replaced with a warm smile.

“What’s going on in that head of yours gorgeous?”

She shrugged.

“Just thinking.”

“About?”

“Your timing…it’s perfect you know that?”

He chuckled lightly, but she could see the underlined tension in his body. She placed a hand on his arm; he looked down at it before returning her gaze. He swallowed hard and the humor had left his voice when he spoke.

“It’s no big deal. That’s what we’re here for right? I’ll always be there if you need me Chloelicious. Whenever, wherever.”

She nodded. Their eyes didn’t break contact and her voice came out low.

“I know…you’re always there Bart…why?”

She titled her head to the side and Bart raised an eyebrow, rubbed the back of his neck and chuckled lightly. Chloe smiled. He was nervous…

“What do you mean, why?”

“Why are you always there for me?”

He stumbled on his words.

“Well…you’re…I mean…it’s…we’re part of the team. We’re here for each other…that’s…”
His voice trailed off when her warm hand covered his. He cleared his throat, swallowed hard, and remembered what he was saying to himself earlier. That it was time to take the plunge and tell her how he felt. His voice was soft and serious, very unlike his usual self.

“I…you mean a lot to me. I want to make sure you’re safe.”

Her heart melted.

“You mean a lot to me too.”

He gave her a tense smile.

“I don’t think you understand what I’m saying Chlo.”

She entwined their hands and leaned closer to him. He moved back slightly and lifted his face so their eyes were level.

“Quite the contrary Bart…I think I understand exactly what you’re saying.”

Shock covered his face and he could see amusement covering hers. He was confused and didn’t know what to say.

“I…”

He didn’t have a chance to finish his sentence. Chloe leaned in and captured Bart’s lips with hers. He cupped her cheek hesitantly and after a couple of seconds he deepened the kiss. A minute or so later they pulled apart and Bart was looking at Chloe with awe on his face.

She laughed and then grinned.

“Thank you for saving me from Lex…I thought he was through trying to hold me in one of his 33.1 facilities…I guess I was wrong.”

He tilted up her chin with his finger.

“We all thought he was done…we won’t make that mistake again...and you’re welcome.”

He grinned back at her. They sat there looking into each other’s eyes and Bart new from that moment on things would be different, their relationship had shifted…changed and he couldn’t be happier about it. One thing that would always stay the same though, is their friendship.

It wouldn’t be easy, especially explaining things to the guys when they got back, but Bart wasn’t worried. Neither was Chloe. They knew things would work out, because they had the most important thing on their side already…love.
