Chapter 2
‘Life’s A Changing’

Chloe sat with Mrs. Gilbert on the front porch while Clark, Evan and Mr. Gilbert played football in the large front yard. She bit her lip as she watched them and the older woman caught the worry on her face. She patted her arm gently, turning Chloe’s attention toward her.

“Everything will be fine dear.”

Chloe shook her head.

“I’m not so sure it will be Mary. You heard how upset Evan was. He doesn’t want to leave Smallville and I’m not sure what to do. I mean our lives are in Metropolis, it’s where we just bought an apartment…it’s where we work.”

Chloe let out a worried sigh.

“You know we spent all this time getting ready for him and the fact that he might not want to relocate to the city never even crossed our minds. A day and a half as parents and we’re already messing up.”

Mary let out a light chuckle as she watched Evan tackle Clark to the ground.

“Chloe, sweetie you aren’t messing up. Let him get used the idea. Ever since your last visit he’s been going on and on about how you’re all going to be living together soon. He’s just a little scared, give it some time. He loves you, it’ll work out.”

“I hope you’re right Mary.”

She let out short breath and turned back toward the yard in front of them, a small smile sliding onto her face at the sight that greeted her. Her face softened as she watched them, her worries momentarily cast aside. Clark really was amazing with him.

Clark grinned as Evan landed on top of him with a smile.

“You’re getting pretty good with that ball buddy.”

Evan nodded.

“Grandpa Gavin’s been teaching me. So, we got any good plans today? Can we go see Grandma and Grandpa Kent?”

He sat up and glanced over at John before looking back at Evan.

“Sure. Uncle Lex and Aunt Lana are also coming into town for a little bit. Any chance you might want to meet up with them for lunch?”

The six years olds eyes lit up as he bounced on the balls of his feet.

“Awesome and yes! I’m gonna go see if Mom’s ready to go.”

Clark nodded as Evan too off in the direction of the front of the house. Gavin moved over and held out a hand to the younger man. He took it and Gavin pulled him up. Clark cleared his throat and the older man raised an eyebrow.

“I just wanted to say thank you. Chloe and I…we really appreciate you guys taking care of Evan these past few years. We would have kept him with us, but…well it just wasn’t the right thing to do at the time.”

Gavin nodded and clapped a hand on Clark’s back as they walked in the direction of the house.

“It was no big deal. Mary and I were happy to do it. With our own kids grown and married it gets lonely out here. It’s been nice havin’ the little tyke around.”

Clark nodded as they made their way up the porch steps, Evan bouncing in front of Chloe like a ball of energy.

“Well can we, can we?”

She chuckled.

“Sure honey, let me just help Grandma Mary clean up and then we’ll head out. Go get grab your stuff okay?”

He nodded and made his way into the house. She smiled up at Gavin and Clark while placing the cups and plates on the tray.

“Thanks again for this guys. We really appreciate all the help you’ve given us over the past few years. Think we can leave his luggage here until later tonight?”

Mary nodded.

“Of course honey. Just pick it up when you’re done and if you two decided you don’t want to leave until the morning there’s always room for you here tonight.”

Chloe leaned over and gave Mary a hug.

“Thanks.”

Fifteen minutes later they were on the road heading towards town. Chloe peered in the backseat and smiled. Evan was buckled in his PSP in hand, biting slightly on his tongue as he shifted his game around intently focused on whatever was on the screen.

She looked away from him and at Clark. He must have felt her eyes on him because he turned to her and squeezed her hand gently, a curious look on his face.

“What’s on your mind?”

She shrugged and glanced out the window, voice soft.

“Just hoping he warms up to the idea of Metropolis before we need to get back to work. The last thing I want to do is upset him.”

Clark brought her hand up to his lips and placed a kiss on it.

“Don’t worry Chlo, we’ll work it out. For now let’s just take it one step at a time. Have you talked to Lana?”

She nodded.

“Yeah, they’re meeting us at the Talon.”

“Sounds good.”

Clark glanced in the rearview mirror at Evan before taking the turn off the highway and towards the center of town. He really hoped for Chloe’s sake that he was right and Evan just needed a little time to adjust, because moving back to Smallville after where their lives had taken them in Metropolis, the responsibilities they had to the city…it just wasn’t in the cards.

~*~*~*~*~

Lana sat in a booth next to Lex, fidgeting slightly. He peered at her out of the corner of his eye and smiled. Her eyes kept moving toward the door as she kept a look out for Chloe, Clark and Evan. She reached up pushing her hair behind her ears and he smiled at the sight of the diamond on her finger.

He still couldn’t believe she’d actually said yes. There was a part of him that didn’t think she would, but he was more than glad that part was wrong. He reached over and gripped one of her hands in his drawing her attention to him. She arched an eyebrow in his direction and he smiled.

“Why are you fidgeting?”

“No reason.”

She shrugged and he pursed his lips together as he made a face.

“You expect me to believe that?”

She sighed at the amusement on his face and let out a long breath while looking away from him.

“Fine…it’s just, well we haven’t seen Evan in a while and for some reason I feel like he’s never really warmed up to me and it’s no secret that he practically worships the ground you walk on. I just don’t want to do anything that will make him like me less.”

Lex chuckled lightly.

“Lana, Evan loves you, you know that. Sure it took him a little while to warm up to you, but that doesn’t mean anything. He adores the both of us and you know it. You have nothing to be worried about.”

She nodded.

“I’m sure you’re right.”

Lex opened his mouth to comment, but before he could the door to the Talon was pushed open and the energetic six year old ran in calling out to him.

“Uncle Lex!”

He stood and grinned as Evan practically jumped on him. He bent down slightly, hugging his nephew before moving back and giving him a once over.

“Hmm if I didn’t know any better I’d say you’ve grown quite a bit since the last time I saw you.”

Evan nodded.

“Sure did. Two whole inches!”

“It shows. Come over to the table I have something special to give you.”

Chloe and Clark walked over to the table, hands clasped, as Evan followed Lex. They sat down and he tilted his head toward Lana and waved.

“Hi Aunt Lana.”

“Hey sweetie, how are you?”

“Good.”

Lex sat back down and held up a small envelope. Evan plopped down next to him, his eyes lighting up as he took the envelope carefully before pulling it open. When he glanced inside his eyes widened before shooting up to Lex, who was smirking.

“Oh my god!”

He pulled out the comic wrapped in plastic.

“It’s the brand new Angel Warrior comic! I thought it wasn’t supposed to come out for two more months!”

“It’s not, but I happen to know a guy who knows a guy…”

Evan pounced on Lex, hugging him. He swallowed hard and tightened his hold on him. It was odd how well he got along with the six year old. If someone had told him four years ago that Clark Kent would be a father and he’d be an Uncle, Lex probably would have laughed in their face.

But now, well he couldn’t imagine what their lives would be like without the little boy in front of him. Evan had really cemented the friendship between him and Clark, finally allowing the younger man to open up to him about who and what he was.

In the past few years not only had Clark finally come clean to him about everything, but he and Chloe had helped Clark become the hero that the world needed. Superman was introduced to Metropolis two years ago and the crime rate had gone down exponentially.

It was nice to be a part of something that was good for a change. Lex had never had this kind of secret or trust between friends before. In fact Clark and Chloe had been the first people to offer their friendship without asking for anything in return and he was glad for it.

Chloe laughed at Evan’s excitement before meeting Lex’s eyes, humor evident on her face.

“You spoil him Lex.”

He shrugged.

“What’s an Uncle for if not to spoil his favorite nephew?”

Evan rolled his eyes before settling down next to Lex.

“I’m your only nephew Uncle Lex.”

“Ah, alas that is true, but still.”

Clark shook his head and Lana cleared her throat getting everyone’s attention as she addressed Evan.

“You know your Uncle Lex and I actually wanted to talk to you about something.”

She glanced at Lex and he nodded before speaking.

“I asked your Aunt Lana to marry me, and she said yes. So we were wondering if maybe you’d like to be our ring bearer at the wedding.”

Evan’s smiled.

“Cool! Do I get to walk down the aisle too?”

Lana nodded.

“You sure do.”

“Then I’m in!”

“Good.”

Lex ruffled his head before Chloe stood up and motioned toward the counter.

“Come on sweetie, why don’t you, me and Aunt Lana go order some food and drinks?”

“Okay.”

He hopped off the seat taking Chloe’s and Lana’s hands as the three of them laughed on their way to the counter. Clark watched them with a smile before turning back toward Lex.

“Thanks for picking that up for him Lex, it was really nice of you.”

Lex shrugged.

“When are you going to realize that you don’t have to thank me for everything concerning Evan, Clark? I’ve grown fond of him over the years. He’s everything I’d expect of a child that has you and our intrepid reporter for parents.”

Clark gave him half a smile before leaning back in his seat, a look of contemplation crossing his face as he watched them at the counter. Lex raised an eyebrow at his friend.

“What’s on your mind Clark?”

He sighed before turning toward Lex.

“As great as the last day or so has been Chloe and I are having a small problem with Evan. He doesn’t want to leave Smallville and we never thought to consider how a movie to the city would affect him.”

Lex nodded.

“So what are you going to do?”

“That’s just it, we don’t know yet. We’re hoping if we give him some time…he’ll come around.”

“Well have you figured out why he doesn’t want to leave?”

“I’d imagine it’s because he’d comfortable here. He knows everyone and he has friends at school. No one wants to start over and be the new kid.”

Lex glanced at Evan before looking back at Clark.

“That makes sense I suppose. Well have you tried compromising with him?”

Confusion settled on Clark’s face.

“What do you mean?”

Lex shifted in his seat and leaned closer to Clark as he spoke.

“Well when I was younger and my mother wanted me to do something I didn’t want to do, she’d strike up a bargain with me, a compromise if you will. Something my father never bothered to do. Why don’t you see if Mr. White would be willing to let you and Chloe work from Smallville until Evan finishes the school year out. Perhaps he’ll be more amenable to the move then.”

Clark gave Lex a curious look before grinning.

“You know, that idea actually isn’t half bad.”

Lex smirked and Clark turned back toward Evan and the girls with a sigh. Life was changing, but hopefully Clark would be able to use Lex’s advice to come up with a solution that worked for everyone. Tomorrow he’d call the Planet and talk to Perry, until then he’d enjoy the day with his family.
