Memories of Us Chapter (10/13)

Chapter 10
‘A Love That Will Not Alter’

“Shakespeare said, Love is not love which alters when it alteration finds. When life gets hard, when things change, true love remains the same. I don't know if I can explain that, but they give me hope. And, I'm afraid say it out loud because maybe if life finds out it'll try to beat it out of them and that will be a shame. Because, we all can use a little hope sometimes, you know. That feeling that everything's going to be okay and that there's going to be someone there to help make sure of that. So, here's to hope, and here's to a love that will not alter.” –Brooke Davis-

The Park
Tree Hill- 2010

Brooke stood in front of the mirror and smoothed out her dress. She couldn’t believe it was her wedding day. She glanced around the medium sized tent and smiled. Moving back to Tree Hill was probably the best thing she’d ever done. She was able to reconnect with Haley, open up a Clothes over Bros store in Karen’s old Café, and most importantly be with Lucas on a daily basis.

His book had taken off and a young director had just bought the rights to turn it into a movie. Things were going amazing. Brooke had everything she could ever ask for and after today, she’d be married to the love of her life. She shook her head and smiled into the mirror.

“Hey, you almost ready?”

She turned and saw Haley standing in the opening of the tent. Brooke nodded.

“Almost.”

“Wow…you look amazing Brooke.”

“Thanks Tutor Wife.”

Haley chuckled at Brooke’s use of their old nicknames. She came up behind Brooke and stood there. Brooke turned to face her and Haley could see the glow of happiness on her face.

“Can you believe this Hales? I never thought I could be this happy.”

She nodded.

“I know what you mean. We’re gonna be family Tigger!”

Brooke gave Haley a warm smile, grabbed her hand, and gave it a light squeeze.

“We’ve always been family…it’s just more…official now.”

They leaned in and hugged each other as Nathan and Jamie appeared at the opening.

“You girls ready?”

They broke apart and wiped at their eyes carefully as to not mess up any make-up. Brooke grinned at Jamie.

“There’s my favorite godson. Get that cute butt over here Jimmy-Jam.”

Jamie rolled his eyes playfully, ran over, and hugged Brooke. When she put him down Nathan smiled.

“Wow, I have the prettiest sister-in-law ever.”

Brooke chuckled.

“You’re not so bad yourself.”

She winked and Haley shooed Nathan and Jamie out of the tent with a smile. Brooke picked up her veil and as she was putting it on Haley spoke in a soft voice.

“Have you heard back from her?”

Brooke glanced at Haley through the mirror and nodded.

“That new company she’s working for in LA just promoted her. She couldn’t get away.”

Haley nodded, but they both new why Peyton wouldn’t be attending the wedding. Brooke had tried to stay in touch with Peyton over the years, but ever since Brooke and Lucas had gotten back together at the end of junior year in high school, Peyton had distanced herself from them.

She still had feelings for Lucas and it was hard seeing Brooke with him, and Brooke understood that. She sighed and gave Haley a watery smile.

“I’m ready…”

It was a gorgeous day out. Perfect for an outdoor wedding. Haley was surprised that Lucas and Brooke had chosen to have a simple ceremony in the park. She always figured Brooke as more of a traditionalist, but then again Brooke always had a way of surprising her.

Haley made her way out of the tent and told the band Brooke was ready. She grabbed her flowers and when the music started to drift over the crowd she smiled and walked down the aisle towards Nathan and Lucas. She steeped to the side and the band started the wedding march. Everyone stood when Brooke appeared at the head of the isle.

Her eyes met Lucas’ and he sent a blinding smile her way. Coach Durham walked her down the aisle and kissed her cheek before giving her hand to Lucas. Once they were standing across from each other the minister cleared his throat and every sat down.

“We are gathered here today to witness the joining between Lucas Scott and Brooke Davis…”

Brooke’s thoughts trailed off as the priest spoke. She couldn’t believe this day had finally come. She was going to be Mrs. Lucas Scott. There was a time when she thought that she and Lucas would never make it, she was happy to be wrong about that.

Lucas watched the thoughtful look on Brooke’s face. He couldn’t help but wonder what she was thinking about. His mother always told him that dreams could come true and that if he worked for it, he could have anything his heart desired. He never truly believed her until this moment.

The priest’s next words brought both Brooke and Lucas out of their thoughts.

“Brooke and Lucas have chosen to write their own vows. Brooke…”

Brooke nodded towards the priest, turned to Haley, and took the paper that she held out.

“Lucas, it’s been said that there is one word that will free us from the weight and pain of life. That word is love, and I believe that. You are my best friend and so I give myself to you today. I promise to encourage and inspire you, to laugh with you, and to comfort you in times of sorrow and struggle. I can’t wait for the chance to grow old together and get to know the man you will become in time. I promise to love you in good times and in bad, when life seems easy and when it seems hard, when our love is simple, and when it is an effort. I promise to cherish you, and to always hold you in highest regard. These things I give to you today, and all the days of our life.”

By the end of her vows Brooke was crying and Lucas reached out a hand and wiped the tears away with his thumbs. She slipped the ring on his finger right as a stray tear slid down his cheek. He smiled. Only Brooke Davis, soon to be Scott, could make him this emotional. This minister cut in.

“Lucas…”

He nodded, turned to Nathan, and took his vows from him before turning back to Brooke. He smiled at her.

“Brooke…my pretty girl…They say if you find love, you should hold onto it with dear life…we’ll I’ve found it and I never plan on letting it go and so I stand here today and give myself to you. I will laugh with you in times of joy and comfort you in times of sorrow. I will share in your dreams, and support you as you strive to achieve your goals. I will listen to you with compassion and understanding, and speak to you with encouragement. I will remain faithful to you and to our vows for better or for worse, in times of sickness and health. You are my best friend and I will love and respect you always. I’ve always said you’re the one I wanted next to me when my dreams came true…it isn’t until now I realize you are the dream.”

Brooke cried when Lucas slid the ring on her finger and the priest announced them husband and wife. Lucas pulled her to him and captured her lips in a deep kiss and their guests clapped and congratulated them, but they didn’t hear any of it. Brooke and Lucas Scott were too busy being lost in each other.
