Chapter 1
‘Coming Home’
Chloe glanced at her watch for the third time before giving Nancy, the real estate agent a tight smile.
“I’m sure he’s on his way.”
The older woman nodded and let out a sigh as she placed the folder on the kitchen counter and flipped it open.
“I’m sure he is. Now you said the two of you are making this purchase together?”
“Yes, that’s right.”
“Well while we’re waiting for your…other half to get here how about we get started on your portion of the paperwork?”
Chloe smiled and nodded.
“Sure.”
She placed her bag on the counter and started going through the paperwork with their agent. She bit her lip as she signed page after page of the lease. She’d been waiting for this day ever since they’d found Evan out in the middle of that field.
Four years later and they were finally ready to be a real family. Right as she was signing her name to the last sheet of paper, Clark walked into the apartment looking slightly disheveled as he straightened his tie.
“Hey sorry I’m late. Perry had something he needed me to look at.”
He made his way over and placed a chase kiss on Chloe’s lips before smiling at the realtor.
“What’d I miss?”
“Oh nothing, just signing my soul away; speaking of which I believe Nancy needs your John Hancock as well.”
He nodded taking the pen from her out-stretched hand and glancing down at the papers. He couldn’t believe that it was finally time to bring Evan home. When he and Chloe first found Evan they were still in high school, not exactly the perfect age to become parents.
So Lex, knowing how much Evan meant to him and Chloe, took it upon himself to make arrangements for the two-year-old to stay with a family that worked for Luthor Corp until they were able to legally adopt him.
Now here they were four years later, graduates of Metropolis University, working at the Daily Planet, and investing in their first apartment together. Clark scribbled his name on the last line and closed the packet of papers before sliding it over to Nancy.
“All done.”
She smiled at the grinning couple in front of her as she slipped the contract into her purse.
“Well guys, you’re all set, congratulations and welcome home!”
They thanked her as she made her way out of the apartment. As soon as the door shut behind her Chloe threw herself at Clark with a girlish squeal. He chuckled, catching her in mid-air. He didn’t think he’d ever seen her so happy.
“Oh my god Clark…we have our own place!”
“I know.”
“No more shuffling back and forth to dorm rooms with nosey roommates.”
He made a face.
“Thank god for that.”
She nodded as he placed her back on the ground without releasing his hold on her waist. Chloe slipped her arms around his neck and smirked.
“So Mr. Kent now that we’ve got this big apartment all to ourselves however will we spend our time today?”
He could see the mischief in her eyes and he glanced at his watch briefly before giving her a wolfish grin.
“We’ve got about an hour before our appointment with the social worker…I bet I can think of a few things we can do before then.”
There was a rush of wind before Chloe felt Clark’s hands cupping her ass and lifting her until she was sandwiched between him and the wall. She wrapped her legs around his waist and giggled as his lips descended on her neck.
She bit her bottom lip and moaned. Clark grinned at the sounds she was making. Yup, today was definitely going to be an amazing day.
~*~*~*~*~
Lana glanced at her watch and let out a frustrated sigh. She was running late for lunch with Lex. She hurried into the restaurant and when Lana saw the host she stopped and smiled. He returned her smile before speaking with a heavy French accent.
“Bonjour, bon après-midi puis-je vous aider?” (Hello, good afternoon may I help you?”)
Lana nodded.
“Oui, je rencontre Lex Luthor pour le déjeuner.” (Yes, I’m meeting Lex Luthor for lunch.)
“Ah, oui Madame la droite le chemin” (Ah, yes right this way madam)
She followed the man through the main room, up a couple of steps and into the back of the restaurant where Lex sat in a corner booth, a glass of scotch in front of him. As they came into view she gave him a small smile and waved.
He stood as Lana made her way over placing a soft kiss against his lips in greeting before taking a seat across from him. He glanced at the host and nodded his thanks.
“I’m so sorry I’m late. My meeting with a prospective charity went longer than expected.”
He smiled eyes softening, amusement coloring his voice as he spoke.
“Its fine, how did the meeting go? Is Luthor Corp supporting yet another charity?”
She rolled her eyes, took a sip of water and spoke as she spread her napkin over her lap.
“Not sure yet. I want to look into it a bit more before I commit. Speaking of committing have you spoken to Clark or Chloe today?”
Lex sipped at his scotch and nodded.
“I have. Clark actually called about ten minutes ago saying they were on their way to meet with the social worker now. I think they’re hoping to be able to drive back to Smallville tonight and pick up Evan.”
Lana’s eyes widened.
“Wow, that’s quick. I didn’t realize they’d be able to move so fast with everything. They must be beyond thrilled.”
Lex chuckled.
“They sounded pretty excited.”
He cleared his throat and Lana raised an eyebrow as he looked at her, all humor gone from his face. He took her hand in his, thumb brushing against her knuckles as he spoke, voice soft and yet indescribably intense.
“I didn’t bring you here to talk about Clark and Chloe though. Lana…you and I, we’ve been together for a few years now.”
She nodded.
“And I’ve grown accustomed to waking up by your side in the morning and falling asleep by your side at night. I’m not sure if you realize it, but knowing you…being with you has made me a better man.”
Lana’s eyes watered and she took a deep breath before leaning forward and speaking in a soft voice.
“You’ve done the same for me Lex. I just wan--”
He pressed a finger against her lips and grinned.
“I’m actually not done yet, but your words are encouraging.”
She frowned and he chuckled as he looked at their clasped hands while gathering his thoughts. He reached into his pocket with his free hand, pulled out a small box and placed it on the table in between them. He saw surprise register on her face as she caught sight of the box.
“Four years ago today we had our first date. Though it was interrupted by frantic phone calls it’s still a night I’ll never forget. I can’t imagine not having you by my side, so I guess what I’m saying is I’d really like it if you’d do me the honor of becoming my wife.”
Lana’s hand flew to her mouth and he detangled their hands and opened the box. She floundered for words for what seemed like hours, but was really only seconds. Tear filled eyes met his and she choked on her words when she finally spoke.
“Yes…ohmygod yes!”
He let out a relived sigh and laughed as he slipped the ring onto her finger. She leaned across the table gripping his face lightly as her mouth crashed against his. Lips molding together as he deepened it. A throat clearing got their attention.
Lex pulled back slightly and glanced up. Their waiter stood there eyebrow raised smile on his face as he watched the two love birds in his section.
“Désolé de vous interrompre ... puis-je vous offrir quelque chose” (Sorry to interrupt…may I get you something?)
Lex smiled.
“Oui, vous meilleurs bouteille de champagne s'il vous plait” (Yes, your finest bottle of champagne please.)
The waiter bowed slightly and moved away. Lana was grinning like a school girl. She couldn’t believe Lex had proposed. They’d been together for about four years and they’ve been living together for two of those years.
When the Metropolis dorms closed down after Dark Thursday she moved in with Lex and didn’t bother to move back out when they’d reopened. She shivered slightly at the thought of Dark Thursday. Lex had been taken over by Zod who was hell bent on bringing the world to its knees.
So many things had changed after that day, but the biggest was finding out about Clark’s secret. Something only Chloe had known for years. But after everything that happened with Lex the three of them worked together to save him and Clark came clean with her and Lex afterwards.
In so many ways that final act of trust was what cemented Clark and Lex’s friendship. They were closer than ever as were she and Chloe. A light caress against her hand as Lex brought it to his lips placing a gentle kiss there brought her out of her thoughts.
“A million dollars for your thoughts…”
She grinned.
“I’m…I can’t…god Lex. I’m so happy. Do you know how happy you’ve made me?”
He arched an eyebrow.
“I’m hoping quite happy.”
She nodded and let out a startled noise.
“I have to tell Chloe!”
Lex watched as Lana excitedly fished her phone out of her purse and dialed Chloe’s number as he shook his head. Women, he’d never understand their need to gossip then again he was resigned to the fact that there were a lot of things he’d probably never understand about them.
~*~*~*~*~
Chloe sat there looking at the woman in awe. That was it? Really? A few signatures on a piece of paper and Evan was really theirs?
“Is everything alright Chloe?”
She shook herself out of her thoughts and nodded eagerly.
“Yes of course Mrs. Campbell, sorry for some reason I just thought there would be more involved than that.”
The older woman laughed warmly as she studied the kids in front of her. It was rare that they found such amazing young people these days that were not only qualified to take in a child, but were willing and decisive about it.
It didn’t hurt that they were the original couple who had found the unique little boy four years ago. When Lex Luthor approached her with this idea several years ago, she had been against it.
Her argument had been that teenagers were fickle creatures and while they wanted the responsibility of parenting Evan then, they might change their minds once they were older and had a career and life of their own.
But these two had put her misgivings to shame. Not only did they check in with her every six months for the past four years, but they visited Evan as much as possible. They never missed a birthday or a holiday and it was clear as day that Evan adored them. And that was good enough for her.
“Chloe sweetheart I’ve been working this case for four years, I think you’ve earned the right to call me by my first name. The paperwork was drawn up and went before a judge years ago, Lex saw to that. The only thing that was left were your signatures and my approval.”
Clark grinned and gripped Chloe’s hand between them.
“So this is it? We are officially and legally his parents?”
“You sure are. I’m going to call and inform the Gilberts. Are you planning to head down there today?”
Chloe nodded and smiled.
“We’re dying to see Evan. We’re going to stay in Smallville for a few days so Evan can have some time to get packed up while we get his school and medical records and tie up any other loose ends.”
She nodded.
“Wonderful. I’ll make the call and let them know you’re coming. Congratulations you two. Here’s something I never thought I’d say. Lex Luthor was right to put his faith in the two of you. I don’t think there are two people more deserving of this chance.”
She shook their hands before getting up and walking out of the room. Chloe turned to Clark and as she opened her mouth he shook his head.
“No…don’t do it. Don’t scream. As much as I love you Chlo’ your little screeches hurt the super hearing.”
She lifted a perfectly sculpted eyebrow at him.
“Is that right? Because you didn’t seem to be complaining all that much when I was calling out your name less than an hour ago.”
Clark blushed.
“Well…yeah that’s different.”
“Mmm I’ll bet. You ready to head out?”
He nodded and they stood. They left the building and right as Clark opened her door earning a small smile from her, Chloe’s phone rang. She fished it out of her purse as Clark go in the truck, started it, and pulled out onto the street.
“Sullivan.”
“Hey Chloe.”
“Lana hey! Clark and I have amazing news!”
“Me too.”
“You go first.”
There was a pause and then Clark winced as Lana’s girlish squeal made its way through the phone. He hated when Lana and Chloe squealed.
Chloe had never been the girly type, but put her and Lana together in a room and it was like they magically became thirteen year old girls again. It was odd and occasionally scary.
“Lex proposed!”
Chloe’s eyes widened as she glanced at Clark and let out a happy yelp.
“That’s amazing! Congratulations Lana. Oh my god I didn’t even know he was thinking of proposing. Clark did you know?”
She turned her head towards her boyfriend and he grinned. She slapped him lightly and shook her head as he chuckled.
“I can’t believe you kept this from me. Apparently my stupid boyfriend knew yours was going to propose and didn’t follow protocol and tell me.”
Lana laughed.
“He really needs to start following the rules. Sooo what’s your good news?”
“We signed the lease on the apartment and we’re heading to Smallville. Evan is officially ours!”
Clark winced as another round of squealing commenced and let out a sigh of relief when it was finally over. Their conversation lasted a few more minutes before Chloe disconnected the call. He glanced at her out of the corner of his eye and she let out a happy sigh.
“I can’t believe this…it’s like everything is finally coming together Clark. Lana and Lex are getting married…we’ve got our place…we’re getting Evan. It’s a like a dream come true.”
He nodded and took her hand in his.
“I know. It’s all kind of surreal. We’re parents. We have a six year old son. Just…wow.”
She leaned toward him and he moved his arm around her. They drove in comfortable silence the rest of the way toward Smallville with Chloe watching the land and trees pass her by. Her stomach fluttered and she smiled. Today would be the first day of the rest of their lives and she couldn’t wait.
