She hadn’t meant to find it, not really anyway. It’s not as if she was snooping. They’d gone back to his place after successfully completing a mission where he could hop in the shower while she ordered dinner. After the long day she and Oliver had, they were both ready for a quiet night in.

So she went over to his desk, pulling out the drawer he kept the menus in and that’s when she saw it. There wasn’t anything particularly special about the magazine sitting there on top of the menus except for the fact that it was a Cosmopolitan.

Out of curiosity she picked it up and a slip of paper fell out from a page that was dog-eared landing on the desk. She frowned and opened the marked page, eyes going wide as she glossed over the headline of the page.

“How to make your partner fall madly in love with you: Top Five Tips to make any guy or gal fall for you.”

She gaped at the article before looking over at the paper that had fallen to the desk. She reached out, lifting it from the smooth surface of the desk. Her jaw clenched as she noted Oliver’s messy scribble covered the paper.



A list…he made a list of things to do to get her to fall for him. Was he out of his mind? Talk about honesty, they’d agreed from the beginning that this was just fun…no strings and all along he’d been planning this? Chloe was furious.

“Hey, did you order the food yet?”

She turned and her anger faltered at the sight of him. He stood less than ten feet away from her, black sweats hanging loose on his hips, towel draped over his shoulders, and a few stray drops of water sliding down his naked chest.

There was a lazy grin on his face as he tousled his wet hair and walked forward wrapping his arms around her tense body. He raised an eyebrow when she didn’t respond in kind and instead moved out of his arms.

Her hand shot out as she slammed the magazine into his chest, the small paper on top of it. There was amusement in his eyes until they glanced down and caught sight of what she had slammed into him.

“What is this?”

He swallowed hard as he moved his hand up to take the magazine. Chloe’s hand slipped off his chest as he did. She took a couple of steps back, putting distance between them as she crossed her arms over her chest. He sighed.

Oliver knew he should have hidden the magazine better, but she didn’t usually come home with him. From the look on her face she was not happy and there was very little chance he’d be able to talk or flirt his way out of this one.

Sometimes the best course of action was just some blunt honesty. She raised an eyebrow when he didn’t say anything.

“Well?”

He tossed the magazine on the desk and shrugged as he plopped down in his chair.

“What does it look like?”

“It looks like you broke your promise. We agreed Oliver. We agreed this was just going to be two friends having fun.”

He nodded and let out a frustrated sigh.

“Yeah, of course I agreed. Jesus, how the hell else did you expect me to have any kind of shot with you? Don’t you get it Chloe?”

Her brows drew together in confusion at the irritation she heard in his voice.

“Get what Oliver?”

“I’ve liked you for a while now, but you’ve never actually taken the time to notice. I spend more time shuffling between Watchtower and Smallville then I do in my own damn apartment! Why exactly did you think I was spending all that extra time with you?”

She opened and closed her mouth, the anger melting from her face as she tried to think back to the times he’d spent at Watchtower before they started their little tryst. She shook her head.

“I just…I just thought you were trying to make me feel more like part of the team…being friendly. I don’t know.”

Oliver made a face and rolled his eyes.

“Yeah no I’m slightly more selfish then that. So when I saw my opening that night…I took it. I half expected you to slap me and walk away, but when you didn’t I agreed to your terms because I wanted you. I still do.”

Chloe bit her lip and looked away from him. They’d been doing this thing for five months now and with each passing day she’d been growing more and more attached to him. She tried not to and she was constantly beating herself up for breaking her own rules.

And here he was planning on making her break her rules. Trying to get her to care about him well all she’d been doing is trying not to. She finally turned back toward him and he wore a tired look on his face. Tear filled eyes met his.

“Why? Just tell me why?”

He swallowed hard and let out a heavy breath, his face softening as he took her in.

“Because Chloe…I’m falling in love with you and after everything I’ve been through…I’m not sure I can take losing you too. I wasn’t doing this to hurt you. I know you’re scared, but I also know you care about me.”

He stood closing the distance between them, cupping her cheek and tilting her head up.

“Give me a chance…please. No, don’t say anything. I get it okay? I understand, but you can’t fight this forever. I’m not Clark or Jimmy or any other guy you’ve dated. You and me…we’re one in the same Sidekick…can’t you see that?”

Chloe could see the pleading in his eyes and it made her heart clench. Of course she could see it, that’s one of the reasons she was so scared. Because if this didn’t work she knew nothing would. She squeezed her eyes shut and a single tear slid down her cheek.

A callused finger wiped it away and urged her eyes open, hands rubbing her back gently soothing the tension in her body. She let out a deep breath and relaxed against him as her arms slowly slid to his back. She knew he was right.

She should give them a chance. Things were going great, but what happened when the other show dropped? What would become of their friendship, their team then? She pulled back so their eyes met again, voice soft as she spoke.

“Promise me something.”

“Anything.”

“If this thing between us doesn’t work…if it goes south…promise me we’ll still be able to find a way to work together. That it won’t affect the team.”

He hesitated briefly and then gave her a small smile.

“I promise our personal life won’t get between working as a team.”

She nodded.

“Okay.”

“Okay?”

“One chance…”

He grinned.

“Trust me Professor…one chance is all I need.”

Chloe rolled her eyes before he swooped down and captured her lips in a mind blowing kiss. As his arms tightened around her, she couldn’t help but feel the calm that settled over her.

She’d never been lucky in love, but then again she’d never had a relationship like the one she had with Oliver. Maybe just maybe he was right…once chance was all they needed.
