‘Random Conversations are Life Changing’
“I think we should move in together.”
Chloe choked on the coffee that she had just taken a sip of, the strong dark liquid hitting her hand as she raised it in front of her mouth to prevent her favorite beverage from getting all over Oliver’s kitchen island. She glanced up and stared at him, shock coloring her features as he continued going over the paperwork for a joint project with Wayne Enterprise.
“Excuse me, what?” He turned the page not looking at her as he spoke again voice completely calm as if he were talking about the weather or making dinner plans. “I said I think we should--”
“I heard what you said Oliver…contrary to popular belief I am not nor have I ever been deaf.” He nodded resting the pen against his lip, a look of concentration sliding over his face as he stared at the contracts. “That’s good…I’d hate it if you somehow stopped being able to hear all the dirty things I whisper in your ear while we’re having sex.”
Chloe rolled her eyes. They’d been together for close to six months, which relationship wise she supposed was a record for both of them, but that didn’t mean it was time to take things to the next level. It was also definitely not something they should be talking about while they were supposed to be having a care free weekend vacation in Star City.
His voice broke through her minds babbling and she focused on him again. “Thoughts?” She frowned. “My thoughts? On what?” He sighed and put the paper down glancing at her from across the room. “Moving in together. I’m thinking of having the bathroom at the penthouse redone…his and her sinks…you know so you don’t have to wait to get ready while I admire myself in the mirror.”
He grinned and her mouth dropped open. “His and her sinks…are you…high?” Oliver leaned back in his chair and pursed his lips together as a thoughtful look appeared on his face. “Hmm not to my knowledge no illegal drug use recently…high on life maybe.”
She blinked and then wiped her hand off with a paper towel before making her way around the counter and leaning against it. “Ollie…you’re not serious…” He frowned, “About the drugs? No I’m totally serious. I haven’t done any recreational drugs since we’ve been together…honest.”
Chloe grunted. “Oliver!” He smirked taking humor in her flustered appearance. “Yes Chloe?” She glared at her boyfriend. He was taking way too much enjoyment from this. “Please be serious.” He rested his arms against his chest and nodded.
“I’m entirely serious and to prove it, I have a flow chart.” Chloe stared at him, disbelief on her face. Did her boyfriend just say he had a flow chart about living together? She felt like she was in some kind of alternate reality…hell with their lives who knew maybe she was.
Still he was sitting there looking all proud of himself and so she crossed her hands over her chest and arched an eyebrow at him. “A flow chart?” He nodded giving her a smug look as he rested back in his chair. “Yes, would you like to see it?”
Chloe gave him an indignant look but motioned towards his papers. “Go ahead then.” He grinned reached toward the other end of the coffee table and picked up his laptop. He opened it pressing a few things and less than five minutes later he had the document up and enlarged in the window as he turned the screen toward her. She moved a few feet forward and glanced over the screen her mouth dropping wide open as she studied the green text.
Oliver cleared his throat and presented his case voice clear and business like. “I figured at the mention of living together you might have some kind of heart failure and so I put together a list of excuses I believe you’ll attempt to use in order to distract me from the main point of this trip to Star City…which by the way was to tell you we’re moving in together…”
Chloe was pretty sure her mouth couldn’t get any further to the floor if she tried. Somewhere between Metropolis and Star City Oliver had lost his mind. She pointed to the first set of boxes finally finding her voice. “There are three separate charts.”
He nodded and sent a smirk her way. “Glad you picked up on that. Now let’s go through your first three excuses for declining my offer.” Chloe threw her hands up in the air voice loud. “I didn’t decline your offer!” He shrugged. “Yet, but that’s only because I haven’t really given you a chance to talk.”
He pointed to the first box. “Back to this…it’s too soon. There is no set amount of time that one needs to spend with a person before it’s alright to live together. Secondly you spend four out of seven days a week at my place. You might as well just add three extra days.”
She opened her mouth and he held up a finger and shook it at her. “Ah, ah, ah not done. Independence. I know you have this whole thing about being on your own and not having to depend on other people blah blah blah. But I take at least one business trip each month which would leave you here all alone for a week. You can do whatever you want…and you’d still have Watchtower and your own life. The only difference would be you’d be coming home to a warm bed a night…possibly with a naked me in it…so seriously it’s all a win, win situation here.”
He saw her lip twitch and that encouraged him on. “And lastly in the first chart of course is leaving Lois. Honestly how much longer do you think she’ll be at the Talon? Cause I happen to have some insider knowledge that says boyscout is looking at rings…”
That news startled her and her eyes widened. “Really?” He nodded. “Yes…” He watched her carefully and she sighed. “Ollie…this is all…very thought out…and creepily accurate, but is it really necessary to fix--”
“What isn’t broken?” She paused and he pointed to the next set of boxes, which was actually labeled ‘why fix what isn’t broke.’ He gave her a cheeky grin. “Well Chloe I’m so glad you asked. For someone like you who isn’t convinced that you should move in with me because my apartment is awesome, I’m gorgeous and you like me…we can go with the next best thing. Practicality.”
She smirked, amusement dancing in her eyes. “That’s the next best thing is it?” He shrugged. “I needed to think like you, now quite. The penthouse is exactly 14 minutes from Watchtower. Living there would cut down your commute by over an hour and a half, which would undoubtedly be better for the environment. I’m all about being green.”
She snorted. “I’ll bet.” He ignored her comment and continued speaking. “Then of course there’s the morning sex. If you move in I can wake you up every morning with an orgasm…definitely something for you to look forward to…and that’s just one of the many benefits of cohabitating with me.”
It took everything in her not to chuckle at his words, but somehow she managed. She took a deep breath and spoke. “How is that different from now exactly?” He glared at her. “Well for starters…you don’t get orgasms everyday…only 3-4 times a week…”
She cut him off and pointed in his direction. “That’s actually not true.” He glared at her. “We aren’t counting the ones you give yourself…because the ones I give you are better.” She grinned and motioned for him to continue. “Proceed.”
He pointed to the last box in the row. “Progression. When two people care about each other enough that they want to be around each other as much as possible, the natural progression in the relationship says they take the next step. And for us, that’s living together.”
She pointed to the last row of boxes. “And the last chart?” Oliver frowned. “Seriously…I actually need to go through the last chart? I haven’t convinced you yet? I even color coded things….” She raised an eyebrow and he sighed.
“The last chart is random excuses. Fear of commitment…mooching off me for my money and future plans. I understand about the commitment thing, but honesty. Chloe look around, half your stuff is already at my place back in Metropolis…we’re a couple and have been for a while. As far as money goes…either way if you haven’t realized I pay your salary so whether you pay for things or I do…technically speaking the money is mine…I just wish it didn’t bug you so much.”
She bit her bottom lip knowing he was right, but still him paying her salary for a job she did was different than him paying for a whole bunch of other things. Still he made several good points. The thought of moving in with him scared the life out of her, but the thought that she could lose him if she said no scared her more.
Her voice was soft when she finally spoke. “And the future?” He studied her expression, swallowed hard and gave her a small grin. “I don’t know about you, but my future is standing right in front of me.” Chloe tilted her head to the side and then let out a dramatic sigh.
“Oh fine…but I’m telling you now…I’m expecting to wake up to orgasms every morning…or we’re going to have to renegotiate these living arrangements.” Oliver’s lips curled into a large smile as he reached forward and pulled her towards him. She chuckled lightly and cupped his cheek.
“That was all very random Mr. Queen.” He shrugged as he dipped his head forward pressing a kiss against her lips before moving back and brushing a stray curl behind her ear. He met her eyes warmth filling his as he spoke. “That’s one of the many reasons you adore me.”
She wrapped her arms around his neck and nodded. “It’s true.” He glanced towards the bedroom before looking back at her and waggling his eyebrows. “What do you say I give you a little preview of what waking up beside me every morning is gonna be like?”
Chloe chuckled, “I say bring on the preview Romeo.” He whistled, grabbed her hand and dragged her towards the bedroom. “That’s my girl.”

A flow chart. Your fic has an accompanying flow chart... It really just doesn't get better than that!
ReplyDeleteMy apologies that I'm just commenting now, but I've loved all of the pieces in this random conversations series, this one especially. You've done a great job of showing these special, little moments, and I can't get enough of them.
You really capture their voices and the dynamic between them. Chloe, in particular, was really on point in this installment. I like how she initially goes right to shock and resistance, but never really puts up much of a fight. And I love how Ollie knows her well enough to know that any opposition she puts up is just what she does and not that she doesn't care.
Great writing. Well done.
I think novadelphine covered it. YOUR FIC HAS AN ACCOMPANYING FLOW CHART! Oh...oh...my sides ache from the laughter. Oliver was hilarious. This whole thing was hilarious. I want someone to make ME a flow chart! lol
ReplyDeleteYou did not include a flow chart! LOL I love it. I love the way Ollie broke things down for Chloe and how she of course gave in. I love your comedic style of writing and of course I'm sad to see the "Random Conversations" series end, but it was fabulous!
ReplyDelete:)
You SO ROCK! I LOVE this fic, from the wording and the dialogue to the creative topics, it's all genius. I loved the chapter on the self love (LOL), it's so great to see them joke around, I really enjoy Oliver's reaction in that chapter. Also loved Oliver's 'Your this tiny little thing' line, so cute! Exactly how I picture Chloe, I love their size difference! Really enjoying this fic iverall, it feels really down to earth, yet thoughtful. You are just such a natural writer, it is a real pleasure to read your fic and I hope you continue with this one in particular!
ReplyDeleteI loved all the talks :)
ReplyDeleteReally awesome fic
